Notes: Abstract Background: Expression of individual oncogenes may predict outcome in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). We studied the oncogene profile in the tumors of patients with CRC and assessed their value as predictors of liver metastases. Methods: The oncoproteins c-myc, c-erbB-2/neu (c-neu), PCNA and p53, were measured by immunohistochemistry in sections of metastasizing human CRC (n=34) and their liver secondaries as well as in sections of nonmetastasizing CRC (n=25). Results: The metastasizing primary CRC expressed proliferating-cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), c-neu, and c-myc at significantly higher levels than the nonmetastasizing primary cancer. p53 was also overexpressed in the metastatic group compared with the nonmetastasizing CRC, but this difference was not significant. The frequency of expression of all these markers was similar in the metastasizing primary CRC and the liver secondaries from the same patients. There was no correlation between the expression of the individual markers and histological grade, DNA ploidy, and subsequent local recurrence and lung metastasis and survival. However, when both groups were assessed together, positive expression of c-myc was more likely to occur in poorly differentiated tumors, whereas PCNA expression increased with more advanced Dukes stages. Conclusion: These results suggest that the overexpression of c-myc, c-neu, PCNA, and p53 may occur in CRC that are likely to metastasise to the liver.

Notes: Abstract The parameters for symmetrical mixing of ions of the same sign in the virial-coefficient (Pitzer) system are evaluated from literature data for 25°C in a manner consistent with the higher-order limiting law of Friedman. Twenty-four systems involve cation mixing with a common anion and fourteen involve anion mixing with a common cation. Heat of mixing data were similarly treated in a recent publication; the results give the temperature coefficients of some of these same parameters. The combined results yield the mixing parameters as functions of temperature on a basis both self-consistent and in accord with the limiting law. The results also yield, for a few systems without a common ion, predicted values in good agreement with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract A comprehensive treatment of the thermodynamic properties of aqueous UO2SO4 to 559 K is presented. This system has the unusual property of liquid-liquid phase separation above its critical temperature of 559 K. The equations for criticality and for phase equilibria in the molality system are developed. The factors leading to this phase separation are discussed as well as the approximations inherent in our equation because of incomplete information.

Notes: Abstract The ion-interaction model has been applied to published measurements for the multicomponent electrolytes HCl+MCl (M means Na or K) in mixed solvents (urea + water or methanol + water). The Pitzer parameters β HCl (0) , β HCl (1) , C HCl φ , (β NaCl (0) + θNaH), β NaCl (1) , ΨNaHCl in the HCl+NaCl + urea + water system were obtained by the method of least squares. A temperature and molality dependent equation for γHCl in this system was obtained. In the HCl+MCl + methanol + water system, the mixing parameter θHCl was obtained in terms of the Harned Rule. The relationship between Pitzer parameters and the composition of the mixed solvent was discussed.

Notes: Abstract The first thermodynamic dissociation constants of glycine in 5, 15 mass % glucose+water mixed solvents at five temperatures from 5 to 45°C have been determined from precise emf measrements of a cell without liquid junction using hydrogen and Ag-AgCl electrodes and a new method of polynomial approximation proposed on the basis of Pitzer's electrolytic solution theory in our previous paper. The results obtained from both methods agree within experimental error. The standard free energy of transfer for HCl from water to aqueous mixed solvent have been calculated and the results are discussed.

Notes: Summary The Elasto-Visco-Plastic Analysis for Rock Displacement of the Foundation Pit of a Water Power Plant In this paper a method used in the elasto-visco-plastic analysis is proposed. It has been employed for deformation analysis of the foundation pit of a large water power plant in China. The back analysis of this rock engineering problem shows that the relief of the rock initial stresses due to excavation and the rheological properties of the weak intercalations and the rock masses as well are the main factors which caused the large deformation of the foundation pit. The results from the calculations are coincided fairly well with the data measured and observed in situ.

Notes: Abstract. The function and prognostic significance of the nm23 gene is controversial in colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to determine if nm23 protein expression correlated with the subsequent development of liver metastasis. Paraffin-embedded sections of 30 metastasizing CRC primaries and their subsequently resected liver secondaries were compared with those of 28 nonmetastasizing CRCs, 20 adenomas, and 20 cases of normal colonic mucosa. Expression of nm23 protein, assayed by immunohistochemistry, was measured using a standard semiquantitative scaling system and compared with a microcomputer-based color video image analysis (VIA). There was good correlation between color VIA and semiquantitative evaluation of nm23 immunoreactivity, confirming the validity of quantitative analysis (Pearson’s r = 0.88; p 〈 0.001). Metastasizing CRC primaries and secondaries overexpressed nm23 protein when compared with the other clinical groups, particularly nonmetastasizing CRC (Student’s t -test, p 〈 0.001). Furthermore, more nm23 immunoreactivity was associated with a higher risk of death from CRC (log-rank test, p = 0.002). These results suggest that overexpression of nm23 is highly associated with liver metastases from CRC and reduced survival.

Notes: Abstract This paper proposes a theoretical analysis for the dynamic response of a rigid perfectly plastic simply supported beam with an imperfection in the midspan cross-section under uniform step, pulse, and impulsive loading when support is assumed to be free to move inward. The complete solutions for an entire dynamic response process are given and the relationship between the distribution of energy dissipated at plastic hinges and the parameter of imperfection is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The DNA labelling of the bifilarly 5-bromodeoxyuridine- to-substituted chromatid decreased relative to that of the unifilarly substituted chromatid with increasing duration of HB pretreatment (Hoechst 33258 plus black light at 55° C). Sister chromatid differential staining was detected by Giemsa as well as a DNA-specific dye, ethidium bromide, after 4 s of HB pretreatment. The contrast of sister chromatid differential staining was improved with increased duration of HB pretreatment or by incubation with exonucleases. Hydrogen donors such as cysteamine, cysteine, and L-ascorbic acid inhibited the HB pretreatment, but this inhibition could be overcome by increasing the duration of HB pretreatment.

Notes: Summary Two CuII complexes, [Cu2(α-L)Cl4·H2O (1) and Cu2(β-L)Cl4 (2) [α-L and β-L = meso- and rac-PhS(O)(CH2)2S(O)Ph, respectively], were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. spectra and molar conductances. In each case, the CuII ion bonds to the 557-01 moiety through oxygen, and may be bridged by the ligand (α-L or β-L). From magnetic moment measurements at room temperature and variable temperature magnetic susceptibilities, we suggest that complexes (1) and (2) exhibit weak ferromagnetic behaviour.
