Abstract: Two siblings with congenital sensory neuropathy are discussed whose inheritance appears to be autosomal recessive, an unusual pattern for this disorder. Low cerebrospinal fluid protein was demonstrated in both children early in life, and at present one continues to have low cerebrospinal fluid total protein, while the other has an unusual spinal fluid electrophoretic pattern with very low albumin concentration. Both children suffered from chronic, unexplained diarrhea in their early years. The children's problems are reviewed, and the importance of classifying the various sensory disorders is stressed.

Abstract: A 5-year-old boy is presented who, in association with a severe streptococcal wound infection, developed evidence of widespread tissue insult. Symptoms included prolonged delirium, confusion, and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Biochemical abnormalities included elevated BUN, LDH, SGOT, CPK, and amylase. Urinary sediment was found to be markedly abnormal. Symptoms and laboratory measurements improved slowly on therapy. Reports of clinical material with some common features are reviewed as well as autopsy findings in fatal streptococcal infections. Also mentioned is a summary of the biochemical and pathologic effects of streptococcal exotoxins in animals. It is hypothesized that streptococcal extracellular products may be responsible for many of the symptoms and biochemical alterations occurring with streptococcal infections.

Abstract: Diastematomyelia is an uncommon congenital malformation of the neural axis manifested by separation of the lateral halves of the spinal cord. A case is presented in which the complaint was increasing curvature of the spine. Preoperative diagnosis of this lesion was established by roentgenography. The condition is a serious congenital abnormality which is susceptible to treatment and, therefore, early diagnosis is of practical importance.

Abstract: The literature search performed by Wall and his associates in conjunction with their study1 failed to identify a randomized intervention trial carried out by our group several years ago, aimed at reducing infant exposure to environmental tobacco smoke(ETS).2 In common with Wall's study, our trial was carried out in primary care offices and used a low-impact intervention strategy. Our study was different, however, in that the infants' interpreted urine cotinine measurements were incorporated into the intervention and were also used to assess ETS exposure in the cases and controls.
