    Notes: We have determined electrical conductivity (Ee) and total dissolved salts (S) in saturation extracts from 39 soil samples from the Baza basin (Province of Granada, south-east Spain). Ee ranged from 2.8 to 110dS m−3, and S from 2 to 444 8 dm−3.The relationship between S and Ee was not linear. When the saturation extracts were diluted with progressively larger quantities of distilled water and their electrical conductivity calculated (Eec) with the equation〈displayedItem type="mathematics" xml:id="mu1" numbered="no"〉〈mediaResource alt="image" href="urn:x-wiley:13510754:EJSS153:EJSS_153_mu1"/〉where Ed and Ew are the conductivity of the diluted extract and the distilled water and f is the dilution factor, the relationship between S and Eec tended to become linear.The highest linear correlation coefficient relating S (mg dm−3) and Eec (dS m−1) was reached when Eec, values were calculated for dilutions with a conductivity (Ed) between 0.1 and 0.3 dS m−1 (E*ec). The regression equation was S= 490 E*ec with r2= 0.999. This relationship can be used in all saturation extracts, regardless of the concentration and type of ions present.

    Notes: Hodin's disease, lymphocyte predominance type (nodular paragranuloma), is of germinal centre origin and the tumours cells have a B-cell phenotype. As the t(14;18) translocation, and the subsequent expression of bcl-2 protein by germinal centre cells, is the most characteristic finding of centroblastic-centrocytic lymphoma, we have tested a series of 11 cases of lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease, using Southern blot analysis for the major breakpoint region and the minor breakpoint cluster region, polymerase chain reaction with primers for the major and minor breakpoint cluster region, and immunohistological studies with a monoclonal antibody specific for the bcl-2 protein. All three techniques gave negative results in the cases of Hodgkin's disease, establishing a clear differentiation from centroblastic-centrocytic lymphoma. These findings are useful in the differential diagnosis between the two entities and raise the question of the non-clonal nature of lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease.

    Notes: Abstract: Specific binding sites for cholecystokinin (CCK) have been characterized in a particulate membrane fraction of rat cerebral cortex using a biologically active 125I-labeled derivative of the C-terminal octapeptide of CCK (CCK-8) prepared by reaction with the iodinated form of the imidoester (125IIE), methyl-p-hydroxybenzimidate. The time course of binding to cortical membranes was rapid, temperature dependent, and saturable. Half-maximal binding at 24°C was reached in 30 min and full binding at 120 min. At 37°C there was only a slight increase in 125IIE-CCK-8 bound after 15 min. The addition of a large excess of CCK-8 after 30 min of binding at 24°C caused a prompt and rapid decline in radioligand bound showing that the interaction was reversible. There was a progressive decline in the amount of 125IIE-CCK-8 bound to membranes with increasing concentrations of CCK-8 and other structurally related peptides. CCK-8 displaced 50% of the radioligand at 4 nM, CCK-33 at 10 nM, and gastrin (desulfated CCK-8) at 60 nM. Secretin, a structurally unrelated peptide, was unable to displace the radioligand from cortical membranes at 1.0 μM. Finally, 125IIE-CCK-8 exposed to cortical membranes or to buffers that had previously contained such membranes for 60 min at 24°C bound equally as well to fresh cortical membranes as control radioligand that had not been exposed to the same conditions. Thus the 125I-CCK-8 radioligand used in this study was highly resistant to degradative processes in rat brain tissue.

    Notes: Brown trout Salmo trutta is one of the most valuable species inhabiting river drainages in Galicia (northwestern Spain). The influence of man, through overfishing and pollution, is thought to have caused the decline of trout in Galician rivers. To balance the possible population decline, Galician rivers have been stocked extensively with a brown trout stock of German origin during the last 30 years. In this study, the incidence of stocking practices has been investigated by an LDH-5* genetic marker. A very low number of stocked individuals have been observed within river populations, despite the long period of repopulation. Only eight out of the 44 populations analysed showed a limited number of individuals of hatchery origin. Most stocked individuals detected were 0+ age, and showed a poor condition factor (K 〈 1). Environmental factors (muscular stamina and food habits) and genetic factors (different selective conditions in hatchery medium) are invoked to explain the low viability of hatchery fish Observed in this Study.

    Notes: Yeast strains which form velum on the surface of Sherry wine during the aging process have been isolated and characterized. According to their metabolic and molecular features most of the yeasts that were isolated belong to different races of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (beticus, cheresiensis, montuliensis and rouxii). Due to the conditions under which these yeasts were isolated, all strains have in common the capacity to develop a film as an adaptive mechanism which allows them to grow and survive in 15·5% vol. ethanol. All strains were prototrophs for amino acids and most vitamins but they gave different responses to the killer factor. However, whereas their physiological features were similar, they showed a great heterogeneity with regards to the nuclear and mitochondrial genome (mtDNA): DNA content per cell was quite variable (1·3 to 2n), electrophoretic karyotypes of nuclear genomes indicated a main pattern with some variations, and polymorphism shown by the mtDNA was very high. Under extreme conditions such as Sherry wine with 15·5% vol. ethanol, no fermentable sugar and an exclusively oxidative metabolism, cells hardly grow and the maintenance of a live population depends on survival and respiration, which in turn depend on the mtDNA. At the same time these environmental conditions are mutagenic for the mtDNA, causing an increase in variation. Thus, the polymorphism observed might reflect the enormous variability induced by the ethanol followed by the selection of those mtDNA sequences which make the mitochondria metabolically active under these conditions.

    Description: The effect of slow ON-OFF liquid flow modulation on the yield of consecutive reactions is investigated for oxidation of aqueous ethanol solutions using a 0.5 % Pd/Al 2 O 3 commercial catalyst in a laboratory trickle-bed reactor. Experiments with modulated liquid flow rate (MLFR) were performed under the same hydrodynamic conditions (degree of wetting, liquid holdup) as experiments with constant liquid flow rate (CLFR). Thus, the impact of the duration of wet and dry cycles as well as the period can be independently investigated. Depending on cycling conditions, acetaldehyde or acetic acid production is favored with MLFR compared to CLFR. Results suggest both the opportunity and challenge of finding a way to tune the cycling parameters for producing the most appropriate product. ON-OFF liquid flow modulation in a trickle-bed reactor and its impact on the yield of ethanol oxidation in presence of a Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst is studied. High cycling frequencies benefit the yield toward the intermediate product, while intermediate frequencies significantly increase the final product yield. As demonstrated, product distribution can be considerably modified through frequency tuning.

    Description: Accurately measuring sediment flux in large rivers remains a challenge due to the spatial and temporal cross-sectional variability of suspended sediment concentrations in conjunction with sampling procedures that fail to accurately quantify these differences. This study presents a field campaign methodology that can be used to improve the measurement of suspended sediment concentrations in the Amazon River or similarly large rivers. The turbidity signal and Rouse model are together used in this study to define the spatial distribution of suspended sediment concentrations in a river cross-section, taking into account the different size fractions of the sediment. With this methodology, suspended sediment fluxes corresponding to each sediment class are defined with less uncertainty than with manual samples. This paper presents an application of this methodology during a field campaign at different gauging stations along a 3,000-km stretch of the Solimões/Amazon River during low-water and flood periods. Vertical concentration profiles and Rouse model applications for distinctive sediment sizes are explored to determine concentration gradients throughout a cross-section of the river. The results show that coupling both turbidity technology and the Rouse model may improve our understanding of the spatial distribution of different sediments fractions sizes in the Solimões/Amazon River. These data are very useful in defining a pertinent monitoring strategy for suspended sediment concentrations in the challenging context of large rivers.
