Description: Crusts composed of nontronite and ferromanganese oxides were recovered from Explorer Ridge, a spreading ridge segment in the northeastern Pacific Ocean located off the west coast of Canada. The chemical and mineralogical composition of the crusts closely resembles that of the mound-like hydrothermal deposits recently discovered at the FAMOUS site on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and on the Galapagos spreading centre. Compositional anomalies suggest that the crusts are precipitates of hydrothermal vent solutions which were ejected discontinuously and subsequently mixed with seawater.

Description: Concretions of iron and manganese oxides and hydrous oxidesóobjects commonly called manganese nodulesóare widely distributed not only on the deep-sea floor but also in shallow marine environments1. Such concretions were not known to occur north of Cape Mendocino in the shallow water zones bordering the North-East Pacific Ocean until the summer of 1966 when they were recovered by one of us (J. W. M.) in dredge samples from Jervis Inlet, a fjord approximately 50 miles north-west of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Notes: Coronary artery dimensions were evaluated in 42 patients (52 lesions) undergoing directional atherectomy of primary atheromatous lesions in native coronary arteries between October 1989 and April 1991, Dimensions were compared with a cohort of 162 patients (213 lesions) undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty of similar lesions between March 1984 and April 1988. Computer-assisted quantitative angiography was performed for paired near-orthogonal views (captured during diastole) of each treated lesion; image pairs taken prior to, immediately following, and 6 months after coronary intervention were studied. Although coronary dimensions were equivalent for the two treatment groups before therapy, the immediate posttreatment minimal lumen diameter was significantly larger after atherectomy than angioplasty (2.24 ± 0.53 mm vs 1.52 ± 0.34 mm, P 〈 0.01). Despite this, coronary dimensions were similar in the two groups at follow-up angiography. Several dichotomous definitions of restenosis were tested using these quantitative data. Restenosis rates were similar for the two treatments using most definitions, but those definitions based on loss of relative or absolute lumen dimensions resulted in higher rates of restenosis following atherectomy. These data demonstrate that: (1) directional coronary atherectomy can achieve greater initial gain in luminal dimensions than angioplasty; (2) the loss in vessel dimensions within 6 months (late loss) is greater after atherectomy than after angioplasty; and (3) restenosis definitions rely on relative or absolute loss of initial luminal gain favor of angioplasty. Notes: Abstract: Carnosine has now been demonstrated by chemical analysis to be present in rat olfactory mucosa on day 16 of gestation. The tissue content of this dipeptide then increases progressively during fetal and postnatal life. Radioactive carnosine can be isolated from cultured embryonic rat olfactory mucosa incubated with [14C]β-alanine as early as 13–14 days of gestation. The amount of incorporation also increases progressively with the initial age of the explant and with time in culture indicating in vitro maturation of the carnosine synthesis capability of olfactory tissue. To test whether the level of β-alanine was limiting the synthesis of carnosine, we evaluated the effect of elevated β-alanine levels on tissue carnosine content. Exogenous β-alanine caused an increase in the tissue content of carnosine at several ages in vivo and in vitro. In adult animals this increase was observed in olfactory bulb, olfactory muscosa, and skeletal muscle. However, there was no associated alteration in carnosine synthetase activity. In addition, the different half-lives of carnosine in olfactory tissue and muscle seemed unaltered, arguing against any effect on degradative enzymes. Thus, tissue carnosine levels are regulated, at least in part, by substrate availability. The early appearance of carnosine synthetic capacity during prenatal development indicates that this enzyme activity should be a valuable aid in studying early events in olfactory neuron maturation.

Notes: Substantivity of various 125I-labelled collagen hydrolysates to virgin or bleached and dyed European hair or human callus was tested under conditions which simulated actual application of such hydrolysates in shampoos or foam baths. Factors which most strongly influence protein substantivity were identified. The molecular properties of the hydrolysate are the most important factor. The hydrolysate which adsorbed best had the lowest overall isoelectric point, the highest pH in solution and the largest content of high molecular weight peptides. The extent of adsorption was also a function of concentration of protein, of the duration of application and of the nature of the components of the formulation. Thus, the combination of shampoo and hydrolysate can be adjusted so that a desired substantivity is attained.

Notes: Biochemical effects of both low and high ozone impact in long-term and short-term experiments are well investigated and documented; however, short-term treatments with moderate ozone levels have revealed divergent information concerning the biochemistry of needle tissues. Damage to the meristems of spruce trees have been found for several ozone treatments, in the form of an enhanced number of chromosomal aberrations, which appeared to be persistent for up to 2 years after the ozone challenge. One of the main aims of the present study was to determine whether a moderate ozone concentration is able to induce damage in needle biochemistry and/or only in the genetic material of root meristems. In the experiment three different clones of Norway spruce trees (Picea abies) were challenged with moderate ozone concentrations (up to 80 nl/l) for 11 weeks in greenhouses. Simultaneous investigations of root tip meristematic cells and the biochemical status of needle tissues regarding antioxidants and pigments were performed at two different sampling times: directly after the ozone treatment and 1 year later. Ozone effects in needles were absent both at the end of the fumigation and also after 1 year, but different clonal behaviour was found. Effect of ozone on chromosomal aberration rates in root tip meristems were observed and also the types of persisting chromosomal aberrations changed within the time course and within the different clones.
