Notes: Summary One hundred twenty-seven children with osteogenesis imperfecta (O.I.) were studied during the first 10 years of life. According to Sillence, 40 patients were assigned to type I, 39 to type III, and 48 to type IV O.I. Centiles for height, weight, and the annual number of fractures could be established for the different types of O.I. The development of the skeletal changes could be documented for the different forms of the disease. At birth, the skeletal changes were significantly more severe in type III than in type IV patients. During the first 10 years of life the number of fractures, extent of skeletal deformities, and growth retardation did not differ between types III and IV. Only fracture nonunion, dentinogenesis imperfecta, and congenital cardiac malformations were more frequent in type III than in type IV. Papillary calcifications of the kidney and kidney stones were diagnosed in 4 type III and 2 type IV patients. Hemihypertrophy of the body developed, in 2 type I patients. Although types III and IV patients suffered from severe short stature, serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF) I was in the normal range.

Notes: Abstract Laser induced nonlinear absorption profiles in a three-level system have been recorded to study the effect of elastic collisions upon optical coherences. In our particular system, the signal is due to a pure double-quantum term, where we have separated the effect of phase-interrupting collisions from the effect of velocity-changing collisions. Experimental results show that the effect of velocity-changing collisions is very small, and that broadening of the signal is due to phase-interrupting collisions mainly. We are able to determine the increase of the decay rate of the coherent superposition (the “coherence”) of two levels of same parity [Dγ 13/dp=(6.5±1) MHz/Torr] and an upper limit for the mean velocity change (ũ≲5m/s).

Notes: Abstract A saturation-spectroscopy experiment is performed in a three-level system in Xe I, and shows that a narrow dip occurs in the power-broadened Lorentzian response. It is due to the Zeeman splitting of common level by the earth magnetic field. Other splittings, typically larger than 0.2 the natural width, can be observed using this saturation effect. Interpretation is made on the basis of simple realistic assumptions.

Notes: Abstract After a 2 week control period at 400 m, cattle were exposed to 5,000 m simulated altitude for 2 weeks, which was followed by a 2-week post-altitude control period. Plasma cortisol values from blood samples taken every 30 min for a total of 24 h indicated that cortisol was secreted episodically and that a circadian rhythm existed. When cortisol values were grouped into 4, 6-h periods, plasma cortisol was most abundant from 06:00 to 12:00 h with an average of 0.96µ g/100 ml and least abundant from 00:30 to 06:00 h with an average of 0.55µ g/100 ml. Plasma cortisol increased from 0.42 to 3.08µ g/100 ml during the 4 h ascent to 5,000 m and decreased to near normal levels the following day. A rhythmic plasma cortisol pattern was maintained after one day at simulated high altitude.

Notes: Abstract The production ofη-mesons in proton-nucleus reactions is analysed with respect to primary nucleon-nucleon (NN→NNη) and secondary pion-nucleon (πN→ηN) production processes on the basis of Hartree-Fock groundstate momentum distributions and free on-shell production processes. The folding model adopted compares well for meson production with more involved simulations based on VUU transport equations. Similar to K+ production in proton-nucleus reactions theη-mesons are primarily produced by theπN →ηN channel. However,η-mesons are absorbed in nuclei via excitation of the N* (1535) resonance which leads to strong distortions of the primordial spectra. On the other hand, the experimental mass dependence of the differential cross sections might yield information about the in-medium properties of this resonance.

Notes: Abstract Results of flow visualization experiments of an impulsively accelerated plane interface between air and SF6 are reported. The shock tube used for the experiments has a larger test section than in previous experiments. The larger extent of uniform test flow relative to nonuniform boundary-layer flow permits unambiguous interpretation of flow-visualization photographs, and the influence of shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions is no longer dominant. The strong wall vortex observed in previous studies is not observed in these experiments. It is found that the thin membrane, which forms the initially plane interface, has a significant influence on the initial growth rate of the interface thickness. However, the measured growth rates after the first reflected shock are independent of membrane configuration and are in good agreement with analytical predictions.

Notes: Abstract Cu 3d and O 2p electronic states of Cu2O, CuO, and the highT c compound YBa2Cu3O7−δ have been probed by means of high resolution x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). The CuLα and OKα XES bands are compared in detail with recently reported x-ray photoelectron and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS and UPS) measurements and densities of states obtained by local density functional (LDF) theory. The XES data show that the hybridization between Cu 3d and O 2p states is completely modified in CuO and YBa2Cu3O7−δ, whered-d correlation energy is large, as compared to LDF predictions. Such is not the case for Cu2O where agreement between theory and experiment is good. The Cu 3d states are found to be highly localized in YBa2Cu3O7−δ (though less so than in CuO). The O 2p states lie at lower binding energies than in the simpler oxides and are mainly situated above the Cu 3d states. The respective positions of the centre of gravity of the OK α emission bands on an x-ray energy scale indicate that the oxygen sites are less well screened by the O 2p states in the highT c compound. This provides indirect evidence for the presence ofd-like states at the oxygen sites.

Notes: Abstract: High-spin states in 202Pb and 203Pb have been investigated by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy following the reaction 198Pt(9Be,xn). A search for magnetic rotational bands in these isotopes confirmed one of the two bands previously assigned to 202Pb and revealed a new band in this isotope. No evidence for magnetic rotation has been found in 203Pb.

Notes: Abstract By means of an ESR detection method based on the optical pumping technique theg-factors and ESR-linewidths of the relaxed excited state (RES) of a number ofF- andF A -centres have been measured. From the linewidths information on the spatial distribution of the RES is obtained: The data are interpreted in terms of a very diffuse wavefunction which is essentially the same for all crystals when scaled with the lattice constant. A numerical value for the parameter describing the spatial extension is given.

Notes: Abstract With the knowng-factor of the Coulomb excited first 2+-state in32S the transient magnetic field was determined for sulphur ions traversing Gd at a mean velocity of 16ν 0 (ν 0=c/137). The degree of polarization deduced for the dominating H-like ions, ¯p1s =0.10(3), agrees very well with that obtained at lower velocities. In addition, an upper limit of a transient electric field gradient was deduced from the particle-γ-angular correlation which is expected on theoretical grounds.
