    Abstract: The metal–nonmetal (MN) transition data of mixed valent manganese oxide perovskites A1−xAx′MnO3 (A: trivalent lanthanide metals, A′: divalent metals, 0.2 & lt;x & lt;0.5) are analyzed in terms of the tolerance factor (t), and the standard deviation (σ) of the A-site cation sizes. The interplay of these two parameters that measure the overall and atomic scale distortions, respectively, determine whether a compound can show a MN transition or not and its transition temperature (TMN). In order to show a MN transition, a compound should have t & gt;0.906 and σ≲σ=232t−202 (pm). Large t and small σ are favorable for high TMN.TMN data of A0.7Ba0.15Sr0.15MnO3 (A=La, Pr, Nd, Sm), A0.7Ba0.15Ca0.15MnO3 (A=La, Pr, Nd, Sm), (La0.7Ca0.3)x(Gd0.7Ba0.3)1−xMnO3 (x=0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9), and (Nd0.7Ca0.3)x(Gd0.7Ba0.3)1−xMnO3(x=0.25, 0.3, 0.5, 0.55, 0.7, 0.75) newly synthesized are reported.

    Abstract: A quadrupole mass filter consists of four equidistant parallel rods. Each opposing rod pair is connected electrically, and direct current (DC) and radio frequency alternating current (AC) potentials are applied between one pair of rods and the other. For specific combinations of AC and DC potentials, only ions with a particular mass-to-charge ratio will have a stable trajectory and pass through the quadrupole. Other ions collide with the rods and are not transmitted. The mass filtering is entirely based on the stability of the trajectory of the ions inside the quadrupole. Despite its simple physical geometry and obvious mass separating principle, it is very difficult to analyze the ion behavior in the device even if there is a small deviation from ideal operating conditions. In this paper, the ion transmission probabilities through a quadrupole were calculated using computer simulation at various initial ion conditions and quadrupole mechanical misalignment. The results of this study mainly show the allowable error for quadrupole design, which can be used in improving the performance of the quadrupole mass filter.

    Abstract: Li 0.5 Fe 2.5 − x Rh x O 4  (x=0.25–1.50) has been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, and x-ray diffraction. The crystals are found to be a cubic spinel structure and have been classified into two different sets by crystallographic symmetry, the space group Fd3m for x=0.25–1.25 and the space group F4¯3m for x=1.50, respectively. The migration of Li ion has been confirmed by x-ray patterns and the results of Mössbauer analysis. The saturated magnetic moment measured at 4.2K and Mössbauer spectra taken at various temperatures with 6.0T applied field show that the spin structure of Li0.5Fe2.5−xRhxO4 has the collinear Néel model.
