Notes: A bacterium identified as Proteus mirabilis was isolated from acclimated sludge from a dyeing wastewater treatment plant. This strain rapidly decolorized a deep red azo dye solution (RED RBN). Features of the decolorizing process related to biodegradation and biosorption were also studied. Although P. mirabilis displayed good growth in shake culture, color removal was best in anoxic static cultures. For color removal, the optimal pH and temperature were 6.5–7.5 and 30–35°C, respectively. The organism exhibited a remarkable color removal capability, even at a high concentration of azo dye. More than 95% of azo dye was reduced within 20 h at a dye concentration of 1.0 g L−1. Decolorization appears to proceed primarily by enzymatic reduction associated with a minor portion, 13–17%, of biosorption to inactivated microbial cells.

Notes: Abstract Let Ω(n) be the number of all prime divisors ofn and ω(n) the number of distinct prime divisors ofn. We definev q (x)∶=|{n≤x∶Ω(n)−ω(n)=q}|. In this paper, we give an asymptotic development ofv q (x); this improves on previous results.

Notes: Abstract The linear electrooptic (EO) effect of poled polymer thin film is measured in the coplanar-electrode structure. The optical geometry of the coplanar-electrode thin-film setup is analysed theoretically to find a relationship between the linear optical parameters and the EO modulation intensity. EO modulated intensity is measured as a function of the direction of incident light polarization relative to the macroscopic optic axis, also as a function of optical bias determined by quarter-wave plate. Comparison of experimental measurements with the theoretical analysis shows good agreement.

Notes: Abstract General results on the existence and global continuation of rotating waves are established for partial neutral functional differential equations defined on the unit circle. These results are applied to a class of coupled lossless transmission lines.

Notes: Abstract Fatigue behavior of carbon fiber reinforced poly etheretherketone (PEEK) laminated composite was investigated. The [±45]4s AS-4/PEEK laminated composites under static tensile measurement at various test temperatures were conducted. Three tension-tension fatigue loading frequencies, 1 Hz, 5 Hz and 10 Hz, were selected to study the effect of frequency on the fatigue behavior of [±45]4s AS-4/PEEK laminate. The survival probability of experimental fatigue life data under different stress amplitude tests were estimated and analyzed by the median rank order-statistic cumulative-distribution function and the Weibull distribution function. The S-N curves at different fatigue loading frequencies exhibited a trend of two-segment straight line curves. The increase in surface temperature of specimens was found and the thermal stress history was also investigated by thermo-image techniques during fatigue life testing. The fatigue failure mechanism was investigated by X-ray radiography.

Notes: Abstract The hygrothermal effects on the fatigue behavior of the Carbon/PEEK laminated composites before and after impact damage were examined in this study. The [0/45/90/-45]2s AS-4/PEEK laminated composites were immersed in 80°C hot water for 45, 90 and 200 days, and subjected to falling weight impact with an energy of 8.58 J and then immersed in 80°C hot water for 45 days. It was found that the tensile strength of AS-4/PEEK laminated composites decreased with the increase of exposure period. The injured AS-4/PEEK composites were subjected to a static load and a tensiontension fatigue load at various levels of stress amplitudes. The effect of stress amplitude on the fatigue life was studied. The experimental fatigue life under different stress amplitude tests were estimated by the median rank order statistic cumulative distribution function. Then, the fitting curves for estimated data were analyzed by the Weibull distribution function. The S-N curves for a series of cyclic loads at various survival probabilities were presented. The damage behaviors of composites after fatigue load test were also investigated by scanning electron microscope(SEM). Results indicated the fatigue lives of immersed specimens were shorter than those without hygrothermal effect, the impact damage affects the fatigue life of composite significantly.

Notes: Abstract We consider compartmental models for the mathematical description of many biological processes in which the material transport between compartments takes a nonnegligible length of time and each compartment produces or swallows materials. The proposed mathematical model is a neutral functional differential equation. We describe some of the global dynamics of the solutions to the linear model equation.

Notes: Summary In the rat, elevating dopamine content in corpus striatum with electrical stimulation of substantia nigra or direct administration of apomorphine (50–200μg) into the lateral cerebral ventricle or apomorphine (2–10μg) into the caudate-putamen complex decreased pain sensitivity (as shown by an increase in the latency to hind-paw lick in the hot plate test). Furthermore, the decreased pain sensitivity after the central administration of apomorphine was antagonized by pretreatment with haloperidol (a dopamine antagonist). On the other hand, lowering dopamine content in corpus striatum with electrolytic destruction of substantia nigra and 6-hydroxydopamine lesions to the substantia nigra, as well as direct injection of haloperidol into the lateral cerebral ventricle or caudate-putamen complex increased pain sensitivity. The data indicate that activation of striatal dopamine receptors in rat brain induces pain inhibition.

Notes: Abstract In order to evaluate the forensic applicability of the STR locus D20S161 and construct a preliminary database, the genotype distributions and allele frequencies in five populations from three main ethnic groups were investigated, including Germans, Slovakians, African Americans, Japanese and Chinese. A total of 512 samples from unrelated individuals and 85 confirmed father/mother/¶child triplets were analyzed by PCR and allele determination was carried out by comparison with a sequenced human allelic ladder. The results showed that D20S161 typing was both precise and reliable. A total of 7 alleles was found in these populations and no evidence of deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed. Pairwise comparisons between populations showed that there were significant differences in the distributions of the allele frequencies among the three main ethnic groups. No mutation events were observed from the confirmed father/mother/¶child triplets. With a maximum likelihood method, the mutation rate was indirectly estimated as 2.5 × 10–5. These results suggest that D20S161 is a useful marker for forensic casework and paternity analysis.
