Notes: Abstract LetA be a proper normed ideal (in the sense ofCigler) insideL 1 (G), whereG is a non-discrete LCA group. This is proved: For each integern≧1 there existsf∈L 1 (G) such thatf, f 2 ,..., f n∉A whilef n+1 ∈A.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Serum analysis carried out about 7 days before menstruation in 33 patients with mastodynia and 20 controls confirmed that progesterone is frequently decreased and prolactinaemia increased in the patients with mastodynia compared with controls of the same age. In a double blind trial, administration of Lynestrenol to 47 patients with mastodynia (each of whom was given 10 mg per day from the 10th to the 24th day of the cycle) resulted in a significant improvement of this condition in 80% of the treated cases. The therapeutic failures may be explained by anomalies in the secretion of prolactin, and may possibly be linked to individual sensitivity factors.

Notes: Abstract The ability of bacterial cultures to degrade diethanolamine under anoxic conditions with nitrate as an electron acceptor was investigated. A mixed culture capable of anaerobic degradation of diethanolamine was obtained from river sediments by enrichment culture. From this a single bacterial strain was isolated which could use diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine and N-methyl diethanolamine as its sole carbon and energy sources either aerobically or anaerobically. Growth on diethanolamine was faster in the absence of oxygen. The accumulation of possible metabolites in the culture medium was determined as was the ability to grow on certain putative intermediates in the degradation of diethanolamine. A possible pathway for the degradation of ethanolamines by this organism is suggested.

Notes: Abstract Salt tolerance of mature Williams Bon Cretien pear trees was assessed in a field trial on a duplex, slowly permeable clay loam. The trees were irrigated with a range of salinities; electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw) of 0.2 to 1.4 dS/m by flood for seven years or 0.2 to 2.1 dS/m by microjet sprinklers for nine years. Water-table levels were maintained below 3 m by a groundwater pump. Yield and leaf ion content were assessed during the treatment period. Aspects of growth and physiology were monitored in the 0.2 and 2.1 dS/m microjet treatments during the seventh irrigation season. Soil profile salinities varied between 3.0 and 4.3 dS/m for the most saline flood treatment and from 1.5 to 2.6 dS/m for the most saline microjet treatment. Soil sodicity (sodium absorption ratio) increased during the experiment, reaching a maximum of 9 in the most saline treatments. The salinity treatments caused reduced yields after seven years. In the most saline treatment (ECw = 2.1 dS/m, microjet-irrigated), yield decreased to about 60 and 50% of the control in the eighth and ninth years, respectively, and 40% of trees were dead in the ninth year. Leaf ion concentrations (in January) of the most saline treatment were at “excess” levels (〉0.1% Cl and 〉0.02% Na) from 1982 to 1990. There were significant (P〈0.01) negative linear relationships between yield in 1990 and leaf Na and Cl, measured both in 1990 and in 1989. During the seventh season of saline irrigation, lateral shoot growth was reduced, leaves and fruit were smaller and leaf fall was earlier in the 2.1 dS/m treatment compared with the control. Dawn and midday water potential and osmotic potential were not significantly affected by saline irrigation. Midday CO2-assimilation rates (A) and leaf conductance to water vapour diffusion (g) were similar for 2.1 dS/m irrigated and control trees, however there was a trend towards a reduction in A and g of these salt-treated trees late in the irrigation season when leaf Na and Cl had increased to 250 and 240 mM (tissue water basis) respectively.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers an ellipse, produced by the intersection of a triaxial ellipsoid and a plane (both arbitrarily oriented), and derives explicit expressions for its axis ratio and orientation. The relationship between central and noncentral sections, and the problem of intersection probability, are discussed. The resulting equations have obvious applications in structural geology and optical mineralogy, and in stereological modeling of grain-size and grain-shape distributions.

Notes: Abstract Little consensus exists on how best to analyze natural fracture spacings and their sequences. Field measurements and analyses published in geotechnical literature imply fracture processes radically different from those assumed by theoretical structural geologists. The approach adopted in this paper recognizes that disruption of rock layers by layer-parallel extension results in two spacing distributions, one representing layer-fragment lengths and another separation distances between fragments. These two distributions and their sequences reflect mechanics and history of fracture and separation. Such distributions and sequences, represented by a 2 × nmatrix of lengths L,can be analyzed using a method that is history sensitive and which yields also a scalar estimate of bulk extension, e(L).The method is illustrated by a series of Monte Carlo experiments representing a variety of fracture-and-separation processes, each with distinct implications for extension history. Resulting distributions of e(L) are process-specific, suggesting that the inverse problem of deducing fracture-and-separation history from final structure may be tractable.

Notes: Abstract Dome-shaped concentrations of mica adjacent to garnet porphyroblasts in a hornfelsed metagreywacke are seen in thin-section as “cleavage arcs.” This paper examines some of the stereological relationships between dome shape and are shape by modelling the domes as spherical segments of one base. The relationship between the true thickness of mica flakes within the domes and their apparent thickness as measured in thin section is also derived.
