Notes: A detailed study has been undertaken on crack healing at high temperatures in a silicon nitride containing 10 wt% additives in order to identify the dominant mechanism responsible for the phenomenon. Fracture toughness increased with annealing time and the crack growth rate decreased until arrest with increasing testing time. Differentiation between possible operating mechanisms was obtained using critical experiments involving detailed compliance measurements, crack wake removal, and crack reinitiation tests and a comprehensive TEM study of healed cracks. It was found that crack healing was not uniform in the crack wake. When the original crack path was either transgranular or intergranular, healing was associated with the appearance of a thin layer of silica glass due to the oxidation of Si3N4 grains. But when the crack went through multigrain junctions, the former crack path was completely obliterated and replaced by a new, crystalline phase formed by diffusion of the preexisting glass phase. It is concluded that the increased crack growth resistance and fracture toughness at high temperature is attributable to the partial recovery of the original strength from the crack segments at multigrain junctions due to vitreous phase flow and subsequent crystallization.

Notes: A study was made of the wet erosive wear of polycrystalline alumina of mean grain size 〉1 μm, containing up to 10 wt% of magnesium silicate sintering aid. For pure polycrystalline alumina, the dominant wear mechanism was grain-boundary microfracture, leading to partial or complete grain removal. In the case of the liquid-phase-sintered materials, wear rates could be as low as 25% of those of pure alumina of the same mean grain size, and the main material removal mechanism was transgranular fracture combined with tribochemical wear. The use of Cr3+ photoluminescence line broadening showed much higher levels of local stress in the magnesium silicate-sintered materials (∼450 MPa) than in the pure-alumina materials (∼200 MPa). Grain-boundary compressive hoop stresses, caused by the thermal expansion mismatch between a continuous magnesium silicate film and the alumina grains, provided an explanation for the improved wear resistance of the alumina sintered with magnesium silicate.

Notes: In the cation of the title compound, C15H16NO+·C24H20B−, the pyridyl ring makes a dihedral angle of 14.03° with the phenyl ring. The anion has a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry and forms honeycomb-like sheets which extend along the b axis, forming channels containing the cations. A comparison of packing energies reveals a difference between the title compound and a similar material which has non-linear optical properties.

Notes: In the title compound, C25H19NO4, the indole moiety is not completely planar, the heterocyclic ring being distorted very slightly towards a half-chair conformation. The benzoyl and 4-methoxyphenyl substituents are individually almost planar and are in a bisecting and nearly perpendicular configuration, respectively, with respect to the plane of the indole moiety. The molecular and packing structures in the crystal are stabilized by intramolecular and intermolecular C—H...O interactions.

Notes: In the title compound, C24H17NO4, the oxetane ring deviates from planarity. The benzofuran and indole moieties are in synclinal configurations, and the attached phenyl ring forms a dihedral angle of 68.0 (2)° with respect to the oxetane ring. Intramolecular C—H...O interactions stabilize the molecular structure.

Notes: In the title compound, C18H13NO4, both the indole and benzofuran moieties are nearly planar, and are in an equatorial configuration relative to each other. The O atom of the acetyl group is involved in a weak intramolecular C—H...O hydrogen bond with the indole, and a stronger intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bond with the hydroxy group, which stabilize the molecular and crystal-packing structures.

Description: Background: High invasion and metastasis are the primary factors causing poor prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these biological behaviors have not been completely elucidated. In this study, we investigate the molecular mechanism by which hypoxia promotes HCC invasion and metastasis through inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Methods: The expression of EMT markers was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Effect of hypoxia on induction of EMT and ability of cell migration and invasion were performed. Luciferase reporter system was used for evaluation of Snail regulation by hypoxia-inducible factor -1alpha (HIF-1alpha). Results: We found that overexpression of HIF-1alpha was observed in HCC liver tissues and was related to poor prognosis of HCC patients. HIF-1alpha expression profile was correlated with the expression levels of SNAI1, E-cadherin, N-cadherin and Vimentin. Hypoxia was able to induce EMT and enhance ability of invasion and migration in HCC cells. The same phenomena were also observed in CoCl2-treated cells. The shRNA-mediated HIF-1alpha suppression abrogated CoCl2-induced EMT and reduced ability of migration and invasion in HCC cells. Luciferase assay showed that HIF-1alpha transcriptional regulated the expression of SNAI1 based on two hypoxia response elements (HREs) in SNAI1 promoter. Conclusions: We demonstrated that hypoxia-stabilized HIF1alpha promoted EMT through increasing SNAI1 transcription in HCC cells. This data provided a potential therapeutic target for HCC treatment.

Description: ObjectiveCigarette smoking had been confirmed as an increased risk for dyslipidemia, but none of the evidence was from long-lived population. In present study, we detected relationship between cigarette smoking habits and serum lipid/lipoprotein (serum Triglyceride (TG), Total cholesterol (TC), Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)) among Chinese Nonagenarians/Centenarian. Methods: The present study analyzed data from the survey that was conducted on all residents aged 90 years or more in a district, there were 2,311,709 inhabitants in 2005. Unpaired Student's t test, chi2 test, and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze datas. Results: The individuals included in the statistical analysis were 216 men and 445 women. Current smokers had lower level of TC (4.05 +/- 0.81 vs. 4.21 +/- 0.87, t = 2.403, P = 0.017) and lower prevalence of hypercholesteremia (9.62% vs. 15.13%, chi2 = 3.018,P = 0.049) than nonsmokers. Unadjusted and adjusted multiple logistic regressions showed that cigarette smoking was not associated with risk for abnormal serum lipid/lipoprotein. Conclusions: In summary, we found that among Chinese nonagenarians/centenarians, cigarette smoking habits were not associated with increased risk for dyslipidemia, which was different from the association of smoking habits with dyslipidemia in general population.
