Notes: The Fock-space coupled-cluster method with single and double excitations (CCSD or SUB2) is applied to the calculation of the electron affinities of all five halogen elements, F–At. Excellent agreement with experiment is obtained, the average error being 0.04 eV. The inclusion of triple excitations for F and Cl spoils the agreement. Comparison with other methods is made.

Notes: Picosecond excitation-probe measurements using a far-infrared free-electron laser (CLIO) have revealed large nonlinearities for indium antimonide at 4.7 μm. A theoretical model is described to determine the cw third-order nonlinear susceptibility and the interband relaxation time of the semiconductor which were found to be −8.6×10−11 m2 V−2 and 0.3 ns, respectively. Furthermore, the observation of the associated coherent transient grating effects allows us to obtain a coherence time of the laser system (2.5 ps) and the χ(3) of the transient grating which was found to be −7.2×10−13 m2 V−2. The measurements were performed at room temperature on undoped bulk InSb. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An aerosol flow reactor operating at 900–1000 °C is used to prepare high-purity Y1Ba2Cu3O7 powders with a uniform chemical composition and a submicron to micron average particle size by thermally decomposing aerosol droplets of a solution consisting of the nitrate salts of Y, Ba, and Cu in a 1:2:3 ratio. The powders were at least 99% reacted based on thermogravimetric analysis, and the x-ray diffraction pattern is essentially that of Y1Ba2Cu3O7. Magnetic susceptibility measurements showed the powders to be superconducting with a transition at 90 K even for average reactor residence times as short as 20 s. Sintering cold-pressed pellets between 900 and 1000 °C provides dense, fine grained (average size on the order of 1 μm) superconducting ceramics with sharp 90 K transitions. The grain size and shape of a final sintered part could be varied depending on powder production, processing, and sintering conditions.

Notes: We demonstrate theoretically that an intense half-cycle terahertz pulse can be used conjunctively with a quantum-well optical amplifier to form the basis of an efficient ultrahigh-speed optical switch. Our procedure implies terahertz and subterahertz switching and recovery rates, respectively. Constraints and practicalities are discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The picosecond optical limiting characteristics of the optical limiting dyes hexamethylindotricarbocyanine iodide (HITCI) and chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (CAP) are compared and contrasted at 532 nm. From single pulse transmittance experiments, HITCI is shown to possess a serious limitation in its optical limiting behavior, where the regime of induced absorption becomes one of induced transmission for high irradiances. CAP, on the other hand, although possessing a smaller ratio of the excited-state to ground-state absorption cross-section, continues to exhibit optical limiting over a much broader dynamic range. From cross-polarized time-resolved excitation-probe measurements, HITCI exhibits a sharp negative spike around zero delay which originates from orientational coherent grating effects, while CAP does not exhibit any spike. These nonlinearities are explained theoretically as a complex interplay between a series of excited manifolds for the dyes and the radiation properties of the interacting laser pulse. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A simple method for the measurement of clozapine and its N-desmethyl metabolite in human pläsma or serum by high performance liquid chromatography is described. An internal standard (aqueous nortriptyline, 4 mg/L) (50 μL) and Tris buffer (2 mol/L, pH 10.6) (100 μL) are added to plasma/serum (200 μL) and the analytes and internal standard extracted into methyl tert-butyl ether (200 μL). The extracts are analysed on a 150 mm column containing Spherisorb S5SCX using methanol containing ammonium perchlorate (35 mmol/L, pH 6.7) as eluent at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min. Detection is by ultraviolet absorption (215 nm). The limit of detection is better than 0.05 mg/L for both analytes and the intra-assay precision (CV) for clozapine and norclozapine was 5.3 and 7.3% at 0.5 mg/L and 2.6 and 2.8% at 1.5 mg/L, respectively. The method can be applied to the measurement of these compounds in plasma after acute overdosage, for the assessment of compliance in patients apparently refractory to therapy and to identify interactions between clozapine and other neuroleptic and antidepressant drugs which may effect toxicity.

Notes: Self-cycling fermentation (SCF) in a stirred tank reactor was applied to the biodegradation of phenol by Pseudomonas putida. The technique resulted in stable and repeatable performance. Complete substrate consumption was achieved under all operating conditions investigated. SCF resulted in substrate utilization rates as high as 14.5 kg of phenol per cubic meter of fermentor volume per day of fermentation, higher than those that have been reported for batch, CSTR, and packed column fermentors. A mathematical model of the self-cycling fermentation process was expanded to include inhibitory substrate-microorganism combinations, and was shown to provide a good fit to both end-of-cycle and intracycle experimental data. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A large collection (105) of mouse L cell mutants lacking hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase activity (HGPRT; E. C. 2.4.2.8) were analyzed for the presence of serologically cross reacting material (CRM). Antibody directed against highly purified mouse liver HGPRT was used for detecting CRM activity by two methods: (1) the standard precipitation-inhibition assay; and (2) a radioimmune-precipitation assay. The latter assay proved to have far greater sensitivity for the detection of altered forms of HGPRT. Approximately 40% of the HGPRT- cell lines contain CRM activity (i.e., were CRM+). This indicates that a minimum of 40% of the HGPRT- clones arose as a result of mutations in the HGPRT structural gene. The CRM+ cell lines were shown to contain different levels of CRM activity. Measurements of the heat sensitivity of CRM in the different HGPRT- cell lines showed a broad spectrum of CRM heat inactivation kinetics. These latter two observations provide strong evidence that the mutations giving rise to the HGPRT-CRM+ phenotype occurred at different sites in the HGPRT structural gene.

Notes: The coupled-cluster method is applied to high sectors of the Fock space (up to five electrons outside a closed shell). Ionization potentials and excitation energies are calculated for atomic N, O, F, P, and S and their ions. The effect of virtual triple excitations is included, exactly or at several levels of appoximation. These terms are important for accurate results in the high sectors. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: B chromosomes are small, heterochromatic chromosomes that are transmitted in a non-Mendelian manner. We have identified a stock of Drosophila melanogaster that recently (within the last decade) acquired an average of 10 B chromosomes per fly. These B chromosomes are transmitted by both males and females and can be maintained for multiple generations in a wild-type genetic background despite the fact that they cause high levels of 4 th chromosome meiotic nondisjunction in females. Most curiously, these B chromosomes are mitotically unstable, suggesting either the absence of critical chromosomal sites or the inability of the meiotic or mitotic systems to cope with many additional chromosomes. These B chromosomes also contain centromeres and are primarily composed of the heterochromatic AATAT satellite sequence. Although the AATAT sequence comprises the majority of the 4 th chromosome heterochromatin, the B chromosomes lack most, if not all, 4 th chromosome euchromatin. Presumably as a consequence of their heterochromatic content, these B chromosomes significantly modify position-effect variegation in two separate reporter systems, acting as enhancers of variegation in one case and suppressors in the other. The identification of B chromosomes in a genetically tractable organism like D. melanogaster will facilitate studies of chromosome evolution and the analysis of the mechanisms by which meiotic and mitotic processes cope with additional chromosomes.
