    Abstract: Superstructure reflections of lead magnesium niobate (PMN), Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3, were measured with synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction. Our data conclusively demonstrate that the (h+12,k+12,l+12)-type reflections are the result of chemical ordering between the Mg and Nb ions in domains of 50 Å. Structure factor analysis of these peaks reveals an oxygen displacement within the ordered regions of 0.044(3) Å along a 〈100〉 direction towards the Nb ion. Single crystals of La-doped PMN (La–PMN) exhibit much larger chemically ordered regions (up to 900 Å for 10% La–PMN). Structural analysis of the La–PMN suggests that as the ordered region increases in size, the ordering changes from complete Nb:Mg ordering and approaches Nb:(Mg2/3Nb1/3) ordering. Although anticipated from electrostatic energy arguments, our conclusions are based on a clear trend in the bond length of the mixed site as a function of La doping.

    Abstract: The piezoelectric properties of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric thin layers were investigated by interferometry as a function of frequency and dc electric bias. Materials included: a ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) with a Zr/Ti ratio of 53/47; a relaxor ferroelectric La-modified PZT with a Zr/Ti ratio of 70/30 and a La content of 7.8 at. %; and antiferroelectric lead zirconate. The hysteretic behavior of the piezoelectric coefficient due to polarization reversal was also studied. The layers were prepared by a sol-gel method, and were found to have properties similar to bulk ceramics. Significant strain levels could be achieved in the materials due to the relatively high electric strengths supported in thin-layer form. Polarization was found to be completely switchable between forward and reverse directions; however, the strain levels generated by switching were found to be inequivalent. In addition, pronounced piezoelectric relaxations and strong piezoelectric losses were observed.

    Abstract: Piezoelectric films of Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) were deposited by pulsed laser deposition onto metallic magnetostrictive substrates. In order to optimize the growth of PZT films, a buffer layer of Pt was employed, as well as variation of deposition temperature, pressure, and laser energy. Room temperature θ-2θ x-ray diffraction measurements indicate all diffraction features correspond to reflections indexed to a single PZT phase of space group P4mm. Scanning electron microscopy images reveal pinhole-free dense films of pyramidal shaped crystal arrangements whose orientation and size were controlled by variation of oxygen pressures during deposition. The resulting PZT films had a value of d33 ∼ 46 pm/V representing a 53% increase over previous efforts to realize a piezoelectric/Metglas™ film heterostructure.

    Abstract: An ultralow equivalent magnetic noise of 6.2 pT/√Hz at 1 Hz was obtained in a bimorph heterostructure sensor unit consisting of longitudinal-magnetized Metglas layers and a transverse-poled 1 mol. % Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) single crystal. Furthermore, the equivalent magnetic noise was ≤1 pT/√Hz at 10 Hz. Compared with previously reported multi-push-pull configuration Metglas/PMN-PT sensor units, the current heterostructure exhibits a higher magnetoelectric coefficient of 61.5 V/(cm × Oe), a similar equivalent magnetic noise at 1 Hz and a lower noise floor at several hertz range. The ultralow equivalent magnetic noise in this sensor unit is due to the low tangent loss and ultrahigh piezoelectric properties of Mn-doped PMN-PT single crystals.

