Notes: Although late recurrence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is a known clinical phenomenon, only 12 adequately documented cases exist in the literature. We describe two female patients with CMM who developed melanoma metastases 18 years after radical excision of their primary tumours and presumed cure. Increasing numbers of reports of cases of delayed metastases of CMM might have implications for management and follow up of melanoma patients.

Notes: Abstract  Today DNA-based techniques are very common for the detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food products. For fast and easy detection of GMOs, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening methods, which amplify common transgenic elements, are applied in routine analysis. These techniques do not allow differentiation between GMOs and the natural occurrence of transgenic elements, such as the 35S-promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) or the NOS-terminator of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and thus may result in false-positive detection of GMOs. In this study we evaluated three different existing 35S screening systems and report the development of two new CaMV-specific PCR systems. These PCR systems based on CaMV-specific genes allow the identification of positively screened 35S food samples as naturally virus-infected products or plants. Seven food samples tested positive in routine 35S screening analysis and negative in GMO specific systems were investigated using the new virus-specific PCR systems. In all seven samples CaMV was detected.

Notes: Abstract In the earliest stage of cosmological evolution due to high matter densities space and time most likely admitted a very complex geometrical and topological structure. After themalization, statistical averaging and cooling, flat Minkowski space developed but statistical fluctuations from this “averaged out space-time” may still exist in the low energy world. In the following, we explore the consequences of these fluctuations in the low energy world based on a “microscopic uncertainty principle for time”. Phenomena such as spin polarization precession, spectral shifts, spin flips, C.P. violating phenomena and neutron interferometry may all be influenced by these fluctuations and we discuss just how the conventional theory of these temporal phenomena could be affected by fluctuations away from Minkowski space-time. We also discuss the experimental limits on the discrete time interval setting the scale of these fluctuations along with possible temporal changes of the discrete time interval over cosmological time scales in the spirit of Dirac's “Large number hypothesis”.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In order to examine the efficacy of whole body acupuncture additionally applied to drug treatment in depression, a single-blind placebo-controlled study with 70 inpatients administered to three different treatment groups has been carried out. All patients were pharmacologically treated with the tetracyclic antidepressant mianserin. The verum group (n=22) received acupuncture at specific points considered to be effective in the treatment of depression. The placebo group (n=24) was treated with acupuncture at non-specific locations and the control group (n=24) received only pharmacological treatment. Acupuncture was applied three times a week over a period of four weeks. Psychopathology was rated by judges blind to verum/placebo conditions twice a week over eight weeks with the CGI, GAS, BRMS and BfS rating scales. Additionally applied acupuncture improved the course of depression more than pharmacological treatment with mianserin did by itself. However, we could not detect any differences between placebo and verum acupuncture.
