    Notes: An inorganic polymer-platinum complex, magnesiasupported polytitanzane-platinum complex (MgO—Ti—N—Pt), was prepared and used to catalyze the oxygenation of benzyl alcohol. It was found that this kind of catalyst has great activity and stability in the reaction. The objective product (benzaldehyde) was obtained in 100% yield in 6 hr under a moderate reaction temperature and atmospheric oxygen pressure. This inorganic polymer complex was also very stable during the reaction.

    Description: A new indole alkaloid, streptomycindole ( 1 ), and a known related compound, N -phenylacetyl- L -tryptophan ( 2 ), have been isolated from Streptomyces sp . DA22, associated with South China Sea sponge Craniella australiensis. Their structures were established on the basis of a combination of mass spectrometry, 1 H- and 13 C-NMR spectroscopic analyses, and chemical methods.

    Description: The incorporation of emissions minimization in the vehicle routing problem (VRP) is of critical importance to enterprise practice. Focusing on the tractor and semitrailer routing problem with full truckloads between any two terminals of the network, this paper proposes a mathematical programming model with the objective of minimizing emissions per ton-kilometer. A simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is given to solve practical-scale problems. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a lower bound is developed. Computational experiments on various problems generated randomly and a realistic instance are conducted. The results show that the proposed methods are effective and the algorithm can provide reasonable solutions within an acceptable computational time.

    Description: Infrared (IR) land surface emissivity (LSE) with a high temporal and spatial resolution is very important for deriving other products using IR radiance measurements as well as assimilating IR radiances in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models over land. Retrieved from various satellite instruments, many LSE databases are available for operational and research use. Most are updated only monthly; assuming emissivity does not change within the month. However, laboratory measurements have shown that emissivity increases by 1.7% to 16% when soil moisture content becomes higher, especially in sandy soils in the 8.2–9.2 μm range. And a clearly defined wave-like diurnal pattern of decreasing surface soil moisture during the day and recovery (or increased soil moisture) at night was observed. Therefore, it is expected that LSE possesses a diurnal wave-pattern variation with low values during day time and high values during nighttime. The physically based GOES-R ABI LSE algorithm uniquely exploits the geostationary satellites' high temporal resolution. The algorithm was developed and applied to the radiance measurements from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) on the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) Meteosat-8/9. The results over the Sahara Desert show that 8.7 μm emissivity has a significant diurnal wave-pattern variation, with high values during nighttime and low values during day time. 10.8 μm emissivity also shows a similar diurnal variation, but with a smaller amplitude compared to 8.7 μm. 12.0 μm emissivity has an even weaker diurnal variation, and an opposite pattern as 8.7 and 10.8 μm. Evidence is provided to demonstrate that the SEVIRI LSE diurnal wave-pattern variations are real, not artifacts from the retrieval algorithm. The impacts of diurnal variations of errors in GFS forecast (temperature and moisture profiles) and in land surface temperature (LST) are analyzed; they are found to be minor compared to the LSE diurnal variations shown by SEVIRI.

    Description: The performance of a diagnostic tool yielding quantitative or ordinal measurements is often assessed in terms of its area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). As new diagnostic tools are constantly being developed, a frequently occurring task is to compare multiple AUCs as derived from the same group of subjects. For this purpose, previous methods have usually used an omnibus chi-square test, which may not be very informative. We present here methods for comparing several correlated AUCs using simultaneous confidence intervals. To improve small sample properties, we adopt the method of variance estimates recovery in which confidence limits for each AUC are obtained on the basis of the logit and inverse hyperbolic sine transformations. A simulation study demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed approach. The methods are illustrated with two examples. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Description: Cardiac hypertrophy is characterized by increased myofibrillogenesis. Angiotensin II (Ang-II) is an essential mediator of the pressure overload–induced cardiac hypertrophy in part through RhoA/ROCK (small GTPase/Rho-associated coiled-coil containing protein kinase) pathway. FHOD3 (formin homology 2 domain containing 3), a cardiac-restricted member of diaphanous-related formins, is crucial in regulating myofibrillogenesis in cardiomyocytes. FHOD3 maintains inactive through autoinhibition by an intramolecular interaction between its C- and N-terminal domains. Phosphorylation of the 3 highly conserved residues (1406S, 1412S, and 1416T) within the C terminus (CT) of FHOD3 by ROCK1 is sufficient for its activation. However, it is unclear whether ROCK-mediated FHOD3 activation plays a role in the pathogenesis of Ang-II–induced cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we detected increases in FHOD3 expression and phosphorylation in cardiomyocytes from Ang-II–induced rat cardiac hypertrophy models. Valsartan attenuated such increases. In cultured neonate rat cardiomyocytes, overexpression of phosphor-mimetic mutant FHOD3-DDD, but not wild-type FHOD3, resulted in myofibrillogenesis and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Expression of a phosphor-resistant mutant FHOD3-AAA completely abolished myofibrillogenesis and attenuated Ang-II–induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Pretreatment of neonate rat cardiomyocytes with ROCK inhibitor Y27632 reduced Ang-II–induced FHOD3 activation and upregulation, suggesting the involvement of ROCK activities. Silencing of ROCK2, but not ROCK1, in neonate rat cardiomyocytes, significantly lessened Ang-II–induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. ROCK2 can directly phosphorylate FHOD3 at both 1412S and 1416T in vitro and is more potent than ROCK1. Both kinases failed to phosphorylate 1406S. Coexpression of FHOD3 with constitutively active ROCK2 induced more stress fiber formation than that with constitutively active ROCK1. Collectively, our results demonstrated the importance of ROCK2 regulated FHOD3 expression and activation in Ang-II–induced myofibrillogenesis, thus provided a novel mechanism for the pathogenesis of Ang-II–induced cardiac hypertrophy.
