    Notes: Abstract: All aerobic organisms use the exergonic reduction of molecular oxygen to water as primary source of metabolic energy. This reaction is catalyzed by membrane residing terminal heme/Cu-oxidases which belong to a superfamily of widely varying structural complexity between mitochondrial and bacterial members of this family. Over the last few years, considerable information from this and other laboratories accumulated also on archaeal resopiratory chains and their terminal oxidases. In the following, the molecular and catalytic properties of the latter are discussed and compared to those from bacteria and eucarya under the aspect of their energy conserving capabilities and their phylogenetic relations. The Rieske iron-sulfur proteins being important functional constituents of energy transducing respiratory complexes are included in this study. A number of essential conclusions can be drawn. (1) Like bacteria, archaeacan also contain split respiratory chains with parallel expression of separate terminal oxidases. (2) The functional core of all oxidases is the highly conserved topological motif of subunit I consisting of at least 12 membrane spanning helices with the 6 histidine residues of the heme/Cu-binding centers in identical locations. (3) Some archaeal oxidases are organized in unusual supercomplexes with other cytochromes and Rieske [2Fe2S] proteins. These complexes are likely to function as proton pumps, whereas on a structural basis several subunit I equivalents alone are postulated to be unable to pump protons. (4) The genes of two archaeal Rieske proteins have been cloned from Sulfolobus; phylogenetically they are forming a separate archaeal branch and suggest the existence of an evolutionary ancestor preceding the split into the three urkingdoms. (5) Archaeal oxidase complexes may combine features of electron transport systems occurring exclusively as separate respiratory complexes in bacteria and eucarya. (6) As far back as the deepest branches of the phylogentic tree, terminal oxidases reveal a degree of complexity comparable to that found in higher organisms. (7) Sequence analysis suggests a monophyletic origin of terminal oxidases with an early split into two types found in archaea as well as bacteria. This view implies an origin of terminal oxidases prior to oxygenic photosynthesis in contrast to the widely accepted inverse hypothesis.

    Notes: Model-aided measurement in chemical reactors. Some reaction-specific variables of chemical reactors can be determined only with difficulty, sometime only with analytical measurements which are corrupted by time lags. In contrast, the approach tries to determine these variables indirectly and without time delay from easily measured variables like temperatures, pressures, flows. These sensor signals are processed together with reactor models to provide the characteristic reaction variables. This contribution discusses the applications of model-based measuring techniques to chemical reactors. The systems are applied to operator assistence, process diagnosis, and reactor control. Their operation is submitted to a critical appraisal.

    Description: Reaction of manganese(II) and nickel(II) thiocyanate with 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)-ethane (bpa) leads to the formation of literature known compounds of composition M(NCS) 2 (bpa) 2 with M = Mn ( 1 - Mn ) and Ni ( 1 - Ni ). On heating 1 - Mn and 1 - Ni transform into new compounds of composition M(NCS) 2 (bpa) with M = Mn ( 2 - Mn ) and Ni ( 2 - Ni ). These compounds can also be prepared in solution. In both synthetic routes only microcrystalline powders are obtained with crystals too small for single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Therefore, the structures of both compounds were solved and refined from X-ray powder data. In the crystal structure the transition metal cations are coordinated by two bpa co-ligands and four thiocyanato anions within slightly distorted octahedra. The metal cations are linked by μ-1, 3-bridging thiocyanato anions into chains, that are further connected into layers by the bpa ligands. Magnetic measurements on 2 - Ni shows only Curie-Weiss paramagnetism. In contrast, for 2 - Mn an antiferromagnetic ordering is observed but on further cooling the susceptibility curves increase indicating for canted antiferromagnetism. Further measurements prove that the increase at lower temperatures can be traced back to a small contamination with 1 - Mn , which is always present independent if this compound is prepared by thermal decomposition or by crystallization from solution. In the course of the crystallization experiments a few single crystals of two additional compounds of composition Mn(NCS) 2 (bpa)(H 2 O) 2 ( 3 - Mn ) and [Mn(NCS) 2 ] 2 (bpa) 3 (CH 3 OH) 2 ( 4 - Mn ) were accidently obtained and characterized by single crystal structure analysis. The results of the magnetic measurements are compared with those for related compounds with different neutral N-donor ligands.

    Description: Aims The Parachute ® Ventricular Partitioning Device offers an additional strategy for heart failure patients with exclusion of the infarcted wall to decrease left ventricular volumes, myocardial work, and wall stress. The aim of the present study was to evaluate if Parachute implantation might influence acute haemodynamic and functional performance in patients with left ventricular aneurysm after anteroapical infarction. Methods and results Sixteen patients underwent a Parachute device implantation. Invasive right and left heart haemodynamic assessments as well as left ventricular analysis for evaluating left ventricle end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, and regional ventricular function were analysed. After implantation a significant increase in stroke volume (+25.4%, P  = 0.0005), stroke volume index (+26.5%, P  = 0.0005), cardiac output (+25.8%, P  〈 0.0001) and cardiac index (+25.9%, P  〈 0.0001) was found. In addition to an increase in mean aortic ( P  = 0.0050) and pulmonary pressure ( P  = 0.0347), there were significant increases in stroke work index ( P  = 0.0003), left ( P  = 0.0015) and right ( P  = 0.0024) ventricular stroke work index as well as left and right cardiac work index (both P  = 0.0001), while the remaining haemodynamic parameters remained unchanged. Left ventricular analysis showed an acute reduction of the left ventricular end-diastolic volume (–18.0%, P  〈 0.0001) and left ventricular end-systolic volume (–26.3%, P  〈 0.0001) and an increase in ejection fraction from 22.9 to 30.6% (+38.4%, P  〈 0.0001). Most interestingly, the basal wall segments displayed an increased contribution to the left ventricular ejection fraction with increased wall motion in nearly all segments (except the apex region). Conclusion The data demonstrate the acute haemodynamic efficacy of Parachute device implantation. The implantation of the device displays immediate significant left ventricular volume reduction leading to an acute improved right and left cardiac function, proving the concept of left ventricular partitioning.

    Description: Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs) are one of the three new greening measures of the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). We used an interdisciplinary and European-scale approach to evaluate ecological effectiveness and farmers’ perception of the different EFA options. We assessed potential benefits of EFA options for biodiversity using a survey among 88 ecologists from 17 European countries. We further analyzed data on EFA uptake at the EU level and in eight EU Member States, and reviewed socio-economic factors influencing farmers’ decisions. We then identified possible ways to improve EFAs. Ecologists scored field margins, buffer strips, fallow land, and landscape features as most beneficial whereas farmers mostly implemented ‘catch crops and green cover’, nitrogen-fixing crops, and fallow land. Based on the expert inputs and a review of the factors influencing farmers’ decisions, we suggest that EFA implementation could be improved by a) prioritizing EFA options that promote biodiversity (e.g. reducing the weight or even excluding ineffective options); b) reducing administrative constraints; c) setting stricter management requirements (e.g. limiting agrochemical use); and d) offering further incentives for expanding options like landscape features and buffer strips. We finally propose further improvements at the next CAP reform, to improve ecological effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
