Abstract: This paper studies the existence and decay estimates of weak solutions to the surface growth equation. First, the global existence of weak solutions is obtained by the approximation method introduced by Majda and Bertozzi [Vorticity and Incompressible Flow (Cambridge University Press, 2001)]. Then, we derive the L2-decay rates of weak solutions via the Fourier splitting method under the assumption that u0∈L1(R)∩L2(R). For more general cases, i.e., u0∈L2(R), the behavior of weak solutions in L2 is obtained by the spectral theory of self-adjoint operators.

Abstract: Based on first-principles band-structure calculations, we predict that FM MnHg2Te3 is a Weyl semimetal candidate. When the direction of spin polarization is toward the c-axis, there are six Weyl points in the whole Brillouin zone. With spin orientation along the a-axis, there exist eight Weyl points. For AFM MnHg2Te3, when the spin direction is along the c-axis, the band structure is fully gapped. The calculation of the Z2 number confirms that AFM-c MnHg2Te3 is a 3D AFM topological insulator. Adjusting the spin direction from the c-axis to the a-axis only changes the bandgap without affecting the topological properties of this system. The gapless surface-state on the (100) surface is also obtained, the results of which correspond with the properties of the AFM topological insulator.

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been widely used as a label-free biophysical technique to quantitatively study biochemical processes. For the SPR data fitting using a single exponential function, the procedure to extract the rate constants is straightforward. However, there is no simple procedure for SPR data fitting with double exponential functions. A highly non-linear fitting procedure is, therefore, used to fit the biphasic SPR data with numerical solutions of the rate equations. This procedure requires some prior knowledge of the underlying interaction mechanism, and the extracted rate constants often have large uncertainties. In this report, we propose a new method of analyzing the biphasic SPR data using the three commonly employed biphasic models. Our method is based on a general analytical solution of the biphasic rate equations, which is much more transparent and straightforward than the highly non-linear numerical integration approach. Our method can be used to determine the underlying biphasic interaction mechanism from the analysis of the SPR data and to extract the rate constants with high confidence levels. We have illustrated the procedures with examples of the data analysis on simulated SPR profiles, and the results are discussed.

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a widely used, affinity based, label-free biophysical technique to investigate biomolecular interactions. The extraction of rate constants requires accurate identification of the particular binding model. The bivalent analyte model involves coupled non-linear differential equations. No clear procedure to identify the bivalent analyte mechanism has been established. In this report, we propose a unique signature for the bivalent analyte model. This signature can be used to distinguish the bivalent analyte model from other biphasic models. The proposed method is demonstrated using experimentally measured SPR sensorgrams.

Abstract: The authors report on a study of dipole flip-flop “local” transition in ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride [P(VDF)] chains, using total energy calculation based on the density functional theory. The calculated results indicate that a simple flipping of a single electric dipole moment is energetically allowed. Furthermore, such a flipping involves no change either in bond length, bond angle, or the orientation of the chain. The calculations also show that on a thin film of ordered chains, strong dipole interactions existing in P(VDF) could cause modulation of the dipole orientation thus forming superlattices on P(VDF) films. These results are in good agreement with recent scanning tunnel microscope experimental measurements. Furthermore, our calculations show that partial flipping may also exist and extend over a length of several monomers during the flip-flop transition.

Abstract: Composite pulse quadrupole echo sequences significantly reduce distortions due to finite pulse-width effects, but they also produce phase dispersion leading to distortions of the quadrupolar powder line shape. In order to correct for phase errors arising from the composite pulse, we present the composite pulse magic echo sequence. It is demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically that the composite pulse magic echo sequence can eliminate phase distortions without considerably attenuating the signal-to-noise ratio. The performance of the new sequence is quite good.

Abstract: In this paper, the piezoelectric properties of laminated films made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene (FEP) copolymer by an improved process and charged by a corona method are investigated by measurements of the pressure dependence of the piezoelectric d33 coefficents, the isothermal decay of d33 at various temperatures, and thermally stimulated discharge current spectra. The results show that the structure of the laminated films is mechanically stable. The quasistatic piezoelectric d33 coefficents can reach 400pC∕N and they are relatively independent of the static pressure in the range up to 16kPa. The decay of the d33 coefficients is primarily due to charge detrapping. Compared to polypropylene ferroelectrets, the thermal stability of the piezoelectric activity in such laminated films at 90°C is improved by a factor of 2 with respect to the percentage of the d33 values remaining. The dominant drift path of the detrapped charges at temperatures of about 130°C is most likely along the surface of the PTFE fibers, while charge drift through the solid layer of FEP is possibly prevailing at temperatures of around 210°C.

Abstract: The present study experimentally and numerically investigates the feasibility of applying multiple dielectric barrier discharge (multi-DBD) plasma actuators to reduce wind loads and modify local flow field on the roofs of low-rise buildings. Four arrangements of multi-DBD plasma actuators are placed on the roofs and induce four directions of wall jets. The results show that mean and peak negative pressure coefficients are negative no matter the plasma actuation is on or off. These wall jets decrease the absolute values of these pressure coefficients in different roof regions and succeed in modifying the local flow around the roof. The wall jet blowing from the trailing edge to the leading edge has the best effect on wind loads, since the absolute values of mean and peak negative pressure coefficients are respectively reduced by about 20% and 12% near the leading edge. The different variations of wind loads and the local flow for all arrangements are due to the compact of the directionality of the wall jets. The wall jet produces a strong suction region at the beginning of the wall jet, which leads to an obvious enhancement of wind loads in this region. Meanwhile, the wall jet induces a strong pressure region at the back of the wall jet, resulting in an apparent decline of wind loads.

Abstract: We propose to use a femtosecond direct laser writing technique to realize dielectric optical elements from photo-resist materials for the generation of structured light from purely geometrical phase transformations. This is illustrated by the fabrication and characterization of spin-to-orbital optical angular momentum couplers generating optical vortices of topological charge from 1 to 20. In addition, the technique is scalable and allows obtaining microscopic to macroscopic flat optics. These results thus demonstrate that direct 3D photopolymerization technology qualifies for the realization of spin-controlled geometric phase optical elements.
