Notes: Abstract A prerequisite step for studying the magnitude and meaning of IQ change is to distinguish between true IQ change that is a researchable phenomenon and IQ “change” that can be accounted for by measurement error. We studied she reliability, magnitude and meaning of IQ change using scores on she WISC-R obtained from a representative sample of 794 children at ages 7, 9,11 and 13. The findings suggest that, in the majority of children, IQ change is either negligible in amount, unreliably measured or both. In a nontrivial minority of children, naturalistic IQ change is marked and real, but this change is variable in its timing, idiosyncratic in its source and transient in its course. We discuss the implications of these findings for interventions that aspire to improve IQ scores.

Notes: Abstract: The synthesis of cis-2-(aminomethyl) cyclopropanecarboxylic acid, a new analogue of GABA in a folded conformation, is described, as is also an improved preparation of trans-2-(aminomethyl) cyclopropanecarboxylic acid. When adminstered microelectrophoretically the trans isomer was more potent than GABA as a bicuculline-sensitive depressant of the firing of cat spinal neurons in vivo, whereas the cis-isomer was less potent than GABA and its effects appeared not to be sensitive to bicuculline methochloride. Trans-2-(aminomethyl) cyclopropanecarboxylic acid was a weak inhibitor of the sodium-dependent uptake of GABA by mini slices of rat cerebral cortex and a substrate for the GABA: 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase activity in extracts of rat brain mitochondria. The cis isomer did not influence GABA uptake or aminotransferase activity and neither isomer reduced glutamate decar-boxylase activity in rat brain homogenates. Both cyclopropane isomers inhibited the sodium-independent binding of GABA to synaptic membranes from rat brain and their relative potencies together with those found for the stereochemically related unsaturated derivatives, cis-and trans-4-aminocrotonic acid, were broadly consistent with the activity observed for these compounds in vivo on cat spinal neurons. These studies reinforce the evidence that extended rather than folded conformations of GABA are active at most GABA recognition sites within the mammalian central nervous system.

Notes: Severe, chronic, and nonfatal stenoses in coronary arteries have been difficult to induce consistently in large animals. Availability of such a model would have practical applications, including understanding the pathophysiology of coronary stenoses and testing new interventional devices. Current methods of producing stenosis typically require an open chest preparation, are time-consuming, and expensive. The purpose of this study was to report two reliable methods for creating severely stenotic lesions percutaneously in a porcine model without the need for an atherogenic diet. Two methods for producing severe coronary stenoses in pigs were found: (1) thermal balloon angioplasty at high temperature (80°C), and (2) implantation of elemental copper stents. Both were performed using a carotid artery cutdown. Pigs were euthanized, the hearts perfusion fixed, and arteries examined histologically. Thermal balloon angioplasty injury produced lesions with mean histopathological stenosis of 67%± 27% and mean angiographic stenosis of 70%± 21%. Histopathological examination showed medial necrosis, adventitial fibrosis, and occasional calcification of the external elastic lamina. Copper stent deployment created a mean histopathological stenosis of 81%± 22% and mean angiographic stenosis of 84%± 17%. Histopathological evaluation revealed inflammatory lesions with destruction of the elastic laminas and gross enlargement of vessel diameter. Two practical methods that reliably create severe coronary artery stenoses use intracoronary heat or copper stent implant. These lesions can be used for testing coronary interventional and diagnostic devices. These models generate lesions that form rapidly, use standard percutaneous techniques, and do not require intrathoracic surgery or atherogenic diets.
