    Notes: We report on the observation of photon-assisted resonant tunneling in a multiple quantum well structure composed of doped quantum wells separated by variably spaced superlattice energy filters. Electrons confined in the quantum wells are excited to the second quantized state by intersubband absorption of incident infrared radiation and are subsequently emitted through the filters under appropriate bias conditions. This is manifested by a distinct peak, with an associated negative differential photoconductance, in the photocurrent versus bias voltage characteristic at low temperatures.

    Notes: Summary Fifteen patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia have been randomized for treatment with daunorubicin (1.0–1.5 mg/kg) either as the free drug (for 45 min or 4 h) or as the drug bound to a DNA carrier (for 5–6 h). The correlation between plasma kinetics of daunorubicin and its main metabolite daunorubicinol and the different administration schedules of daunorubicin has been studied by reversed-phase liquid chromatography. Plasma concentration kinetics of daunorubicin as well as the daunorubicin-DNA complex was biphasic in character. Maximum plasma level of daunorubicin was found during the infusion period. Its concentration decreased rapidly when the infusion stopped and was below the detection limit of the analytical method 2–4 h later. The data suggests a slower disposition of the daunorubicin-DNA complex compared with the free drug.

    Notes: Summary Rabbit antisera against native human insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I; somatomedin C) or a synthetic tetradeca peptide, representing the carboxyterminal amino acids 57–70 of human IGF-I, were used to map immunohistochemically the distribution of IGF-I immunoreactive material in adult rats. Both antisera were specific for IGF-I, as characterized by immunoabsorption, immunoblotting and radioimmunoassay. There was no cross-reactivity to IGF-II, relaxin or pro-insulin; substances having a high degree of structural homology with IGF-I. High IGF-I immunoreactivity was observed in spermatocytes of the testis; in oocytes, granulosa and theca interna cells of the ovary during early stages of follicle development; in some lymphocytes and in reticular cells of lymphoid and hematopoetic organs; in salivary gland duct cells; in the adrenal medulla, the parathyroid gland and the Langerhans' islets. Chondrocytes in the epiphyseal and rib growth plates and at articular surfaces showed strong IGF-I immunoreactivity. Brown but not white fat cells were stained. Nerve cells in the peripheral and autonomic nervous system showed faint to intense IGF-I immunoreactivity. In contrast, neurons and neuroglial cells in the central nervous system were generally negative; motor neurons being an exception. Erythropoeitic, trombocytopoeitic and myeloic cells in the bone marrow showed IGF-I immunoreactivity, but only at defined developmental stages. Hepatocytes showed faint IGF-I immunoreactivity, but became more intensely stained after pretreatment with colchicine. The present results suggest that IGF-I is synthetized by cells in several tissues and organs in the adult rat. There was an apparent association between the localization of IGF-I and cell differentiation. Certain cells involved in secretory processes also displayed high IGF-I immunoreactivity. The wide distribution of IGF-I indicates that the circulating pool of IGF-I has multiple origins.

    Notes: Abstract Active site substituted Cd(II) horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase has been studied by Perturbed Angular Correlation of Gamma rays Spectroscopy during turnover conditions for benzaldehyde and 4-trans-(N,N-dimethylamino)cinnamaldehyde. The ternary complex between alcohol dehydrogenase NAD+ and Cl−, and the binary complex between alcohol dehydrogenase and orthophenanthroline have also been studied. The Nuclear Quadrupole Interaction parameters have been interpreted in terms of different coordination geometries for Cd(II) in the catalytic zinc site of the enzyme. Calculation of the nuclear quadrupole interaction for cadmium in the catalytic site of the enzyme with and without coenzyme, based upon the four coordinated geometries determined from X-ray diffraction, agrees with the experimentally determined values. The ternary complexes between enzyme, NAD+ and either Cl− or trifluoroethanol and the binary complex between enzyme and orthophenanthroline have almost identical spectral parameters which are not consistent with a four coordinated geometry, but are consistent with a five coordinated geometry. The nonprotein ligands for the ternary complex with trifluoroethanol are suggested to be an alkoxide group and a water molecule. The Nuclear Quadrupole Interaction parameters for the productive ternary complex between enzyme, NADH and an aldehyde is consistent with the four coordinated geometry predicted from X-ray diffraction data having the carbonyl group of the aldehyde substituting the water molecule as ligand to the metal.

    Notes: Abstract The Forest Roof project at Lake Gårdsjön located on the Swedish Southwest coast near Gothenburg was established to assess the response of the ecosystem following a major reduction in loading of sulfur acidic deposition. The objective of the study was to describe the adsorption-desorption processes of sulfate in Haplorthod soils at the Gårdsjön site. A sequential batch technique was used to sequentially leach the upper three mineral horizons with forest floor leachate containing different concentrations of sulfate. Results showed that adsorption-desorption processes were highly irreversible and hysterestic in nature. Moreover, the soil solution SO4 2-, pH and DOC were interrelated. These findings suggest that improvements in the prediction capability of models for acidified surface waters, lakes and soils are needed. Therefore, existing sulfate models with fully reversible Langmuir or Freundlich approaches need to account for additional irreversible reactions.
