    Abstract: Pharmacology has always been of utmost significance to Persian and Hellenic ancient scientists and presented their viewpoints in medical texts. The aim is to assess the interaction between Hellenic and Persian pharmacologists and the resulting output. Methods: Using descriptive-analytical method, primary Persian sources written by scholars such as Raban Tabari, Rhazes, Avicenna, and Jorjani, and also the works by prominent Greek scholars including Theophrastus , Hippocrates , Dioscorides , and Galen were searched using selected keywords, based on inclusion and exclusion critera, without time limit in domestic and foreign databases. Finally, the PRISMA diagram was drawn. Results: Studies show that Persian and Greek doctors have tried to develop the concepts of pharmacology and its applications interactively. In this research, pharmacology in Persian and Greek medical traditions is studied, and their mutual contributions are depicted. The concepts of medicine and pharmacology in Greek and Persian medicine are first analyzed. The reciprocal impacts of these two schools of pharmacology are explored, and at the end, the Persian scholars who have cited Greek scholars in their works are introduced. Conclusion: With the expansion of territories, ancient theories from the farthest lands entered the realm, introducing new drugs and ideas, which by the critical approach of the Persian scholars were sometimes modified and developed.

    Abstract: Breast cancer is one of the most common types of malignancies in the world. Cancer resistance is an unavoidable consequence of therapy with radiation or other modalities. On-going research aims to improve cancer response to therapy. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible sensitization effect of imperatorin (IMP) in combination with external radiotherapy (ERT) or HT. Method: After treatment of MCF-7 breast cancer cells with IMP, cells were exposed to 4 Gy X-rays or HT (42 °C for 1 hour). The viability of MCF-7 cells was measured using an MTT assay. Further-more, the expression of pro-apoptotic genes, including Bax, Bcl-2, caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9, was investigated using real-time PCR. The sensitizing effect of IMP in combination with ERT or HT was calculated and compared to ERT or HT alone. Results: Results showed an increase in the expression of pro-apoptotic genes and downregulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 following ERT and HT. Furthermore, cell viability was reduced following these treatments. IMP was able to augment these effects of ERT and HT. Conclusion: IMP could increase the efficiency of HT and ERT. This effect of IMP may suggest it as an adjuvant for increasing the therapeutic efficiency of ERT.

    Abstract: Background: Heart injury is one of the most important concerns after exposure to a high dose of radiation in chest cancer radiotherapy or whole body exposure to a radiation disaster. Studies have proposed that increased level of inflammatory and pro-fibrotic cytokines following radiotherapy or radiation events play a key role in the development of several side effects such as cardiovascular disorders. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the expression of IL-4 and IL-13 cytokines as well as signaling pathways such as IL4Ra1, IL13Ra2, Duox1 and Duox2. In addition, we detected the possible protective effect of curcumin on the expression of these factors and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Materials and Methods: Twenty rats were divided into 4 groups including control; curcumin treated; radiation; and radiation plus curcumin. After 10 weeks, rats were sacrificed for evaluation of mentioned parameters. Results: Results showed an increase in the level of IL-4 and all evaluated genes, as well as increased infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages. Treatment with curcumin could attenuate these changes. Conclusion: Curcumin could reduce radiation-induced heart injury markers in rats.

    Abstract: Following the detection of the first case of infection due to COVID-19 in Iran central province (named Markazi) on 18 Feb 2020, a serious alert was announced at Arak University of Medical Sciences (the main medical university in Markazi province) to prevent a disaster. The performed measures played a unique role in improving patient care and prevention and control of the disease. Previously, it was expected that Markazi province, due to being situated on the junction of the national highways and placing in the center of Iran, was faced with huge health and social crisis. However, fortunately, the disease morbidity and mortality have been placed in a stabilized status after 7 weeks of the epidemic.

    Abstract: Most commonly reported clinical manifestations are fever, fatigue and dry cough. Interestingly, a small percentage of patients experience GI symptoms, with the most common being anorexia, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. We aimed to conduct a comparative study on COVID-19 patients with or without gastrointestinal patients (GI). Aims: The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a dire health problem, causing a massive crisis for global health. Methods: Collective data of clinical manifestations and laboratory reports of patients admitted to Razi Hospital, Ahvaz, Khuzestan, Iran, for two weeks were analyzed. Results: Our results showed that GI symptoms are not statistically significant criteria to be predictive or prognostic factors in COVID-19 patients, although they are probably related to the acute or non-acute phase of the disease. Moreover, non-specific GI symptoms seem to result from cytokine storm that occurred during the disease. Conclusion: Therefore, our results did not support GI tract involvement as a common route of COVID- 19 infection. Maybe future research will shed light on why and how the gastrointestinal system becomes infected by COVID-19.

