    Abstract: The first laser–plasma interaction experiment using lasers of eight beams grouped into one octad has been conducted on the Shenguang Octopus facility. Although each beam intensity is below its individual threshold for stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS), collective behaviors are excited to enhance the octad SBS. In particular, when two-color/cone lasers with wavelength separation 0.3 nm are used, the backward SBS reflectivities show novel behavior in which beams of longer wavelength achieve higher SBS gain. This property of SBS can be attributed to the rotation of the wave vectors of common ion acoustic waves due to the competition of detunings between geometrical angle and wavelength separation. This mechanism is confirmed using massively parallel supercomputer simulations with the three-dimensional laser–plasma interaction code LAP3D.

    Abstract: Eu doped aluminum nitride phosphors were successfully synthesized by a novel gas-reduction-nitridation route with a reaction temperature of 1400 °C and a soaking time of 3 h. The obtained AlN:Eu phosphors were analyzed to elucidate the location of the Eu luminescent center. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectra proved that Eu was located in the crystal lattice of AlN, then EXAFS revealed that Eu occupied a highly distorted Al site coordinated by four nitrogen at about 2.30–2.40 Å, and the second nearest neighbors of Eu were 12 Al. This could be confirmed by the first-principles calculations based on the obtained local structure around the Eu luminescence center, where the theoretical absorption spectrum was similar to the experimental excitation spectrum. X-ray appearance near edge structure showed that Eu existed in terms of both Eu3+ and Eu2+ ions, which could be related to the limited location space of Eu. High temperature treatment could significantly increase the amount of Eu2+ by the expansion of the crystal lattice, leading to an increased green luminescence of the obtained AlN:Eu phosphors.

    Abstract: Observed is 15 times enhancement of Ho3+ green upconversion (UC) emission in Ho3+(0.75 mol %)/Nd3+(0.75 mol %) doped lithium niobate crystal after incorporating with 4 mol % of Yb3+ under 800 nm femtosecond laser excitation. Yb3+ acting as bridging ion increases the energy transfer efficiency from Nd3+ F43/2 level to Ho3+ in these triply doped systems. The nonradiative energy transfer efficiency from Nd3+ F43/2 to Yd3+ F25/2 level can reach to 56%. The UC emission mechanisms are proposed based on spectral, kinetic, and pump power dependence analyses. The green UC emission is accomplished through a multi-ion interaction involving ground state absorption by the Nd3+ (I49/2→H29/2,F45/2) followed by three successive energy transfer processes involving one Nd3+-Yb3+ (F43/2+F27/2→I49/2+F25/2) and two Yb3+-Ho3+ pairs (F25/2+I58→F27/2+I56 and F25/2+I56→F27/2+S52,F54); whereas the red is dominated by excited state absorption of the Ho3+ (I57→F55) following two successive energy transfer processes involving the Nd3+-Yb3+ (F43/2+F27/2→I49/2+F25/2) and Yb3+-Ho3+ pairs (F25/2+I58→F27/2+I56) followed by the Ho3+ nonradiative relaxation to I57.

    Abstract: Electric-double-layer oxide-based thin-film transistors gated by nanogranular SiO2 solid electrolyte have been fabricated at room temperature. The effects of humidity on performances are investigated. At the relative humidity of 65 %, the measured capacitance is 10 μF/cm2, and the device shows Ion/off ratio of 8.93 × 107, field-effect mobility of 5.9 cm2/Vs. As relative humidity declines, the measured capacitance decreases, which gives rise to the degradation in performance. Especially, at the relative humidity of 0 %, the capacitance of 0.01 μF/cm2 is measured, so the device cannot be turned off. The reason may be that humidity can promote H2O molecules to permeate into solid electrolyte, which can cause charges accumulation.

    Abstract: Optical absorption, spectrally resolved polarized upconversion fluorescence, and time-resolved luminescence spectra are used to investigate the Er3+ spectroscopic properties in a series of congruent LiNbO3 crystals codoped with Er3+ (1 mol %) and MgO (X mol %, X=0, 2, 4, 6, and 8). The absorption spectra indicate that the transition cross section of Er3+ ions decreases with increasing MgO concentration; it is explained as the improvement of the Er3+-site symmetries. A new Er3+ energy site with low energy, which appears in the long wavelength side of the polarized fluorescence spectra for the samples heavily codoped with MgO, is demonstrated in the time-resolved luminescence spectra. An important finding is that mild codoping with MgO clearly does not facilitate the formation of clustered sites, whereas heavy codoping clearly does facilitate it in Er3+-doped LiNbO3 crystals. These results are important to those who consider the material as a 1.5 μm laser or fiber optical cable.

