Abstract: We proposed a simple and cost-effective method to manipulate the temporal and spectral properties of pulsed terahertz waves. A deep modulation of a pulse spectrum was both numerically and experimentally verified using Fresnel apertures with a radius ranging from several to several tens of the central wavelength of the broadband terahertz radiation. N-fold frequency minima were formed in the spectrum at a specific axial position behind the filter. Non-paraxial properties of this filter were also analyzed. A significant value (35%) of the ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse field component at the filter frequency was obtained. The measured results agree well with the simulation and theoretical predictions. The property of such a diffractive Fresnel notch filter can benefit the generation of longitudinal terahertz fields and relevant applications.

Abstract: Metal Vapor Vacuum Arc (MEVVA) ion source (IS) is a unique tool for production of high intensity metal ion beam that can be used for material surface modification. From the other hand, the duoplasmatron ion source provides the high intensity gas ion beams. The MEVVA and duoplasmatron IS developed in Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics were used for the reactor steel surface modification experiments. Response of ferritic-martensitic steel specimens on titanium and nitrogen ions implantation and consequent vacuum annealing was investigated. Increase in microhardness of near surface region of irradiated specimens was observed. Local chemical analysis shows atom mixing and redistribution in the implanted layer followed with formation of ultrafine precipitates after annealing.

Abstract: Experiments with Fourier transform spectrometry of Nafion, a water-swollen polymeric membrane, are described. The transmittance spectra of liquid samples and Nafion, soaked in these samples, were studied, depending on the deuterium content in water in the spectral range 1.8–2.15 μm. The experiments were carried out using two protocols: in the first protocol we studied the dynamics of Nafion swelling in H2O + D2O mixtures for the deuterium concentrations 3 & lt; C & lt; 104 ppm, and in the second protocol we studied the dynamics of swelling in pure heavy water (C = 106 ppm). For liquid mixtures in the concentration range 3 & lt; C & lt; 104 ppm, the transmittance spectra are the same, but for Nafion soaked in these fluids, the corresponding spectra are different. It is shown that, in the range of deuterium contents C = 90–500 ppm, the behavior of transmittance of the polymer membrane is non-monotonic. In experiments using the second protocol, the dynamics of diffusion replacement of residual water, which is always present in the bulk of the polymer membrane inside closed cavities (i.e., without access to atmospheric air), were studied. The experimentally estimated diffusion coefficient for this process is ≈6·10−11 cm2/s.

Abstract: Presently, density functional computational studies of nanostructures in heterogeneous catalysts consider either sufficiently big (“scalable with size”) unsupported metal nanoparticles (NPs) or small supported metal clusters. Both models may not be sufficiently representative of a few nm in size supported transition metal NPs dealt with in experiment. As a first step in closing the gap between theoretical models and prepared systems, we investigate the effect of a rather chemically inert oxide support, MgO(100), on relative energies and various properties of Pd and Pt NPs that consist of 49–155 atoms (1.2–1.6 nm in size) and exhibit bulk-like fcc structural arrangements. Shapes and interface configurations of metal NPs on MgO were obtained as a result of thorough optimization within the fcc motif using interatomic potentials. Then the stability and properties of the NPs were studied with a density functional method. We comprehensively characterize interaction between the NPs and MgO(100) support, their interface and effect of the support on NP properties. While the effect of MgO on relative stabilities of NPs with different shapes is found to be significant, other properties of the NPs such as electronic structure and interatomic distances within NP do not notably change upon deposition. This work paves the way to large-scale first-principles computational studies of more realistic models of oxide-supported metal catalysts.
