Notes: Abstract We conducted a study of the relationship between changes in photosynthetic pigment content and water depth in Great Harbor near Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA, on the green algae Ulva lactuca and Codium fragile and the red algae Porphyra umbilicalis and Chondrus crispus. A calibrated underwater photometer equipped with spectral band filters measured light attenuation by the water column. The depth required for a 10-fold diminution of photon flux was 3.6, 5.3, 6.0 and 6.0 m for red, blue, yellow and green light, respectively. Seaweeds were attached to vertically buoyed lines and left to adapt for 7 days; then, with their positions reversed, they were allowed to readapt for 7 days. All species showed greater photosynthetic pigment content with increased depth. Further, the ratio of phycobiliproteins and chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a increased with depth. Changes in pigment content were reversible and occurred in the absence of cell division. There was a net loss of pigments near the surface (high irradiance), and subsequent synthesis when seaweeds were transferred to a position deep in the water column (low irradiance). In contrast, seaweeds which were found in intertidal habitats changed only their pigment concentration, and not pigment ratio, a phenomena analogous to higher plant sun and shade adaptation. Therefore, seaweeds modify their photon-gathering photosynthetic antennae to ambient light fields in the water column by both intensity adaptation and complementary chromatic adaptation.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Neue Messungen der Löslichkeiten von K-Acetat und K-Benzoat in wäßrigen Lösungen von 1,4-Dioxan bzw.
Notes: Abstract New measurements upon the respective solubilities of potassium acetate and benzoate at 25 °C in aqueous 1,4-dioxane and in aqueous tetrahydrofuran are reported, together with a quasi-thermodynamic development, from the union of chemical thermodynamics with the unrestricted result of theDebye-Hückel theory of electrolytes in solution, of a general theoretical function which in principle provides a summary descriptive expression of the relationship between the solibilities of any salt at any natural limiting concentrations and the polarities of its solvents.

Notes: Abstract  Lysyl oxidase is the extracellular enzyme that catalyzes oxidative deamination of peptidyl-lysine residues in elastin precursors, and lysine and hydroxylysine residues in collagen precursors to form peptidyl-aldehydes. These aldehydes then spontaneously condense to crosslink collagen and elastin and thereby allow the formation of a mature and functional extracellular matrix. In the present study, cryosections made from aseptic immune-induced periapical lesions experimentally generated in laboratory rats were examined by immunohistochemistry to investigate whether lysyl oxidase protein expression is altered in inflamed oral tissues. Periapical lesions are experimentally induced endodontic lesions of tooth roots. In addition, the effect of administration of a mixture of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 into these lesions on lysyl oxidase expression was determined. Lysyl oxidase expression was found to be increased in non-mineralized connective tissue adjacent to inflamed lesions. Morphometric analyses indicated that maximum lysyl oxidase expression occurred at a discrete distance from the lesion not exceeding 350 μm from the inflammatory cells. Staining was associated with mesenchymal cells with a fibroblastic morphology. No lysyl oxidase staining was found near teeth where no lesion was induced. Application of a mixture of FGF-2 and IGF-1 resulted in a further twofold increase in lysyl oxidase expression. These results provide a new in vivo model to study lysyl oxidase regulation, and suggest that inflammatory cells may control lysyl oxidase expression in oral tissues, possibly by a mechanism involving secretion of cytokines and other factors, probably contributing to the regulation of extracellular matrix accumulation.

Notes: Abstract This report describes unusual radiologic and pathologic findings in a patient with multiple small bowel metastases from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. The diagnostic work-up revealed a large, pleural-based, right lung mass, a large left adrenal mass, two ulcerated small bowel masses, and a unique giant peduncular mass that caused intermittent intussusception. A pertinent review of the literature is presented.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of benign gastric ulcer with secondary extensive intramural hemorrhage causing a radiographic appearance consistent with a large ulcerated gastric neoplasm. This is the second such case reported and the first studied with sonography and computed tomographic scan. A brief review of the literature on intramural gastric hematoma is presented.

Notes: Abstract Previously proposed formulae for the quantitative estimation of bidirectional shunts across ventricular septal defects require determination of the oxygen contents of mixed venous, pulmonary artery, pulmonary venous, and aortic blood. Because these formulae do not take into account the mixing of oxygenated with unoxygenated blood within the ventricles, their use must result in underestimation of shunt flows in each direction. A mathematical model for a ventricular defect is examined, in which it is assumed that mixing of blood occurs in each of six sites in the venae cavae or right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, left atrium, left ventricle, and aorta. A total of fourteen streams of blood can flow from one to another of these mixing sites. As long as complete mixing occurs in the six specified mixing sites, any degree of mixing or non-mixing of the various streams is permitted. From the equations characterizing the model, formulae are derived in which the shunt flow in each direction is expressed in terms of the oxygen contents in the six mixing sites and the fractions of blood which enter the shunt from either side without prior mixing in a ventricular mixing site. The previously reported formulae, which apply when no ventricular mixing is allowed to occur, lead to theoretical minimum values for the shunt flows in each direction. At the opposite extreme where all the shunting blood is required to mix in a ventricle before entering the shunt, formulae for maximum possible shunt flows are also obtained. The absolute values for the left-to-right and right-to-left shunt flows, which must lie somewhere between the theoretical maximum and minimum values, cannot be computed from blood gas data alone.

Notes: Abstract Biological herbicides will assume greater importance for weed control as the number of chemicals registered for use decreases. Two promising fungi pathogenic on Datura stramonium and Cassia obtusifolia are, respectively, Alternaria crassa and Alternaria cassiae. In order to develop technologies for the efficient production of spore inocula in submerged liquid culture, we studied the effect of volatile factors which influenced sporulation on solid media. Sporulation was quantified on Richard's V8 agar under individual and joint variation of carbon dioxide (CO2) and relative humidity (RH). Sporulation of both fungi was suppressed when the two factors increased but not when CO2 was absorbed and RH remained high. Incubation of cultures in a CO2 controlled cabinet with RH constant indicated that CO2 was the suppressant.
