Notes: Abstract The decay of rf signalsδm=±1 between the Zeeman sublevels of mercury atoms in the metastable 63 P 2 state was investigated by means of a sampling method. The density matrix of the state was expanded in terms of irreducible tensor operators. By solving the appropriate differential equations, we were able to show that the time constant of the decay obtained from the measurements is the relaxation time for the longitudinal component of the mean electric quadrupole moment (alignment) of the metastable atoms. The linewidths of the rf resonances reflect the relaxation rates of the transverse components however. From the decay time, the cross sectionσ 0=(1,80±0,11) · 10−14 cm2 for depolarizing collisions between metastable mercury atoms (even isotopes) and ground state atoms was derived. A comparison ofσ 0 with the value which was previously determined from the linewidths of rf resonances, indicates that the relaxation process in a weak magnetic field is essentially isotropic.

Notes: Abstract The hfs in the 72 P 3/2-state of133Cs has been investigated by optical double resonance in a strong magnetic field. From the positions of the magnetic dipole transitions Δm j =± 1, Δm i =0 the magnetic hfs coupling con slanta (72 P 3/2)=16.591(25) MHz and theg j -factorg j (72 P 3/2)=1.33410(15) could be derived. Contrarily to recent measurements,g j agrees well with the value calculated from the Lande formula.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure of the 32P3/2-state in the Na(I)-spektrum was investigated by optical double resonance. Three zero fieldrf-transitions (ΔF=±1, ΔmF=0) were detected and thus the unambiguous interpretation of therf-spectrum was made possible. From an analysis of therf-spectrum one obtains the magnetic hyperfine structure splitting constant a=(18.5 −0.2 +0.6 ) Mc/sec the electric quadrupole interaction constantb=(3.2±0.5) Mc/sec which yields an electric quadrupole moment Q(Na23)=(0.138±0.025)·1024cm2.

Notes: Summary Hemoglobin in beef blood is converted only to about 30% (max. 50%) to the curing pigment by adding 150 mg sodium nitrite to 100 g blood and heating. Raising of nitrite causes a green discoloration by formation of verdiglobin. The development of curing pigment is enhanced to 100% by addition of ascorbic acid (400 mg/100 g blood). Nitrate is formed by auto catalytic oxydation in the rate of 0,5 −1 mol to 1 mol hemoglobin-Fe and in the following step advantageously 1 mol NO-hemoglobin by I mol nitrite. Increasing addition of nitrite leads to a higher consumption due to side-reactions. The variations between the blood samples of different animals are relatively higher than in meat.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. To ascertain whether preoperative short-term radiotherapy can improve local tumor control and the long-term survival of patients with operable rectal cancer, a prospective randomised trial was performed from 1988 to 1993. Ninety-three patients with rectal cancer were either directly treated with surgery (n = 46) or underwent preoperative radiotherapy with 5 × 3.3 Gy irradiation and operation within 48 h (n = 47). If indicated (T4, UICC stage III) patients also received postoperative irradiation. Comparison of the methods of operation (abdominoperineal amputation versus anterior resection) revealed no significant difference in 5-year survival rate (P = 0.393). Local control of R0-resected tumors was improved after preoperative irradiation (P = 0.08). The 5-year survival rate was significantly higher after preoperative short-term radiotherapy (P = 0.027). Preoperative radiotherapy is not an independent factor according to overall survival (P = 0.078) and local recurrence (P = 0.07). In agreement with the results of other authors the present study indicates improved local tumor control of rectal cancer after preoperative radiation therapy. The 5-year survival rate was significantly better after preoperative radiotherapy than after surgery alone.

Notes: Summary In hypernephroma an overall diagnostic sensitivity of 72% and a specificity of 87% was found for the serum tumor marker phosphohexose isomerase (PHI). Both in early stage disease and in well differentiated tumors a sensitivity of about 60% was reached. In contrast the sensitivity of three other glycolytic enzymes tested was found to be less than 20%. Since the cancer induced elevation of PHI activity in the tumor was found to be comparable to those of the other test enzymes, elevated PHI serum activities cannot be attributed to overproportional PHI synthesis and unspecific cell-lysis. In 6 of 10 cases studied differences in the PHI isozyme pattern between the tumor and the normal tissue were found suggesting the occurence of cancer associated structural alterations of PHI.

Notes: Abstract Effects of the iontophoretically administered cholinergic agonists acetylcholine, bethanechol and DMPP on the activity of medullary respiration-related neurons were examined in urethane-anaesthetized rabbits. Inhibitory effects prevailed over excitatory effects. Analysis of cholinergic effects by cycle-triggered averaging revealed three major types of neuronal responses: (i) constant alterations of spike-density throughout the whole period of activity (“constant effects”), (ii) effects increasing during the progression of the burst of discharge or effects restricted to a particular fraction of the burst (“phasic effects”) and (iii) effects which were characterized by an excitation during one respiratory phase and an inhibition during the other phase (“bi-phasic effects”). The latter type of effects was observed in phase-spanning respiration-related neurons. Phasic effects were mainly observed in inspiration-related neurons which were predominantly inhibited by stimulation of muscarinic receptors. Inspiratory Rβ-neurons in no case were phasically affected by cholinergic agents. The mean muscarinic inhibition of inspiration-related neurons increased with the progression of inspiration. The mean nicotinic inhibition of expiration-related neurons decreased with the progression of expiration. Results suggest that the efficacy of (i) a central inspiration terminating mechanism and (ii) the onset of discharge of expiratory neurons is modulated by acetylcholine.
