Abstract: Modifiable resistance switching (RS) is demonstrated in devices made of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) on heavy-doped n-type silicon nanotips (n+-SiNTs) template. The high RS ratio of 900% with low switching voltage (±2 V) and read voltage (+0.1 V) prove the applicability of such devices for resistance memory cells. The RS mechanism can be modulated from interfacial charge transfer to Mott metal-insulator transition, dependent on the number of defect state at the surface of LSMO in association with the morphology of SiNTs.

Abstract: In this paper, we had quantitatively investigated the photoluminescence of organic emitter on a Si substrate with periodically corrugated metal thin film experimentally and theoretically. Due to the plasmonic coupling by the metal gratings, 4.3 times and 1.7 times enhancements in optical intensities were observed at specified and full viewing angles at certain wavelengths, respectively. Good agreement of angular-frequency versus in-plane wavevector (ω-k) curves between experiments and calculations were obtained when varying organic materials, metal materials, and grating pitches. Two different metal materials were used, which show slight shift in ω-k curves due to the high sensitivity of the surface plasmon to the relative permittivity.

Abstract: We have investigated the dynamics of the F+C4H6 reaction using the universal crossed molecular beam method. The C4H5F+H reaction channel was observed in this experiment. Angular resolved time-of-flight spectra have been measured for the C4H5F product. Product angular distributions as well as kinetic energy distributions were determined for this product channel. Experimental results show that the C4H5F product is largely backward scattered with considerable forward scattering signal, relative to the F atom beam direction. This suggests that the reaction channel mainly proceeds via a long-lived complex formation mechanism, with possible contribution from a direct SN2 type mechanism.

Abstract: Silicon insert is a promising tool for microinjection moulding (MIM). However, its fracture problem induced by impact in MIM creates a bottleneck for application. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact behaviour in MIM and the effect on the fracture of silicon inserts. The finite element method is utilised to calculate the crack propagation of silicon inserts with pressure load and thermal load in the MIM process. The simulation result shows that the crack propagation is more easily induced by the increase of pressure load, while the temperature change has little effect on the crack propagation. An experimental platform, including a novel rotatable insert mould, is developed to investigate the dynamic pressure in the MIM process. The result shows that both the maximum pressure and the maximum loading rate occur in the initial period of MIM process. It indicates that the silicon insert is more prone to fracture at the beginning of the MIM process, and spatial pressure peaks are observed in the cavity as well. The nearly consistent distribution between the peak positions and the insert fracture zones shows that the pressure distribution is quite relevant to the fracture of the silicon insert. The result is helpful because it reveals the fracture phenomenon of silicon inserts.

Abstract: We report on an experimental demonstration of two-way communication between sky and underwater for the first time. Signal transmission from sky to underwater is realized by the thermoacoustic effect (TE), while from underwater to sky, this is based on the microwave vibration measurement (MVM). With a homemade experimental setup, the two-way transmission of “UESTC” is realized. This study suggests that TE combined with MVM has the potential to be used for two-way wireless communication between sky and underwater.

Abstract: Metalens consisting of arrays of subwavelength nanostructures with ultrathin, lightweight, and tailorable characteristics have been in the spotlight to develop next-generation optical elements beyond existing refractive or diffractive optics. However, billions of subwavelength nanostructures of the metalens pose a serious challenge for fabrication, especially for the large-area ones. Herein, we designed and fabricated an unconventional optical sparse aperture (UOSA) metalens that consists of four identical and concentric annular sectors sub-aperture metalens, and it has the larger nonzero domain of modulation transfer function compared with the OSA metalens. The numerical simulation and experiments jointly show that the UOSA metalens has a limited diffraction resolution (0.91 µm) as the conventional full aperture metalens. The UOSA method can not only enlarge the effective aperture of the metalens with lower cost and less processing time but also extend a new degree of freedom for the design of the OSA metalens.

Abstract: Through direct visualization at the discrete level, the microexcitations in cold 2+1D dusty plasma liquids formed by negatively charged dusts suspended in low pressure gaseous discharges were experimentally investigated, in which the downward ion flow wake field induces strong vertical coupling and chain bundle structure. It is found that the horizontal structure and motion are similar to those of the two-dimensional liquid. Different types of basic cooperative chain excitations: straight vertical chains with small amplitude jittering, chain tilting-restraightening, bundle twisting-restraightening, and chain breaking-reconnection, are observed. The region with good (poor) horizontal structural order prefers the straight (tilted or broken) chains with little (large) titling and tilting rate.

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate a micro-electro-mechanically tunable metamaterial with enhanced electro-optical performance by increasing the number of movable cantilevers in the symmetrical split ring resonator metamaterial unit cell. Simulations were carried out to understand the interaction of the incident terahertz radiation with out-of-plane deforming metamaterial resonator. In order to improve the overall device performance, the number of released cantilever in a unit cell was increased from one to two, and it was seen that the tunable range was doubled and the switching contrast improved by a factor of around five at 0.7 THz. This simple design approach can be adopted for a wide range of high performance electro-optical devices such as continuously tunable filters, modulators, and electro-optic switches to enable future photonic circuit applications.

Abstract: Topological semimetals (TSMs) refer to electronic gapless phases that exhibit topological band crossings around the Fermi level and have intrigued enormous research interest in the past few decades. There have been many theoretical and experimental progresses regarding TSMs, and first-principles calculations have been proven to be an instrumental tool in finding candidate materials for TSMs. In this tutorial, we will focus on two representative types of TSMs—Weyl and Dirac semimetals and summarize the recent progress from the perspective of first-principles calculations. First of all, the basic concepts of TSMs, the generic topological invariants, and the frequently used techniques within first-principles calculations are briefly introduced. Second, taking typical materials as representative examples, we summarize the characteristic electronic properties, formation mechanisms, and general methodologies for Weyl and Dirac semimetals, respectively. In the last part, we present a short review of recent progresses on other types of TSMs.

Abstract: N , N -bis(4-trifluoromethoxybenzyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene-tetracarboxylic di-imide was applied to organic semiconductors for bottom-contact thin-film transistors. The carrier mobility was 1.6×10−2cm2V−1s−1, the threshold voltage (VT) was +5.5V, and the on/off current ratio was 8.6×105. Devices without any further surface treatments were tested in an ambient environment. The threshold voltage shift (ΔVT) was verified by gate bias stress measurements. A prototype compound, N,N-bis(4-trifluoromethylbenzyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic di-imide, shows direct correlation to the bottom-contact device with the varied molecular structure.
