Abstract:
Progressive respiratory insufficiency may be a complication of shock, trauma or sepsis. The pathology of this syndrome is reviewed, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms by which the various factors involved cause diffuse alveolar damage. Other related factors, particularly oxygen toxicity, are discussed and the contributions that they make, both to the clinical syndrome and to the morphological changes in the lungs, are assessed.
