Notes: A picosecond pump-probe technique is used to measure the room-temperature thermal conductivity κ and longitudinal sound velocity cl of amorphous diamond (a-D) and diamondlike carbon (DLC) thin films. Both κ and cl were found to decrease with film hydrogen content. Depending on the film deposition technique, κ is in the range 5–10×10−2 W cm−1 K−1 for a-D, and 3–10×10−3 W cm−1 K−1 for DLC. Values of cl were found to be in the range 14–18×105 cm s−1 for a-D, and 6–9×105 cm s−1 for DLC.

Notes: A method for the determination of the displacements in ultrasonic waves on surfaces of solids is presented. The technique is based on the scanning tunneling microscope and the measurements are performed in real space. The design of a low-temperature microscope capable of operating at liquid-helium temperature is shown. A simple theory is given, which describes the observations in a satisfactory way.

Notes: The refractive index of CdTe was determined from interference maxima in the transparency region from 10 to 295 K. Parameters in a four-oscillator model were fitted to experimental data and an empirical formula for the refractive index is given. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Hall mobility of electrons μH is measured in CdTe in the temperature interval 450–1050 °C and defined Cd overpressure in near-intrinsic conditions. The strong decrease of μH above 600 °C is reported. The effect is explained within a model of multivalley conduction where both electrons in Γ1c minimum and in L1c minima participate. The theoretical description is based on the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation within the relaxation time approximation including the polar and acoustic phonon intravalley and intervalley scatterings. The Γ1c to L1c separation ΔE=0.29−10−4T (eV) for the effective mass in the L valley mL=0.35m0 is found to best fit the experimental data. Such ΔE is about four times smaller than it is predicted by first-principle calculations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The focal point of a laser beam inside a liquid-helium cryostat has been spatially stabilized. Both passive and active stabilization techniques are employed. The position of the focal point is maintained to submicrometer dimensions in the plane transverse to the beam path. The instabilities along the beam propagation direction are reduced to the order of 10 μm.

Notes: Based on the photoacoustic effect we have developed a cell for application in optical spectroscopy at low temperatures (between 1 and 2 K). A superconducting bolometer serves as a detector for temperature waves (so-called second sound) in liquid helium. These waves are generated after transformation of the absorbed light energy into heat due to nonradiative decay in the sample. The cell consists of an elliptical mirror with two focal points, in which the sample and the detector are placed. In this article we show some characteristic properties of the cell. In addition to that we present an absorption spectrum of a doped inorganic glass as a first example of possible applications of the photoacoustic method. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A number of commercially available digital correlators is discussed with respect to algorithms, systematic errors, and statistical errors. Special attention has been paid to the determination of an influence of the temporal integration of measured signals on autocorrelation functions measured in digital correlators. A calculation of the standard deviation for statistical errors in correlation estimators has been performed. The result is compared with the experiment. Favorable noise properties of the multiple-tau correlator which have been reported in the literature are not confirmed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Dielectric films have been prepared by radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition from mixtures of tetramethylsilane with oxygen. The films have been characterized as-deposited and after annealing at 400 °C to determine the thermal stability of their properties. Rutherford backscattering and forward recoil elastic scattering have been used for determination of the composition of the films. Optical properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and measurements of the index of refraction and optical gap. The electrical properties were measured in a Si/insulator/metal configuration. It has been found that the index of refraction decreases and the optical gap and dielectric constant increase with increasing oxygen concentration in the gas feed. While the materials did not show a mass or composition loss after annealing, the annealing resulted in a reduction of the dielectric constant of the films. Dielectric constants as low as 3.1 have been obtained after annealing the film deposited from pure tetramethylsilane. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The dissociation of chlorosilanes to microcrystalline silicon and its deposition on a solid substrate in a rf plasma of mixtures of argon and hydrogen was investigated as a function of the macrovariables of the plasma. The dissociation mechanism of chlorosilanes and HCl as well as the formation of silicon in the plasma state were studied by sampling the plasma with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Macrovariables such as pressure, net rf power input, and location in the plasma reactor were found to strongly influence the kinetics of dissociation. The deposition process of microcrystalline silicon films and its chlorine contamination were correlated to the dissociation mechanism of chlorosilanes and to the role of hydrogen chloride.

Notes: Hard-carbon films prepared by the rf-plasma decomposition of acetylene have been investigated by high-resolution 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the H(15Nα,γ)C nuclear resonant reaction. It was found that the ratio of sp2:sp3 bound carbon was 1.6, and that virtually all sp3 carbon atoms are, in fact, bound to one or more hydrogen atoms. Bulk layers contain about 40% hydrogen; however, results of the measurements of the hydrogen concentration, as well as those of XPS, confirm that the composition and properties of these carbon films are a strong function of their distance from the initial growth interface, and are spatially varying over the first 40 nm.
