Notes: An irreversible light-enhanced degradation has been observed in amorphous silicon solar cells exposed to intense illumination (50 suns) at elevated temperature ((approximately-greater-than)130 °C). Unlike the light-induced degradation observed at lower temperatures, the light-enhanced degradation observed at elevated temperatures is not reversed by annealing and it not suppressed by a strong reverse bias. An analysis of the time decay of the short-wavelength spectral response at various temperatures indicates that the degradation mechanism is associated with the diffusion of hydrogen at elevated temperatures both in the dark and under intense illumination. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The light-induced degradation of amorphous silicon solar cells can be reversed by the application of a strong electric field in the dark, and the rate of reversal increases with field strength, temperature, and light intensity. The activation energy for annealing the degradation in the dark is reduced from about 1.34 eV under open circuit conditions to 1.16 eV by applying a strong reverse bias. When the degraded cells are exposed to intense illumination in addition to a strong reverse bias, the activation energy for the recovery of the performance decreases to about 0.77 eV. Both the light-induced degradation and the reversal of the degradation can be explained by a model based on proton motion within a metastable defect complex. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electric field-enhanced degradation has been observed in amorphous silicon solar cells exposed to intense illumination (45–60 suns) at elevated temperatures ((approximately-greater-than)160 °C). The front tin oxide contacts of both p–i–n and n–i–p cells darken significantly when a strong reverse bias is applied at elevated temperatures and under intense illumination. Compositional profiles of the cells show that a strong reverse bias causes a depletion of hydrogen near the contacts. These results are interpreted in terms of proton motion near the p/i interface of p–i–n cells and negative hydrogen ion motion near the i/n interface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A strong electric field has been shown to reverse the light-induced degradation of amorphous silicon solar cells while exposed to intense illumination at moderate temperatures. The rate of reversal increases with temperature, illumination intensity, and with the strength of the reverse bias field. The reversal process exhibits an activation energy on the order of 0.9 eV and can be increased by the trapping of either electrons or holes in the presence of a strong electric field. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have found that polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in 3% gels in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate is suitable for the separation of cellular glycoproteins having molecular weights ranging from 200,000 to 1,000,000. The gels secured on a rigid support (Gelbond) allow blotting techniques with lectins and antibodies for the detection of glycoproteins. Using these methods we have separated lysates of HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells and detected at Jeast four distinct high molecular weight Sialoglycoproteins having molecular weights of 900,000, 740.000, 560,000, and 450,000. The expression of the 9000,000 component, as revealed by wheat germ agglutinin binding, was much higher in a subline of HT-29 cells established from liver metastases in a nude mouse than it was in the parental cells. The relative intensity of wheat germ agglutinin binding to these four sialoglycoprotein components differs depending upon their growth phase in vitro. These glycoproteins were also detectable by the binding of peanut agglutinin, provided the glycoproteins were previously treated in the gels with mild acid to remove the sialic acid from their carbohydrate chains, suggesting that mucin-type carbohydrate chains are present on these glycoproteins. The same set of glycoproteins can be detected by metabolic labeling of the cells with [3H] glucosamine in tissue culture. Very similar glycoprotein profiles are revealed by metabolic labeling of fresh colon carcinoma tissues with [3H] glucosamine in vitro.

Notes: Stress relaxation master curves were obtained for polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, and polyvinyl chloride, all plasticized with dioctylphthalate. The plasticized polyvinyl chloride results were quite different from the others, and this was tentatively ascribed to borderline crystallinity.

Notes: A series of phosphonitrilic fluoroelastomers which have excellent solvent resistance and low temperature flexibility, and which perform well under a broad range of service conditions, have been developed. The solution properties of one of these polymers were studied more extensively in order to develop suitable quality control procedures and to gain a better understanding of the polymer structure. Solvents for these procedures were established, fractionation procedures were developed, and intrinsic viscosity, osmotic pressure, and light-scattering measurements were conducted. We found this polymer to have a very broad molecular weight distribution. And, although fractionation by molecular weight was effected, the fractions retained a broad molecular weight distribution. Our data do not indicate significant branching for this polymer. As a result of our studies, we have theorized that a supermolecular structure may be present in this polymer.

Notes: Various theories accounting for the existence of a front factor in the equation of state for rubber elasticity are reviwed. It is shown that a front factor which may be different from unity exists whether or not intramolecular energy effects are present. A unified theory is presented which is applicable both to Gaussian chains and to chains with intramolecular folding energy. Stress-temperature measurements were used to obtain values of the intramolecular folding energy ∊′ for numerous crosslinked polyacrylates and polymethacrylates. The values of ∊′ for almost all of the polyacrylates were found to be approximately zero; the values of ∊′ for the polymethacrylates varied generally between -350 and -700 cal./mole, indicating a preference for folded configurations. The front factors were also determined for these crosslinked polymers at 60°C. The front factor appears relatively independent of the degree of crosslinking. There appears to be a general trend to smaller front factors as the size of the alkyl chain increases in both series. An interpretation in terms of network interpenetration is given in the text. The variation of ∊′ with copolymer composition has been determined for a series of butyl acrylate-butyl methacrylate copolymers. The value of ∊′ for isotactic amorphous poly(1-pentene) was also measured and found to be zero. Finally, the effect of diluent on the front factor is discussed for the case where diluent is present during the crosslinking process and for the case where it is added after crosslinking.

Notes: Cuticular alkanes obtained from larvae and adults of six species of tephritid fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens, A. suspensa, Ceratitis capitata, C. rosa, Dacus cucurbitae, and D. dorsalis were analyzed by gas chromatography. The same four major alkanes were shown to be present by capillary GC-mass spectra in all Anastrepha and Ceratitis larvae. Profiles were obtained from individual larvae and adult specimens that showed statistical differences between species, whereas profiles of conspecific life forms including pupae of A. suspensa from different locations showed some similarities. Sexual dimorphism was not observed in alkanes extracted from adults. A novel series of alkadienes was found in all Anastrepha and Ceratitis but not in Dacus.
