Notes: An expression is derived for the spin-wave stiffness constant D in a ferromagnetic metallic alloy. The formalism is based on a multiorbital tight-binding model and the Hartree–Fock approximation. Both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder are taken into account. Results for Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, and Ni-Cu alloys are obtained within the coherent potential approximation (CPA) and compared with previous calculations and experimental data.

Notes: A new transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which can be expressed as Ga3−xIn5+xSn2O16; 0.2≤x≤1.6, has been identified. The equilibrium phase relationships of this new material with respect to three other TCOs in Ga2O3–In2O3–SnO2 are reported. The optical properties of this phase are slightly superior to Sn-doped indium oxide (ITO) and depend on composition. A room-temperature conductivity of 375 Ω cm−1 was obtained for H2-reduced Ga2.4In5.6Sn2O16. This value is an order of magnitude lower than commercial ITO films, but comparable to values reported for bulk, polycrystalline Sn-doped In2O3. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Flow fields within spatially periodic arrays of cylinders arranged in square and hexagonal lattices are calculated, with microscale Reynolds number ranging between zero and 200, employing a finite element numerical scheme. The terminology of an "apparent permeability'' is introduced to establish a relationship existing between mean velocity and macroscopic pressure gradient characterized by a finite Reynolds number flow. In contrast with the low Reynolds number "true '' permeability, the apparent permeability is shown here to generally depend upon the direction of the applied pressure gradient, owing to nonlinearities existing within the local fluid motion. The orientation-dependent permeabilities of both square and hexagonal monodisperse arrays are observed to diminish with increasing Reynolds number. Similar behavior is also observed for a bidisperse square array, though the apparent permeability of the latter is shown less sensitive to Darcy velocity orientation at large Reynolds numbers in comparison to the corresponding monodisperse square array, for all cylinder concentrations examined.

Notes: Ion-beam mixing of tin on iron provides corrosion protection against high-temperature oxidation. Previous studies have been inconclusive as to the exact composition and distribution of alloys produced at the Fe/Sn interface. This study provides a detailed diagram of Fe-Sn specimens after ion-beam mixing with Ar+ at 40 keV and a dose of 5×1016 ions/cm2 . The interface was isotopically labeled with 7.5 nm of 57 Fe and 119 Sn so that dual perspective conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy could be performed. Analyses in this manner allowed comparison of 119 Sn conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) and 57 Fe CEMS spectra to accurately assign spectral components which could not be conclusively assigned using a single CEMS perspective. Information from Rutherford backscattering spectrometry confirmed the layered nature of specimens prior to implantation and was used for depth determination of the mixed region after implantation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy also provided information after implantation. Data indicate the formation of a uniform amorphous surface during implantation resulting in a heterogeneous mixture of components consisting mainly of dilute tin in iron (approximately 8-at. % Sn) and FeSnx (x≈1). About 80% of the 37.5-nm tin overlayer was removed by sputtering. The components identified are somewhat more iron rich than previous assignments and illustrate the difference in surface structures resulting from various implantation parameters.

Notes: The crystal structure of despentapeptide insulin, a monomeric insulin, has been refined at 1.3 Å spacing and subsequently used to predict and model the organization in the insulin fibril. The model makes use of the contacts in the densely packed despentapeptide insulin crystal, and takes into account other experimental evidence, including binding studies with Congo red. The dimensions of this model fibril correspond well with those measured experimentally, and the monomer-monomer contacts within the fibril are in accordance with the known physical chemistry of insulin fibrils. Using this model, it may be possible to predict mutations in insulin that might alleviate problems associated with fibril formation during insulin therapy. © 1997 Wiley-Liss Inc.

Notes: Thomas and Windle's model of Case II transport is analyzed for a semiinfinite medium by a singular perturbation technique. Two adjacent boundary layers separate equilibrated and dry regions. A thin boundary layer of width ∼ O(M-1/2/ln M), where M (≫1) dictates how rapidly the mixture's viscosity decays with liquid concentration, sits next to the equilibrated outer left region. Here, quasi-steady diffusion balances relaxation. A thicker intermediate layer of width ∼ O(M-1/2) separates the lefthand boundary layer and the dry outer region on the right, where both relaxation and unsteady diffusion participate in the transport. Matching the solutions at leading order specifies the moving front's speed, v: v ∼ M1/2. The analysis indicates that relaxation significantly affects the nearly dry region just ahead of the moving front. This disagrees with the widely accepted view that ordinary diffusion dominates in the nearly dry righthand region. Approximating that ordinary diffusion dominates in this region leads to a stepexponential concentration profile at the front and a simple analytical solution for the front speed, v with the correct M scaling. This approximate result accurately predicts the values of v determined by direct numerical solutions.

Notes: An analytical and experimental study was made of the evaporation from pure and saline water films flowing down a heated vertical surface at Reynolds numbers between 160 and 600. Visual observation showed free surface evaporation. Film continuity was poor for pure water, but good for saline water, because of the influence of temperature and salinity on surface tension gradients. Evaporation rates were predicted by (1) a constant-property boundary-layer type of laminar analysis; (2) the constant-property Dukler “eddy” treatment; and (3) a variable property laminar analysis that took into account the boiling point elevation due to salinity. The experimental evaporation rates could be correlated by dimensionless moduli arising out of the laminar analyses, but best quantitative agreement was found with the Dukler eddy treatment.

Notes: Linear perturbation analyses are extended to determine the lowest Rayleigh number at which convection initiates in a vertical cylinder heated on the bottom and cooled on the top. The critical Rayleigh number for the first mode of convection in a right circular cylinder with a perfectly conducting wall is shown to be three times larger than that in such a cell with a perfectly adiabatic side wall. An adjusted wave number is shown to make the results of Pellew and Southwell applicable to the adiabatic wall in a manner similar to that used by Pnueli and Ostrach for the perfectly conducting side wall. The results are compared with experiment and are in very good agreement.