    Abstract: Bio-inspired long-based undulating fin propulsion is commonly employed in biological autonomous underwater vehicles (BAUVs), while the hydrodynamic characteristics of various undulating patterns are different. To investigate what kind of undulating pattern has outstanding propulsion or braking performance for BAUVs in directional maneuvers, undulations with four basic undulating patterns are numerically examined under the Open-source Field Operation And Manipulation environment at the Reynolds number of 5 × 102, 5 × 103, and 5 × 104, corresponding to viscous, transitional, and inertial flow regimes, respectively. The study is conducted at various non-dimensional phase speeds c (0.5–2.0, normalized by incoming flow speed) at a constant maximum amplitude of 0.08 and a wavelength of 0.5 (both are normalized by the fin cord length) to imitate the long-based fin. The numerical results indicate that the undulating fin motion with the amplitude envelope gradually increasing from the anterior part to the posterior (conical sinusoidal wave) part may be preferable for thrust generation; undulating with the amplitude envelope increasing from the anterior part to the mid part and decreasing toward the posterior (fusiform sinusoidal wave) presents the superior braking performance when the phase speed is low enough. Moreover, the influence of undulating patterns on the wake structure is analyzed. Through further comparative analysis for propulsion and braking performances, the results obtained here may have instructional significance to the propulsion mechanism in bionic design.

    Abstract: Visible and ultraviolet upconversion (UC) emission is observed under 800 nm femtosecond laser excitation in LiNbO3 crystals triply doped with Tm3+, Yb3+, and Nd3+ at room temperature. Energy transfer (ET) from Nd3+ to Yb3+ then to Tm3+ is very important in this UC emission process. The overlapping between the emissions of D12→F34 and G14→H36, which makes up of blue emission band, is confirmed by transient investigation. From the pump energy dependence investigation, it is known that the dominant populating mechanism for the G14 state is the two-photon process, and that for D12 is the three-photon process. In our UC emission model, the G14 state is populated by the ET of F25/2(Yb3+)+H34(Tm3+)→F27/2(Yb3+)+G14(Tm3+), D12 state is populated by the ET of F32+H34→D12+H36 among Tm3+ ions. For LiNbO3 crystals doped with Tm3+ to the concentration of 0.9 mol %, the measured lifetimes of G14 and D12 are ∼80 and 4 μs.

    Abstract: In order to study the laser plasma instabilities (LPIs) in the context of some novel six-side laser-driven indirect designs like the six-cylinder-port hohlraum and the three-axis cylindrical hohlraum, where the laser beams inject in hohlraum with a large angle. LPI experiments in cylindrical hohlraum with only outer beams were designed and performed based on the current laser arrangement condition of SGIII laser facility for the first time. Stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) was found to be the dominant instability with high instantaneous reflectivity in experiments. A typical feature was obtained in the time-resolved spectra of SBS, which maintained similar for different laser intensities of the interaction beam. The experimental data are analyzed by the hydrodynamic simulations combined with HLIP code, which is based on the ray-tracing model. By analysis of experimental data, it is argued that the mixture of gas and Au in the region of their interface is important to SBS, which indicates the need for the mixture model between the filled gas and the high Z plasma from hohlraum wall in the hydrodynamic simulations. Nonlinear saturation of SBS as well as the smoothed beam are also discussed here. Our effective considerations of the ions pervasion effect and the smoothed beam provide utilitarian ways for improvement of the current ray-tracing method.

    Abstract: A compact double-layer wideband 1:60 power divider/combiner based on a radial-line waveguide is designed and investigated for high-power microwave (HPM) applications. Compared with other HPM radial-line power dividers, the proposed power divider is smaller and more compact. The power divider is miniaturized by the double-layer method, and the wideband characteristic is realized by a specially designed wavy disk. Moreover, it can divide the microwave energy into 60 output ports equally by symmetrical design. As for simulation, in the range of 1.64–3.6 GHz, the voltage standing-wave ratio is below 2 (the relative bandwidth is 76%) and the return loss reaches −44 dB at 2.1 GHz. Additionally, a prototype is fabricated and the wideband performance from 1.6 to 2.6 GHz is verified by an existing wideband antenna array. Furthermore, filled with SF6 (0.3 MPa), the theoretical power handling capacity is more than 200 MW and the device works steadily in HPM tests under the condition of 140 MW. To sum up, the compact power divider/combiner has important application potentials in HPM fields.

    Abstract: In circular waveguides, the TE01 mode has the lowest transmission loss, which is very suitable for long-distance transmission of high-power microwaves (HPMs). The output mode of HPM sources is mainly the TM01 mode; however, there are few research studies on mode converters of TM01-TE01. In this paper, a high efficiency HPM TM01-TE01 mode converter is designed; compared with the traditional TM01-TE01 mode converters, the structure of the mode converter is compact and easier to process. It is mainly composed of an input circular waveguide, a tapered rectangular waveguide, a 90° bent rectangular waveguide, and an output circular waveguide. A prototype with a center frequency of 2.4 GHz is fabricated and HPM experiments are carried out. The transmission efficiency of this device reaches 99.8% in the simulation, and the measured transmission efficiency is more than 98%. Additionally, the measured power handling capacity is more than 1 GW, which is consistent with simulation. This design has important reference significance for the design of long-distance power transmission devices and HPM mode converters.
