Notes: Abstract Water from the Kombat mine was delivered to the Omatako dam via the 263-km-long Grootfontein-Omatako canal during test runs in 1997. It is intended to supply water from Kombat and other underground mines in the Otavi Mountain Land to the capital Windhoek. The Cu-Pb-Zn orebodies are hosted by carbonate rocks and the mine waters are supersaturated with respect to calcite and CO2. Along the length of the canal, the CO2 partial pressure drops from 10−2.1 atm at the inlet of the Kombat mine to 10−3.5 atm at the end of the canal. This is accompanied by a drop in Ca concentration from about 60 to about 20 mg/l. The heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn) drop along the course of the canal to values far below the national drinking-water standard. Scavenging by calcium carbonate precipitation is the major depletion mechanism.

Notes: Abstract The Conolly diagram is a section or plan on which the distances from the vein to an arbitrary reference plane are contoured. This graphical technique makes it possible to depict the shape of the vein in a form which resembles topographic contour maps. The Conolly diagram can be used to analyse the relation between oreshoot development in fault-related veins, the attitude of the irregular fault plane and slip direction of the fault. A new graphical discrimination method has been developed by which an apparent-slip direction “b” is determined in the Conolly diagram by comparing the variations in attitude of the vein with the variations in thickness of the corresponding fissure opening. Theoretically, ore shoots in dextral faults are located where the acute angle “α” between the apparent-slip direction “b” and the fault surface is smaller than zero and in sinistral faults where “α” is greater than zero. This method of interpretation is especially useful when analysing obliqueslip fault systems, which are difficult to study because of the complexities of the three-dimensional problem.

Notes: Abstract We performed bilateral femoral artery dissections in a single 50 kg mongrel dog. Digital fluoroscopic arteriograms documented the luminal diameter of the left iliac and right superficial femoral arteries. Balloon thrombectomy catheter passage was performed through hemostatic sheaths by 12 surgeons. Embolectomy balloons were filled with radiographic contrast material and the balloon catheter diameter was compared with the underlying vessel diameter. The percentage of overdistention of the embolectomy balloon relative to the arterial wall was 23%±5% in the iliac artery and 40%±13% in the femoral artery. Over a 25-month period, we used fluoroscopically assisted thromboembolectomy to treat 21 patients with acute arterial or graft occlusions. As the balloon was gently withdrawn to extract intravascular thrombus, deformities of the compliant balloon profile caused by underlying arterial lesions were identified fluoroscopically and their locations recorded to facilitate further treatment. After initial clot removal in these 21 patients, 15 residual lesions were documented. Repeat thrombectomy (n=8), balloon angioplasty (n=3), and placement of intravascular stents (n=4) eliminated all 15 lesions. Luminal continuity was successfully restored in all 21 of these patients, 10 of whom required distal open vascular reconstruction to correct existing outflow artery disease. Fluoroscopically assisted thromboembolectomy is a simple and safe method for treating acute arterial or graft occlusions in patients with diffuse arteriosclerosis. It minimizes arterial damage and blood loss during balloon thrombectomy and reduces the need for intravascular contrast agents. It also has the potential to facilitate accurate identification, localization, and treatment of significant underlying arterial lesions.

Notes: Abstract Endovascular grafting is a technique that combines the use of intravascular stents and prosthetic grafts to fabricate devices with unique properties. The purpose of this study is to describe the use of endovascular graft technology in the treatment of failed or failing standard aortoiliofemoral reconstructions. Over a 15-month period five patients with limb-threatening ischemia and failed aortofemoral or iliofemoral reconstructions underwent successful placement of six endovascular grafts to revascularize seven severely ischemic lower extremities. Standard thin-walled 6 mm polytetrafluoroethylene grafts and Palmaz balloon-expandable stents were used to fashion each reconstruction. In addition to the primary endovascular grafts, three patients underwent immediate femoropopliteal bypasses to improve distal outflow and one patient had a femorofemoral bypass graft to restore circulation to the contralateral ischemic extremity. The ankle/brachial indices of all patients significantly improved after the procedure (from a mean of 0.32 to a mean of 0.75) and all grafts are patent to date (mean follow-up 10 months). There were no deaths or limb loss in this group of patients. These favorable results indicate that this minimally invasive approach, which permits a new arterial graft to be inserted through a remote access site, is a valuable method for providing unobstructed arterial inflow after aortoiliofemoral graft failure. This procedure may be particularly valuable when there are contraindications to the use of axillary arteries or the thoracic aorta as alternatives to complex reoperative abdominal aortic surgery.

Notes: Abstract Seven sustained/controlled-release dosage forms were designed for gastrointestinal delivery of lovastatin or simvastatin, two potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. The in vivo performance of these formulations was evaluated in dogs and healthy volunteers in terms of the cholesterol lowering efficacy and/or systemic concentrations of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Results from the present and previous studies suggest that, through the controlled release of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, sustained lower plasma concentrations of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors may result in an equal or better therapeutic efficacy.

Notes: Abstract From 1988 to 1990 several collaborative “cross-country” intermediate French classes at Harvard and Stanford became one class. Students combined their efforts and insights in the accomplishment of a semester-long task, in most cases the publication of a student newspaper or magazine, using the electronic mail (e-mail) network to contact each other, elaborate their plans, and bring their projects to successful conclusion. Additional experiments of a similar nature took place between Harvard and the University of Pittsburgh (in the spring of 1990) and between Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh during 1991–1993. This paper suggests that this type of task-oriented learning through distance-communication is applicable at many different course levels and has considerable merit as an approach to teaching and learning. The key phases of this task-based model are presented along with technological information regarding computers and networks, as a guide to colleagues interested in pursuing similar lines of experimental teaching. Also included are samples of student messages, with their varied and often highly colorful discourse features, which attest to the motivation of students and reveal the strong personal investment made by the participants as they join hands across the miles in a productive, communication-based enterprise. The language and learning styles generated by technology and computers fully deserve closer investigation by researchers and teaching practitioners alike. The authors summarize the experiments, discuss assessment, and present research issues, concluding that good pedagogy and quality technology must share a vision of what can be accomplished in this rapidly evolving educational work place.

Notes: Abstract Earlier studies of the hydrolysis and aminolysis of penicillin, in the presence of zinc ion and tromethamine (Tris), revealed a very rapid catalysis mediated by a ternary complex in which the metal ion brought the reactants into close proximity in a suitable configuration for reaction. In the present work similar studies with a group of cephalosporins show not only much slower rates of reaction but a different mechanism in which the zinc ion–tromethamine complex functions as a nucleophile in a bimolecular reaction. Evidence for the differences in mechanism includes not only the different dependence of rate upon tromethamine concentration, but comparable rates of reaction of methyl esters of a penicillin and a cephalosporin and the reaction products observed by high-performance liquid chromatography.
