Notes: A Barlow-type electromechanical strain gauge and an indium/gallium-in-rubber strain gauge were compared for linearity of output, replicability, stability, and sensitivity to temperature changes. Distension of the strain gauges was achieved by placing them on standard size glass dilators, while temperature changes were produced and monitored in a controlled environment. Both gauges demonstrated comparable and very linear outputs and both had high test-retest reliability. Variations in temperature affected the outputs for both gauges, although for neither did they affect the degree of linearity between pen deflection and circumference. The electromechanical strain gauge was marginally less sensitive to temperature changes than the indium/gallium gauge, although for neither was the degree of error introduced of great practical significance. Although the output from the electromechanical strain gauge was slightly less stable over time than that from the indium/gallium gauge, when all variables were considered, the former gauge was marginally preferred over the latter.

Notes: A persistent problem in evaluation research relates to the difficulty of using true experimental designs. In particular, random assignment of subjects to treatment groups is both very important to insure the internal validity of the design and very difficult to implement due to logistical and ethical aspects of field research. This paper reports on a strategy for randomization which was adapted to judicial research: specifically to the evaluation of o program for adjudicating minor traffic offenders. It is demonstrated that through careful planning and coordination, designs involving random assignment can be instituted without involving significant difficulties.

Notes: The title compounds, 2-(dimethylamino)biphenyl-2′-carboxaldehyde, C15H15NO, and 2-(dimethylamino)biphenyl-2′,6′-dicarboxaldehyde, C16H15NO2, show similar 1,6-interactions [N...C=O 2.929 (3) to 3.029 (3) Å] between the dimethylamino and aldehyde groups located in the ortho positions of the two rings, which lie at 58.1 (1)–62.4 (1)° to each other.

Notes: Abstract The regulation of the spvR promoter from the Salmonella dublin virulence plasmid was monitored using proter-reporter gene fusion constructs. Activity was dependent upon the presence of the spv region and was affected by the number of copies of the spv region present with the cell. Activity remained constant throughout exponential growth, and increased rapidly with the onset of stationary phase, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Additionally, the level of spvR expression was controlled by the availability of iron, activity being greatest under low iron conditions in stationary phase. The spvA gene product negatively regulated spvR expression in a dose-dependent manner, indicating that SpvA provides a negative feedback mechanism for this operon.
