Abstract: Liturgical choral song as a form of ecclesiastical proclamation: A fundamental reflection from a hermeneutical-homiletical perspective Certain reformed churches have, traditionally, disapproved of choral singing. This has been due either to one-sided or inconsistent theological arguments, or to overreaction to bad choral singing. This article strives to show that, in principle, there is no difference between the kerugma of preaching and that of a choral work, and that liturgical choral singing can be regarded as a form of church proclamatioru Proclamation is examined from a hermeneutical-homiletical point of view, in order to show that there are no fundamental differences between the ‘hearing’ of a choral work and listening to an ‘ordinary’ spoken sermon.

Abstract: This aticle reflects on the ecclesial position of the diakonia within the Hervormde Kerk in Suidelike Arika. The body-of-Chist model is postulated as the basis for a pracical theological theory. Koinonia is depicted as a linchpin for Christian caring and sharing towards which, if made aware of its role in poverty alleviation, it would make a meaningful contribuion. Ways and means of raising awareness are discussed, ater which relevant resources for practical service provision are identified and discussed. The establishment of small groups and the engagement  of women and youth groups are cited as enabling actions in respect of the meaningful provision of benevolent and development services. It is then suggested that the church start, register and run development projects in co-operaion with the welfare department, business, development agencies and ecumenicalriends.

Abstract: The importance of visits to newcomers as part of the work programme of the parish minister In the current theological literature about parish-visiting, a gap is identified with regard to the importance of visiting newcomers in a congregation. With this in mind an empirical study was undertaken to evaluate the matter in actual practice. The starting point (hypothesis) of this study is: Visits to newcomers is a very important facet of any parish minister's work.  Such visits can help to establish a pastoral relationship between minister and member which is essential for the minister's pastoral and other work in the congregation. By means of an empirical study the above-mentioned hypothesis was tested and a preliminary theory with regard to the importance of visitation to newcomers was formulated. After  this theory has been tested against the directives of Scripture, a proposal is made for a new theory to underpin the practice within the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika.

Abstract: Political and social issues in preaching This paper is an attempt to provide guidelines for preaching with regard to the socio-political aspects of society. The dangers of political preaching as an enigma of contemporary preaching are analysed. Preaching is a complicated process relating to hermeneutics and communication. Obstacles in disturbing this process are pinpointed in the study. The paper's aim is to find ways to overcome the disturbance of the normal hermeneutical process, especially where political aspects are concerned.

Abstract: The problem of preaching in terms of a 'canon' within the canon New evidence in scientific research, attempts to prove that Holy Scripture no longer maintain its unqualified position as an authoritive canon. The authority and relevancy of certain books and passages are questioned. There are significant signs that a 'canon' within the canon is already functioning in the preaching of the church. How does this mere fact of a 'canon' within the canon, affects and influences the preaching of today? The paper is an attempt to define the problem and to provide guidelines in handling this contemporary question.

Abstract: Meta-theories, base-theories and theories of practice in Pratical Theology The problem of meta-theories and base-theories, their interaction and the influence of each on the scientific process, have widely been debated in practical theology. In South Africa two meta-theories namely the system- theory together with the theory that social science is busy with the study of actions, are having the greater deal of attention. The purpose of this article is to point out the fact that an early and absolute choice of particular meta-theories, restricts the work of practical theology because it will influence your base-theories, and can weaken the theological content of practical theology. An attempt is made to offer a model by which the interaction between, meta-theories, base-theories and theories of practice can he understood and which can also help the theologian, busy with practical theology, to steer clear of problems and understand the meta- influences in his own scientific work.

Abstract: Preaching and culture. This paper is an attempt to define the relation between culture and preaching. The Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika frequently refers to the church as a 'peoples church' ('volkskerk'). Owing to political changes in South Africa, the qualification 'volkskerk', has created a certain amount of disturbance in the ranks of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk. This study analyses the relation between culture and preaching from different hermeneutical perspectives, namely: the cultural embedding of the biblical kerygma; the interwoveness of language and culture, and the necessity of contextuality in preaching.

Abstract: An introductory study to identify and classify theories of learning with regard to the task of preaching Learning is a lifelong process in which man must be what he can be, namely a being interacting with his world in a creative problem-solving manner for the well-being of himself and others. In a similar sense the church has always seen her task in preaching, supported by all the other domains of churchlife, as that of teaching people to come to terms with the gospel of Jesus Christ in their daily existence. This article proposes to identify, categorize and integrate the acknowledged theories underlying the learning process, as they exist in the social sciences, into an allencompassing model for learning; a model from which conclusions are drawn in the hope that further studies can spell out the implications of these conclusions as they are applicable to the task of preaching within the church.
