    Abstract: Transient absorption anisotropies of the Zn(II)porphyrin monomer, its direct meso–meso coupled dimer, and trimer are measured in the B (Soret) band region by sub-30 fs laser pulses. It is shown that detailed information on the electronic structures and energy transfer dynamics can be obtained from the anisotropy and the magic angle data. The anisotropies of all three molecules exhibit remarkable behaviors in the first 200 fs region. Experimental observations can be accounted for adequately by treating the transient absorption signal as an explicit sum of ground state bleach and excited state stimulated emission contributions. In the monomer, the anisotropy decay denotes an oscillatory feature followed by a 100 fs time constant exponential decay. It is argued that the Bx and By transitions of the porphyrin monomer are nondegenerate with an energy splitting of ∼170 cm−1. Furthermore, equilibration of the excitation energy within the B states is slightly underdamped. Excitation of the monomerlike B band of the dimer (trimer) leads to ultrafast ∼30 fs (60 fs) anisotropy decay and a subsequent rise with ∼60 fs (70 fs) time constant. It is concluded that the anisotropy decay is due to the ultrafast energy transfer to the low-energy exciton split B band, while the rise is due to the redshift of the excited state stimulated emission spectrum thereby decreasing the contribution of the excited state stimulated emission component in the overall transient absorption signal.

    Abstract: We describe a sensitive method for measuring time-dependent changes in refractive index within ∼5 μm of an interface using off-null time-resolved ellipsometry and a dual-cavity femtosecond laser. The sensitivity to changes in refractive index is two orders of magnitude higher than conventional picosecond interferometry. A thin metal film on a sapphire substrate is heated by ∼10 K using an ultrafast optical pump pulse; the subsequent changes of the phase difference δΔ between p̂ and ŝ polarized reflectivity are tracked using off-null ellipsometry using a time-delayed probe pulse. We demonstrate a sensitivity of δΔ≈3×10−7 deg/√Hz using interfaces between Au and water, and Au and various gases including R134a, a common refrigerant. Our data for the damping rate of ≈200 MHz frequency acoustic waves in O2, N2, and Ar at atmospheric pressure agree well with prior results obtained at much lower pressures and frequencies.

    Abstract: Noncontact thermometry with micron-scale lateral spatial resolution and fast time resolution is shown to be enabled by measuring the temperature dependence of two-photon absorption (TPA) on crystalline semiconductors. In the proof-of-concept experiments reported here, for studies of Si, an Er:fiber laser at λ=1.56 μm is split into pump and probe beams; where they overlap, the large TPA signal changes strongly with temperature because the two-photon energy lies between the indirect and direct bandgaps of Si. We show that the TPA coefficient increases by a factor of 2 when the temperature increases from 30 to 300 °C. For studies of GaP, we use instead a Ti:sapphire laser at 790 nm to achieve two-photon excitation above the direct bandgap. In GaP, contributions to the TPA from the dominant direct transition show less temperature dependence than for Si but the additional contribution of the indirect transition gives a similar magnitude as the temperature dependence of TPA on Si. In the current implementation using Si, the spatial resolution of the thermometry is 6×6×50 μm3 and the sensitivity is 0.6 K in a 1 kHz bandwidth.

    Abstract: Time evolution of the coherence properties of excitons in J-aggregates of an organic molecule is studied by femtosecond transient absorption and three-pulse stimulated photon echo peak shifts. The exciton energy correlation function decays to zero by 120 fs single exponential, manifesting an ultrafast rupture of the coherent wave packet motion and the absence of inhomogeneity beyond the 100 fs time scale. Insensitivity of the correlation function to the isotopic substitution of the solvent suggests that the phonon modes of the molecular chain are responsible for the ultrafast dynamics.

    Abstract: The demonstration of a harmonic lasing self-seeded free-electron laser (HLSS FEL) scheme in the soft X-ray range at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free Electron Laser is presented. We report the experimental results of HLSS FEL radiation with the shortest wavelength of 1 nm by using the optimized phase shift of 2/3π. The key feature of the HLSS scheme is that the mode number is decreased (the longitudinal coherence length is enhanced) which is directly observed using a single-shot spectrometer. The spectral brightness is enhanced by a factor of 1.7 compared to the self-amplified spontaneous emission FEL because of the narrowed bandwidth. Our results show a good agreement with the theoretical expectation and simulations. The HLSS mode is a promising standard operation mode to generate a stable and high-brightness X-ray FEL that will provide more benefits to users for various applications.

    Abstract: Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to investigate the energy level alignment and growth morphology of pentacene (Pn) films deposited on a PMMA derivative-based dielectric surface with and without ultraviolet/ozone treatment. The treated surface exhibited higher offset values for the highest occupied molecular orbital levels between Pn and the polymer, which would result in higher threshold voltages for the device. However, aligned vacuum levels of the treated surface and the Pn at the interface were observed, suggesting that the dipole field would be reduced in the Pn film on the treated surface. The hydrophilic nature of the treated surface, observed by water contact angle measurement, allowed for a larger grain size of the Pn film, as confirmed by the AFM measurements, which will also favorably contribute to device mobility.

    Abstract: Lateral growth rate of GaAs is remarkably increased with supplying CBr4, which has been utilized as a p-type dopant source for carbon doped GaAs epilayers during metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth. The lateral growth rate can be represented as a linear function of the CBr4 flow rate, while the GaAs vertical growth rate is relatively insensitive to the CBr4 flow rate. The maximum ratio of the lateral to vertical growth rate by CBr4 is about 29. With increasing the growth temperature, the lateral growth rate increases, but it decreases at a more elevated growth temperature than 700 °C. These results are also compared to the previous results obtained by CCl4. In all cases the lateral growth rate increments by CBr4 are larger than those by CCl4.

    Abstract: We report the ferromagnetic doping of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using an electrochemical method. Ferromagnetism was well defined at the low temperature region and the Curie temperature was above 350 K. The coercive field increases monotonically with the increasing manganese concentration. Improved ferromagnetism with the increasing of manganese concentration and the control of hysteresis has been observed, and the electrical transport measurement of SWCNTs shows the normal semiconductor properties. These investigations indicate the great potential of SWCNTs in applications such as spin electronics.

    Abstract: We investigated a self-assembled Ag nanoparticle network electrode passivated by a nano-sized ZnO layer for use in high-performance transparent and flexible film heaters (TFFHs). The low temperature atomic layer deposition of a nano-sized ZnO layer effectively filled the uncovered area of Ag network and improved the current spreading in the self-assembled Ag network without a change in the sheet resistance and optical transmittance as well as mechanical flexibility. The time-temperature profiles and heat distribution analysis demonstrate that the performance of the TFTH with the ZnO/Ag network is superior to that of a TFFH with Ag nanowire electrodes. In addition, the TFTHs with ZnO/Ag network exhibited better stability than the TFFH with a bare Ag network due to the effective current spreading through the nano-sized ZnO layer.

    Abstract: The application of a Ga-liquid metal ion beam (Ga-LMIB) for surface modification is reported. Ga-LMIB treatment on the glass surface resulted in the implantation of Ga ions and the formation of sub-micrometer mounds. The glass surface hydrophobicity was also found to be enhanced as a result of the Ga-LMIB treatment; additionally, a photocatalytic activity that promoted organic dye decomposition was observed. Ga-LMIB application can be considered to be a new surface modification strategy for the construction of locally hydrophobic and photocatalytic surfaces.
