    Abstract: We report a 2GHz repetition-rate, all-solid-state femtosecond blue source. Pumped by a 740mW femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser with the same repetition rate, 150mW femtosecond pulses at 409nm can be efficiently generated from the external resonant cavity with a lithium triborate crystal.

    Abstract: Temperature measurement is of great significance for research in the health monitoring of large structures and earthquake precursors. Against the frequently reported low sensitivity of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors, a bimetallic-sensitized FBG temperature sensor was proposed. The sensitization structure of the FBG temperature sensor was designed, and the sensor sensitivity was analyzed; the lengths and materials of the substrate and strain transfer beam were analyzed theoretically; 7075 aluminum and 4J36 invar were chosen as bimetallic materials, and the ratio of the substrate length to the sensing fiber length was determined. The structural parameters were optimized; the real sensor was developed, and its performance was tested. The results suggested that the sensitivity of the FBG temperature sensor was 50.2 pm/°C, about five times than that of a bare FBG sensor, and its linearity was more than 0.99. The findings offer a reference for developing sensors of the same type and further improving the sensitivity of the FBG temperature sensors.

    Abstract: In this study, laboratory observations of the perturbations of the magnetic field are reported due to the injection of attachment chemicals (CF4, SF6, and CO2) into argon plasmas. Besides the well-known electron density reduction, we also observed magnetic field perturbation in the experiment. The measured induced voltage Ḃ, which is taken as a proxy of the time-changing electromagnetic field, fluctuates in the boundary layer between the ambient plasmas and negative ions plasmas. Perturbations of the magnetic field were investigated by changing the ambient pressure and ratio of attachment chemicals. The measured Ḃ keeps increasing in these lower pressures; but it no longer increases as the ambient pressure higher than a threshold, e.g., for CF4, SF6, and CO2, the transition pressure is 6Pa, 5Pa and 4Pa, respectively. The magnitude of the Ḃ increase with the change of the ratio of release flow until at higher ratios, e.g., 40%. We transformed these time-sampled data into the frequency domain and found coherent modes with fundamental frequencies lying in the lower hybrid range. In addition, these coherent frequencies show a frequency drift with the increase of the contents of the negative ions. These modes were suggested as the magnetic component of electron-ion hybrid mode. This work has an important application in the study of artificially-created ionospheric depletion which is usually generated by releasing of attachment chemicals in the upper atmosphere.

    Abstract: In our experiment, the transition points between the two operational modes of capacitive coupling (E mode) and inductive coupling (H mode) were investigated at a wide range of mercury vapor pressures in an inductively coupled plasma, varying with the input radio-frequency powers and the total filling pressures (10 Pa–30 Pa). The electron temperatures were calculated versus with the mercury vapor pressures for different values of the total filling pressures. The transition power points and electron density also were measured in this study. It is shown that the transition powers, whether the E to H mode transition or the H to E mode transition, are lower than that of the argon discharge, and these powers almost increase with the mercury vapor pressure rising. However, the transition electron density follows an inverse relationship with the mercury vapor pressures compared with the transition powers. In addition, at the lower pressures and higher mercury vapor pressures, an inverse hysteresis was observed clearly, which did not appear in the argon gas plasma. We suggest that all these results are attributed to the electron-neutral collision frequency changed with the additional mercury vapor pressures.

