    Abstract: We report the effects of the growth ambient on photoluminescence (PL) emission properties of ZnO films grown on Si (100) by rf magnetron sputtering. Upon increasing the O2/Ar+O2 ratio in the growing ambient, the visible emission in the room-temperature PL spectra was drastically suppressed without sacrificing the band-edge emission intensity in the ultraviolet region. This tendency is estimated to be due to the reduction of the oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials in the film induced by the improvement of the film stoichiometry with respect to high oxygen content, indicating that the visible emission in ZnO originates from oxygen vacancy or zinc interstitial related defects. The violet emission peaked at about 401 nm (3.09 eV) was observed in the low-temperature PL spectra of the ZnO films grown under oxygen-rich conditions. This emission band was assigned to the electron transition from the bottom of the conduction band to the Zn vacancy level, positioned approximately 3.06 eV below the conduction band edge.

    Abstract: Tissue engineering has emerged as a promising approach to viable small-diameter vascular grafts that may be used to treat cardiovascular diseases. One challenge in constructing such blood vessels is proper localization of endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells, as well as promotion of their cellular functions to generate functional tissues. Thus far, construction of small-diameter vascular substitutes with both endothelial and muscular tissues, which is essential for the grafts to acquire antithrombosis function and sufficient strength to avoid thrombus formation as well as to withstand blood pressure, has not yet been demonstrated. In this study, we engineer small-diameter blood vessel grafts containing both functional endothelial and muscular cell layers, which has been demonstrated in vivo in a living rat model. Our construction of the blood vessel grafts uses vascular-tissue-derived extracellular matrix bioinks and a reservoir-assisted triple-coaxial cell printing technique. The prematured vessel was implanted for three weeks as a graft of rat abdominal aorta in a proof-of-concept study where all implants showed great patency, intact endothelium, remodeled smooth muscle, and integration with host tissues at the end of the study. These outcomes suggest that our approach to tissue-engineered biomimetic blood vessels provides a promising route for the construction of durable small-diameter vascular grafts that may be used in future treatments of cardiovascular diseases.

    Abstract: A dual sensor probe array is designed and constructed for internal magnetic field measurement at Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST) at the Seoul National University. Simultaneous use of Hall sensors and chip inductors allows cross-calibration among the measurements and compensation for each other's weaknesses while their small sizes are expected to cause only mild plasma perturbations. Calibration of the dual sensor probe array, using a Helmholtz coil, shows good sensitivity for the magnetic field measurement of the VEST. Prior to Ohmic start-up, the magnetic field structure inside the vacuum chamber is measured by using the calibrated probe array. The dual sensor probe array is expected to be useful in analyzing the temporal magnetic field structure change during the magnetic reconnection and in reconstruction of the current profile during the discharge of the VEST device.
