Abstract: In laser proton acceleration, the inevitable transverse divergence of proton beam restricts its applications in many fields. In this paper, a structured target with a properly wide channel attached to the backside of a foil is proposed, and the interaction of the ultra-short laser pulse with the structured channel target is investigated via two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The simulations show that for the structured channel target, electrons on the front surface are heated by the incident high-intensity laser pulse and then the induced hot electrons transport through the target to the rear surface, building an electrostatic field in the longitudinal direction to accelerate the protons to high energies as the typical target normal sheath acceleration scheme. In the case of the structured channel target, the simulation results indicate that a strong transverse electrostatic field is created by charge separation along the inner surface of the channel while hot electrons propagate along the channel side walls under the guidance of self-induced magnetic and electric fields, which can focus the emitted proton beam transversely, leading to a smaller divergence. By comparing the channel target case with the traditional foil target case under the same conditions, it is found that the divergence angle of the proton beam from the channel target is reduced significantly. Protons with energies above 3 MeV have a divergence angle of 5.3° at the time of 500 fs in the channel target case, while the value is 17.1° in the foil case for a laser intensity of 5.4×1019 W/cm2. Additionally, the effect of the channel target on the maximum proton energy is considered. The simulation results of the energy spectra reveal that the maximum proton cut-off energy of the channel target is about 1 MeV lower than that of the foil target. This small energy loss is due to the refluxing of the cold electrons on the channel walls, which suppresses the increasing of the sheath potential. Therefore, it is concluded that the focusing electric field can work on the proton beam effectively, leading to a better collimation with conserving the proton energy by using the proposed channel target. Especially when the inner diameter of the channel target is comparable to the laser focal spot size, the proton beam can be confined to a small divergence, and a relatively higher laser energy conversion efficiency can be ensured as well.

Abstract: China Academy of Engineering Physics terahertz free electron laser (CAEP THz FEL,CTFEL) is the first THz FEL oscillator in China, which is jointly built by CAEP,Peking University and Tsinghua University. It is designed as a high-repetition-rate and high-duty-cycle linac-based FEL facility. This THz FEL mainly consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) photocathode high-voltage direct current (DC) gun,a superconducting radio frequency (RF) linac,a planar undulator, and a quasi-concentric optical resonator. The DC gun provides a high-brightness electron beam with the bunch charge of about 100 pC and the repetition rate of 54.167~MHz.The normalized emittance of the electron beam is less than 10m,and the energy spread is less than 0.75%.A 24-cell superconducting RF accelerator provides an effective field gradient of about 10 MV/m and energizes the electron beam to 6-8~MeV.The beam then goes through the undulator and generates the spontaneous radiation, which is reflected back and forth in the optical resonator and then stimulated by the electron beam. The first stimulated saturation of CTFEL in the macro-pulse mode was obtained in August,2017.In this paper, the THz spectrum is measured by a Fourier spectrometer (Bruker VERTEX 80 V).The macro-pulse energy is measured by an absolute energy meter from Thomas Keating Instruments. The longitudinal beam length is preliminarily calculated by the auto-correlation curve from the time-domain signal of the spectrometer. The macro-pulse duration is captured by a GeGa cryogenic detector from QMC Instrument. The measurement results indicate that the terahertz laser frequency is continuously adjustable from 2 THz to 3 THz.The macro-pulse average power is more than 10 W and the micro-pulse power is more than 0.3 MW.The single-pass gain is larger than 2.5%. This facility is now working in macro-pulse mode in the first step, also called step one.The minimum macro-pulse duration is about 50s and the maximum is about 2 ms.The macro-pulse repetition is 1 Hz or 5 Hz.The typical pulse duration and repetition rate are 1 ms and 1 Hz,respectively. In the middle of 2018,the duty cycle will upgrade to more than 10% as step two.And the continuous wave (CW) operation will be obtained in step three by the end of 2018.The spectrum adjustment range will also be expanded to cover from 1 THz to 4 THz by then. Some application experiments have been carried out on the platform of CTFEL.This facility will greatly promote the development of THz science and its applications in material science, chemistry science, biomedicine science and many other cutting-edge areas in general.

Abstract: In this paper we firstly use a new method——numerical differentiation, which was developed in recent years to calculate gray gradient, and then realize the inverse cloud motion wind by regularization. At last, through simulation and practical experiments, we compared the wind inverse results between the algorithms with or without gray gradient information when the cloud images include perturbation. The experimental results show that the new algorithm with gradient information can reduce the influence of image disturbance effectively, and also increase the precision of cloud motion winds. We are in a position to find a new way to cloud motion wind inversion.

Abstract: By introducing the concept of information content and using Bayesian estimation theory, a scheme for calculating information contents in temperature, humidity, O3, SO2, CH4 and other atmospheric parameters in the remote sensing data is given. The scheme takes into account the channel sensitivity to the atmospheric parameters, the observation error of each channel as well as the error characteristics of the background atmosphere. The temperature and humidity information contents in the observation of HIRS, AMSU, AIRS, IAIS and three combinations of the instruments are calculated using the scheme. The results show that the scheme may have valuable applications in instrument designing, evaluating and comparing different instruments and usage of remote sensing data etc.