    Abstract: Considering the gas pressure and radio frequency power change, the mode transition of E↔H were investigated in inductively coupled plasmas. It can be found that the transition power has almost the same trend decreasing with gas pressure, whether it is in H mode or E mode. However, the transition density increases slowly with gas pressure from E to H mode. The transition points of E to H mode can be understood by the propagation of electromagnetic wave in the plasma, while the H to E should be illustrated by the electric field strength. Moreover, the electron density, increasing with the pressure and power, can be attributed to the multiple ionization, which changes the energy loss per electron-ion pair created. In addition, the optical emission characteristics in E and H mode is also shown. The line ratio of I750.4 and I811.5, taken as a proxy of the density of metastable state atoms, was used to illustrate the hysteresis. The 750.4 nm line intensity, which has almost the same trend with the 811.5 nm line intensity in H mode, both of them increases with power but decreases with gas pressure. The line ratio of 811.5/750.4 has a different change rule in E mode and H mode, and at the transition point of H to E, it can be one significant factor that results in the hysteresis as the gas pressure change. And compared with the 811.5 nm intensity, it seems like a similar change rule with RF power in E mode. Moreover, some emitted lines with lower rate constants don’t turn up in E mode, while can be seen in H mode because the excited state atom density increasing with the electron density.

    Abstract: An autofocusing optical image stabilization actuator (AFOISA) will become standard equipment quickly in megapixel resolution mobile phone cameras (MPCs). A slim AFOISA composed of two orthogonal directions has been developed based on magnetic analysis and it is an effective solution to address image quality of a charged coupled device to compensate 10–20Hz hand jitter in taking photos. However, environmental disturbance often occur irregular shake, such as when a photographer holds a MPC while walking or in a vehicle. Therefore, this paper develops an adaptive model-following control (AMFC) law including two proportional-integral-derivative controllers with position and speed feedback control, which is shown to be able to compensate for irregular shake of MPCs and to obtain fast response. Although irregular environmental shake cause parameter variation, an adaptation mechanism synthesizes an auxiliary input signal to assure that an AFOISA plant exactly behaves as a reference model. The time response by utilizing AMFC includes 30ms settling time and 5μm steady state error without any overshoot. Furthermore, a compensatory force can quickly cancel irregular disturbance. As a result, the present slim AFOISA satisfies the optical demands of MPCs.

    Abstract: High-performance electronic systems require efficient heat dissipation devices. Vapor chambers (VCs) are practical thermal solutions for lightweight portable electronics that have limited heat dissipation space. A functional VC requires an interior wick to sustain the capillary circulation of the condensed fluid back to the heated region. The capillary wick performance can be indexed by the ratio of liquid permeability to the effective pore size of the wick structure. This study describes the capillary behavior of a thin hierarchical dendritic copper film ( & lt;100 μm thick) prepared by electrodeposition and thermal sintering. The effects of the electrodeposition current density, deposition time, and sintering temperature on the capillary performance of the dendritic copper films were investigated. The relationship between the wicking capability and dendritic morphology, tailored by the electrodeposition process, was explored. A post-deposition sintering treatment was found to be beneficial for improving the structural integrity, adhesion, and capillary performance of dendritic copper wicks. A very high capillary performance (0.81 μm) was realized on a 30-μm-thick dendritic copper wick that matches the need for ultrathin VCs used in highly compact electronic systems.

    Abstract: This work investigates the effect on hot carrier degradation (HCD) of doping zirconium into the hafnium oxide high-k layer in the nanoscale high-k/metal gate n-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistors. Previous n-metal-oxide semiconductor-field effect transistor studies demonstrated that zirconium-doped hafnium oxide reduces charge trapping and improves positive bias temperature instability. In this work, a clear reduction in HCD is observed with zirconium-doped hafnium oxide because channel hot electron (CHE) trapping in pre-existing high-k bulk defects is the main degradation mechanism. However, this reduced HCD became ineffective at ultra-low temperature, since CHE traps in the deeper bulk defects at ultra-low temperature, while zirconium-doping only passivates shallow bulk defects.

    Abstract: A piezoelectric nanogenerator with self-amplified output is prepared with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/silver nanowire (Ag NW)/poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) sandwich structure. The Ag NWs facilitate the collection of induced charge generated by the piezoelectric film, and the micro-patterned PDMS films multiply the devices sensitivity under external compression. The nanogenerator exhibits good performance, with a peak open circuit voltage of 1.2 V, and a peak short circuit current of 82 nA. These findings highlight the potential of the nanogenerator in self-powered devices and wearable energy harvesters.