    Abstract: Raman scattering, pyroelectric current, and dielectric susceptibility measurements have been carried out on a series of tetragonal and rhombohedral-structured Pb1−xLax(ZryTi1−y)1−x/4O3 (PLZT) ceramics, under zero-field heating after zero-field cooling (ZFH/ZFC) and zero-field heating after field-cooling (ZFH/FC) conditions. The results have been shown to be in good agreement with previous transmission electron microscopy observations. A dependence of the Raman spectra on light polarization (i.e., Raman selection rules or RSR), which are known to be a characteristic property of single crystals, has been observed in the PLZT compositions 9/65/35, 12/65/35, 6/40/60, and 12/40/60 illuminated with a 2 μm wide laser spot (i.e., micro-Raman). The texture which has been observed by x-ray diffraction on 6/40/60 is discussed in conjunction with the Raman results. The combined data of Raman scattering experiments and electrical measurements, together with electromechanical and ferroelectric properties, are explained in terms of competing random fields. Furthermore, the disappearance of RSR in the ZFH/FC conditions for the ferroelectric relaxor PLZT 9/65/35 has given evidence for the existence of domains and grain boundaries in the field cooled conditions. Similar Raman spectra were found for the ferroelectric PLZT composition 5/65/35 in zero-field conditions. The occurrence of RSR in PLZT x/65/35 for x & gt;8 (i.e., for only relaxor states with average cubic symmetry) are interpreted as resulting from second-order scattering effects. This supports a model of a cluster glass with short-range-ordered polar clusters rather than a multidomain state (i.e., a multitude of small ferroelectric domains) in these relaxor systems.

    Abstract: Large low-frequency polarization noise is found in some perovskite relaxor ferroelectrics when they are partially polarized, regardless of whether the polarization is accompanied by an applied electric field. The noise appears both in the ferroelectric and relaxor states, including the nominally ergodic paraelectric state at temperatures above the susceptibility peak. Since it is present whenever the samples have non-zero average piezoelectric coefficients, but not otherwise evident, it appears to be a response to mechanical strain changes. Dependence of the noise on sample thermal history indicates that non-equilibrium strain relaxation is the source, even in the temperature range for which the sample is nominally ergodic. Non-equilibrium noise in the absence of net piezoelectricity is found at somewhat higher frequencies. Related materials lacking a metastable non-equilibrium cubic bulk phase and a symmetry-broken surface layer show very little of the anomalous low-frequency noise. The implications for a non-equilibrium origin of the skin effect are discussed.

    Abstract: The two-step freezing and melting of the field-induced ferroelectric order in PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) and (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3)0.88(PbTiO3)0.12 (PMN-PT) is investigated. In PMN-PT, direct microscopic images show that both steps occur in the same spatial regions. The higher temperature freezing corresponds to the higher temperature melting, indicating that the stages are not just kinetically but also thermodynamically distinct. The higher-T melting step shows several indications of being a sharp first-order transition near an equilibrium temperature. The lower-T melting step shows more kinetic dependence. Partially poled PMN also spontaneously approaches saturation polarization on zero-field aging, indicating that the true equilibrium state is ferroelectric below ∼200 K. In PMN-PT, a variety of kinetic measurements on the ferroelectric state indicate that the kinetics are governed by a glassy matrix showing aging effects.

    Abstract: A magnetoelectric (ME) laminate heterostructure consisting of two shear-mode piezoelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-30PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) single crystal layers, a longitudinally magnetized magnetostrictive Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.92 alloy plate, and a mechanical clamping brass substrate has been demonstrated that has a notably superior ME effect relative to previous laminate configurations of these two materials. A giant ME coefficient of 7.5 V/(cm Oe) at low frequencies under an optimal dc magnetic bias of ∼400 Oe was found. The superior ME effects originate from the nature of heterostructure design, which allows the PMN-PT single crystals to operate in a shear mode that has maximum electro-mechanical coupling (i.e., d15 = 6800 pC/N).

    Abstract: The domain structure of furnace-cooled (FC) and post-annealed (PA) Fe–xat.% Ga (x=12, 20, and 25) crystals has been investigated by magnetic force microscopy. For both FC and PA Fe–12at.% Ga, the domains were found to be well-aligned and oriented along the [100] direction. For Fe–20at.% Ga, although a preferred [100] orientation remained, a difference in morphology was found between FC and PA conditions—in the PA condition, clear dendritic domains were observed. For both FC and PA Fe–25at.% Ga, a much reduced [100] preferred domain orientation was found, the domain size was notably reduced, and dendrite formation was not observed.