    Abstract: In this study, we aimed to detect the changes in the level of interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13 cytokines and their downstream genes including interleukin-13 receptor subunit alpha-2 (IL13Ra2), interleukin-4 receptor subunit alpha-1 (IL4Ra1), dual oxidase 1 (DUOX1) and dual oxidase 2 (DUOX2). The protective effects of Selenium-L-methionine on radiation-induced histopathological damages and changes in the level of these cytokines and genes were detected. Methods: Four groups of 20 rats (5 rats in each) namely, control; Selenium-L-methionine, radiation and radiation plus Selenium-L-methionine were used in this study. 4 mg/kg of Selenium-Lmethionine was administered 1 day before irradiation and five consecutive days after irradiation. Irradiation was done using a dose of 15 Gy 60Co gamma rays at 109 cGy/min. All rats were sacrificed 10 weeks after irradiation for detecting changes in IL-4 and IL-13 cytokines, the expressions of IL13Ra2 , IL4Ra1, Duox1 and Duox2 and histopathological changes. Results: The level of IL-4 but not IL-13 increased after irradiation. This was associated with increased expression of IL4Ra1, Duox1 and Duox2, in addition to changes in morphological properties. Selenium-L-methionine could attenuate all injury markers following lung irradiation. Conclusion: Selenium-L-methionine can protect lung tissues against toxic effects of ionizing radiation. It is possible that the modulation of immune responses and redox interactions are involved in the radioprotective effect of this agent.

    Abstract: The concept of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) to promote carcinoma progression has been recognized as a venue for research on novel anticancer drugs. Triaryl template-based structures are one of the pivotal structural features found in a number of compounds with a wide variety of biological properties including anti-breast cancer. Among the various factors triggering EMT program, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), NF-κB as well as the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) have been widely investigated. Objective: Here, we aim to investigate the effect of two novel compounds A and B possessing triaryl structures, which interact with both COX-2 and TGF-β active sites and suppress NF-κB activation, on EMT in a co-culture system with breast cancer and stromal cells. Methods: MDA-MB-231 and bone-marrow mesenchymal stem (BM-MS) cells were co-cultured in a trans-well plate. Migration, matrigel-based invasion and colony formation in soft agar assays along with Real- time PCR and Western blot analysis were performed to examine the effect of compounds A and B on the invasive properties of MDA-MB-231 cells after 72 hours of co-culturing with BM-MSCs. In addition, TGF-beta interaction was investigated by Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR). Results: BM-MSCs enhanced migration, invasion and anchorage-independent growth of the co-cultured MDAMB- 231 cells. A reduction in E-cadherin level concomitant with an increase in vimentin and N-cadherin levels following the co-culture implied EMT as the underlying process. Compounds A and B inhibited invasion and anchorage-independent growth of breast cancer cells co-cultured with BM-MSCs at 10µM. The observed inhibitory effects along with an increase in E-cadherin and a reduction in vimentin and ZEB2 levels suggest that the anti-invasive properties of compounds A and B might proceed through the blockade of stromal cell-induced EMT, mediated by their interaction with TGF-beta. Conclusion: These findings introduce compounds A and B as novel promising agents, which prevent EMT in invasive breast cancer cells.

    Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the proliferation of MCF-7 following irradiation or hyperthermia as alone or pre-treatment with suberosin. Background: Radiotherapy is a major therapeutic modality for the control of breast cancer. However, hyperthermia can be prescribed for relief of pain or enhancing cancer cell death. Some studies have attempted its use as an adjuvant to improve therapeutic efficiency. Suberosin is a cumarin- derived natural agent that has shown anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: In this in vitro study, possible sensitization effect of suberosin in combination with radiation or hyperthermia was evaluated. Methods: MCF-7 breast cancer cells were irradiated or received hyperthermia with or without treatment with suberosin. The incidence of apoptosis as well as viability of MCF-7 cells were observed. Furthermore, the expressions of pro-apoptotic genes such as Bax, Bcl-2, and some caspases were evaluated using real-time PCR. Results: Both radiotherapy or hyperthermia reduced the proliferation of MCF-7 cells. Suberosin amplified the effects of radiotherapy or hyperthermia for induction of pro-apoptotic genes and reducing cell viability. Conclusion: Suberosin has a potent anti-cancer effect when combined with radiotherapy or hyperthermia. It could be a potential candidate for killing breast cancer cells as well as increasing the therapeutic efficiency of radiotherapy or hyperthermia.
