Abstract: We present our recent laser-plasmas instability (LPI) comparison experiment at the SGIII laser facility between the spherical and cylindrical hohlraums. Three kinds of filling are considered: vacuum, gas-filling with or without a capsule inside. A spherical hohlraum of 3.6 mm in diameter, and a cylindrical hohlraum of 2.4 mm × 4.3 mm are used. The capsule diameter is 0.96 mm. A flat-top laser pulse with 3 ns duration and up to 92.73 kJ energy is used. The experiment has shown that the LPI level in the spherical hohlraum is close to that of the outer beam in the cylindrical hohlraum, while much lower than that of the inner beam. The experiment is further simulated by using our 2-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic code LARED-Integration, and the laser back-scattering fraction and the stimulated Raman scatter (SRS) spectrum are post-processed by the high efficiency code of laser interaction with plasmas HLIP. According to the simulation, the plasma waves are strongly damped and the SRS is mainly developed at the plasma conditions of electron density from 0.08 nc to 0.1 nc and electron temperature from 1.5 keV to 2.0 keV inside the hohlraums. However, obvious differences between the simulation and experiment are found, such as that the SRS back-scattering is underestimated, and the numerical SRS spectrum peaks at a larger wavelength and at a later time than the data. These differences indicate that the development of a 3D radiation hydrodynamic code, with more accurate physics models, is mandatory for spherical hohlraum study.

Abstract: A recently proposed octahedral spherical hohlraum with six laser entrance holes (LEHs) is an attractive concept for an upgraded laser facility aiming at a predictable and reproducible fusion gain with a simple target design. However, with the laser energies available at present, LEH size can be a critical issue. Owing to the uncertainties in simulation results, the LEH size should be determined on the basis of experimental evidence. However, determination of LEH size of an ignition target at a small-scale laser facility poses difficulties. In this paper, we propose to use the prepulse of an ignition pulse to determine the LEH size for ignition-scale hohlraums via LEH closure behavior, and we present convincing evidence from multiple diagnostics at the SGIII facility with ignition-scale hohlraum, laser prepulse, and laser beam size. The LEH closure observed in our experiment is in agreement with data from the National Ignition Facility. The total LEH area of the octahedral hohlraum is found to be very close to that of a cylindrical hohlraum, thus successfully demonstrating the feasibility of the octahedral hohlraum in terms of laser energy, which is crucially important for sizing an ignition-scale octahedrally configured laser system. This work provides a novel way to determine the LEH size of an ignition target at a small-scale laser facility, and it can be applied to other hohlraum configurations for the indirect drive approach.

Abstract: The first laser–plasma interaction experiment using lasers of eight beams grouped into one octad has been conducted on the Shenguang Octopus facility. Although each beam intensity is below its individual threshold for stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS), collective behaviors are excited to enhance the octad SBS. In particular, when two-color/cone lasers with wavelength separation 0.3 nm are used, the backward SBS reflectivities show novel behavior in which beams of longer wavelength achieve higher SBS gain. This property of SBS can be attributed to the rotation of the wave vectors of common ion acoustic waves due to the competition of detunings between geometrical angle and wavelength separation. This mechanism is confirmed using massively parallel supercomputer simulations with the three-dimensional laser–plasma interaction code LAP3D.

Abstract: In this paper, we give a review of our theoretical and experimental progress in octahedral spherical hohlraum study. From our theoretical study, the octahedral spherical hohlraums with 6 Laser Entrance Holes (LEHs) of octahedral symmetry have robust high symmetry during the capsule implosion at hohlraum-to-capsule radius ratio larger than 3.7. In addition, the octahedral spherical hohlraums also have potential superiority on low backscattering without supplementary technology. We studied the laser arrangement and constraints of the octahedral spherical hohlraums, and gave a design on the laser arrangement for ignition octahedral hohlraums. As a result, the injection angle of laser beams of 50°–60° was proposed as the optimum candidate range for the octahedral spherical hohlraums. We proposed a novel octahedral spherical hohlraum with cylindrical LEHs and LEH shields, in order to increase the laser coupling efficiency and improve the capsule symmetry and to mitigate the influence of the wall blowoff on laser transport. We studied on the sensitivity of the octahedral spherical hohlraums to random errors and compared the sensitivity among the octahedral spherical hohlraums, the rugby hohlraums and the cylindrical hohlraums, and the results show that the octahedral spherical hohlraums are robust to these random errors while the cylindrical hohlraums are the most sensitive. Up till to now, we have carried out three experiments on the spherical hohlraum with 2 LEHs on Shenguang(SG) laser facilities, including demonstration of improving laser transport by using the cylindrical LEHs in the spherical hohlraums, spherical hohlraum energetics on the SGIII prototype laser facility, and comparisons of laser plasma instabilities between the spherical hohlraums and the cylindrical hohlraums on the SGIII laser facility.

