Notes: Our previous data based on an imaging study suggested that, in cat area 17, the representations of cardinal orientations overlap less than the representation of their nearby angles. The purpose of this study was to further investigate the underlying single-cell properties. Optical imaging was performed first to map the cortical regions corresponding to the four principal contours, the two cardinals and the two obliques. The cortical region activated by a principal orientation but not by the +10° or −10° neighbouring angles, namely the area with optically relative independent orientation selectivity (RIOS), was mapped together with the regions that overlapped with the +10° and/or −10° neighbouring angles (non-RIOS). Electrode penetrations were targeted to the RIOS and non-RIOS regions in each of the four orientations. A comparison between the RIOS and the non-RIOS regions documented a significantly higher percentage of cells with the orientation preference of the cardinal orientations in the cardinal RIOS region than that seen in the other regions. Additionally, the difference in the tuning width of cells between the RIOS and non-RIOS in the cardinal region was significantly larger than the difference between the RIOS and non-RIOS in the oblique region. The cells in the cardinal RIOS region were tuned more sharply and the cells in cardinal non-RIOS region more broadly than the oblique RIOS and/or the non-RIOS region, which showed no significant difference. These data strongly suggest the existence of functional segregation in the region corresponding to the cardinal contours.

Notes: A 13-year-old female presented complaining of swelling of the skin and purplish red papules and nodules on her left leg. These lesions had been present from early childhood and had slowly enlarged, increased in number, and become more verrucous. At the age of 8 years, one of the nodules had been excised by laser, but recurrence was noted within a few months. There was occasional pain and bleeding from the lesion. Physical examination revealed a group of several well-circumscribed, hyperkeratotic, blue-red, vascular plaques arranged linearly along the inside aspect of her left lower extremity, ranging in size from 0.5 to 4.0 cm in diameter (〈link href="#f1"〉Fig. 1). Smaller, discrete satellite nodules with a similar appearance were noted in the vicinity.〈figure xml:id="f1"〉1〈mediaResource alt="image" href="urn:x-wiley:00119059:IJD2261:IJD_2261_f1"/〉Blue-red, hyperkeratotic vascular plaques arranged linearly along the left lower extremityHistopathologic examination showed hyperproliferation and hyperkeratosis of the epidermis. The superficial dermis showed multiple, thin-walled, dilated blood-filled spaces (〈link href="#f2"〉Fig. 2). Similar spaces were present in the lower dermis and subcutaneous tissue. A diagnosis of verrucous hemangioma was made.〈figure xml:id="f2"〉2〈mediaResource alt="image" href="urn:x-wiley:00119059:IJD2261:IJD_2261_f2"/〉Dermatohistopathology revealing hyperproliferation and hyperkeratosis of the epidermis, and multiple dilated blood-filled spaces in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue (hematoxylin and eosin, ×20)

Description: Background. To demonstrate the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug- (NSAID-) induced diaphragm disease (DD). Methods. A literature search between January 1973 and August 2015 was undertaken. The clinical data of patients with NSAID-induced DD were recorded and analyzed. Results. 159 patients were included. The ratio of male to female was 1 : 2.3; the mean age was years. The most common clinical manifestations were gastrointestinal bleeding and obstruction. 121 (84%) patients took traditional NSAIDs. The durations of NSAIDs use ranged from 2 to 300 months. A majority (59.7%) of DD were seen in the small bowel, were seen secondly in the colon (30.2%), and were mainly located in the ileum (57.9%) and right colon (91.7%), respectively. 80% of patients had multiple diaphragms. 41.5% of small bowel DD were diagnosed preoperatively by capsule endoscopy and/or double-balloon enteroscopy, 52.1% at laparotomy. Nearly 75% of patients underwent surgery, endoscopic balloon dilation was performed in 22 patients, and NSAIDs were withdrawn in 53 patients. Conclusions. NSAID-induced DD is relatively rare. The small bowel is most commonly involved. Preoperative diagnosis of small bowel DD is relatively difficult. Discontinuation of the NSAIDs is recommended, surgical resection is the main treatment presently, and endoscopic balloon dilation should be considered as an alternative therapy.

Description: A novel enhancement method of global brightness modulation and local contrast enhancement combined with the improved fuzzy set theory is proposed for color image contrast enhancement. The proposed method consists of three stages. Firstly, putting forward nonlinear global brightness mapping model adjusts dynamic range of images for luminance component of color space. Secondly, membership function is established in stages to adjust local contrast of image details nonlinearly based on fuzzy set theory. Finally, the enhanced images are transformed from color space into color space. The experiments further show that the proposed method has the shortest processing time, the highest AIC values, and the least NIQE values among the other four conventional methods. It has excellent effect, which can enhance the global brightness and local contrast, and advance visibility of low illumination images.