Abstract: Manipulation of exchange bias (EB) via spin-current-induced spin–orbit torque (SOT) is of great importance in developing full electric control spintronic devices. Here, we report on SOT-dominant manipulation of the interfacial antiferromagnetic spins and the related perpendicular EB (PEB) in the IrMn/Co1-xTbx (CoTb) bilayers with various Tb contents. No matter the magnetization of the ferrimagnetic CoTb layer is Co-dominant or Tb-dominant; all the samples were perpendicularly magnetized, and spontaneous PEB could be established during the isothermal crystallization of the IrMn layer. The SOT-induced EB switching could be accomplished with assistance of an in-plane or out-of-plane external magnetic field, associated with a monotonic reduction of the EB switching fraction by increasing x. This phenomenon is attributed to weakening of the interfacial exchange coupling between the CoTb and IrMn layers as x is increased. These findings provide a way to design high energy-efficient spintronic devices by employing the antiferromagnet/ferrimagnet bilayers, which may have weak stray field and strong robustness in contrast to commonly used heavy-metal/ferromagnet/antiferromagnet trilayers.

Abstract: The novel octahedral spherical hohlraum can provide an ideal and practical approach for the next generation of laser systems to support both direct and indirect drive to achieve predictable and reproducible fusion gain via multiple schemes. To demonstrate its advantage in a naturally high symmetry at a cylindrically configured laser facility, it requires to repoint the laser beams to approach as close as possible the ideal octahedral beam configuration with an injection angle (the angle between a beam and the normal direction of its laser entrance hole (LEH)) ranging from 50° to 60°. We report our investigation and experiment on the optimum repointing scheme at the SGIII facility, which uses 32 beams, with 8 beams entering each polar LEH at 49.5° and 55°, and 4 beams entering each equatorial LEH at 61.5° and 62.1°. It contains residual imbalance between the polar and equatorial beams, leading to an asymmetry dominated by the spherical harmonic Y20 mode, which can be remarkably reduced by the stronger backscatters of equatorial beams. Our experiment demonstrated the feasibility of the 32-beam optimum repointing scheme and generation of 175 eV under 86 kJ inside a 2.4-mm-radius octahedral hohlraum with 0.7-mm-radius LEHs, which provided a strong support for the later experiment on proof-of-concept of octahedral spherical hohlraum [Lan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 245001 (2021)]. 2D simulations on LEH closure agree well with the observations. This work opens a novel way of realization of a quasi-spherical irradiation at a cylindrically configured laser facility without supplementary symmetry control.

Abstract: In order to investigate the atmospheric oxidation processes and the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), an indoor environmental reaction smog chamber are constructed and characterized. The system consists of the collapsible ∼830 L FEP Teflon film main reactor, in which the atmospheric chemical reactions take place and the formation of SOA occurs under the simulated atmospheric conditions, and the diverse on-line gas- and particle-phase instrumentation, such as the proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer, the synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometer, the aerosol laser time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and other traditional commercial instruments. The initial characterization experiments are described, concerning the temperature and ultraviolet light intensity, the reactivity of the pure air, the wall loss rates of gaseous compounds and particulate matter. And the initial evaluation experiments for SOA yields from the ozonolysis of α-pinene and for mass spectra of the products resulting from the photooxidation of OH initiated isoprene are also presented, which indicate the applicability of this facility on the studies of gas-phase chemical mechanisms as well as the formation of SOA expected in the atmosphere.

Abstract: The graphene-based photodetector with tunable p-p+-p junctions was fabricated through a simple laser irradiation process. Distinct photoresponse was observed at the graphene (G)-laser irradiated graphene (LIG) junction by scanning photocurrent measurements, and its magnitude can be modulated as a result of a positive correlation between the photocurrent and doping concentration in LIG region. Detailed investigation suggests that the photo-thermoelectric effect, instead of the photovoltaic effect, dominates the photocurrent generation at the G-LIG junctions. Such a simple and low-cost technique offers an alternative way for the fabrication of graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: The relations between configurations of a relativistic magnetron with diffraction output (MDO) and radiation patterns obtained by experimental investigations are presented in this paper. A fluorescent lamps array is used to snap microwave patterns radiated from an A6 type MDO. Experimental results are well in agreement with computer simulations. Conclusions obtained from experiments are that (1) when an MDO operates at 2π mode, with all cavities tapered onto the output port, the MDO can directly radiate TE01 mode. (2) TEn1 (n  & gt; 0, n is integer) modes can be radiated from a π mode operating MDO with 2n azimuthally symmetric cavities tapered onto the output port. (3) By inserting optimal transition sections into tapered cavities, a pure TE11 microwave can be obtained.

Abstract: Green phosphorescent inverted organic light-emitting devices (IOLEDs) with self or intentionally Ag-doped interlayer modified cathode were demonstrated. The IOLEDs show low driving voltage and high efficiency. For example, the efficiency of inverted bottom-emitting OLED with ITO cathode is comparable with the conventional bottom-emitting OLED with ITO anode. The top-emitting IOLED with Ag cathode shows high current efficiency of 76.4 cd/A which is 2.38 times of that of the conventional bottom-emitting OLED with ITO anode. The results indicate that the electron injection from cathode was observably improved by the Ag-doped interlayer and such interlayer is cathode independent relatively.
