Abstract: Ba Nb 2 O 6 -doped microstructures as artificial pinning centers in ErBa2Cu3O7−δ films were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The presence of nanorods, which contain niobium, was confirmed from bright-field images and elemental map images. The crystal structure of the nanorod was determined to be cubic perovskite. The lattice constant of nanorods in the ErBa2Cu3O7−δ film was in good agreement with the lattice constant of Ba(Er0.5Nb0.5)O3. Furthermore, parallel Moiré fringes were observed in the bright-field images. It has never been confirmed by any other researchers that BaNb2O6 doped into the ErBa2Cu3O7−δ film transforms to Ba(Er0.5Nb0.5)O3 nanorods with a perovskite structure.

Abstract: A six-pole Q-band waveguide filter with a notch frequency above the Q-band has been developed for plasma diagnostics. The previous paper [Nishiura et al., J. Instrum. 10, C12014 (2015)] reported that the notch frequency exists within the standard band. In this study, the newly required notch filter extends the function, which prevents a thorny wave from being mixed into an instrument beyond the standard bandwidth of the waveguide. The mode control technique for cavities realizes a deep and sharp filter shape for Q-band notch filters with 56 and 77 GHz notches, respectively. The former filter has an attenuation more than 50 dB at 56.05 GHz and a bandwidth of 1.1 GHz at −3 dB. The latter filter has an attenuation more than 55 dB at 76.95 GHz and a bandwidth of 1.6 GHz at −3 dB. The electron cyclotron emission imaging and the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics for the Q-band implemented a pair of the fabricated filters and demonstrated the ECE measurement successfully in the intense stray radiation from a 56 GHz gyrotron.

Abstract: For use in high-magnetic-field coil-based applications, the critical current density (Jc) of REBa2Cu3Oy (REBCO, where RE = rare earth) coated conductors must be isotropically improved, with respect to the direction of the magnetic field; these improvements must be realized at the operating conditions of these applications. In this study, improvement of the Jc for various applied directions of magnetic field was achieved by controlling the morphology of the BaHfO3 (BHO) nano-rods in a SmBCO film. We fabricated the 3.0 vol. % BHO-doped SmBCO film at a low growth temperature of 720 °C, by using a seed layer technique (Ts = 720 °C film). The low-temperature growth resulted in a morphological change in the BHO nano-rods. In fact, a high number density of (3.1 ± 0.1) × 103 μm−2 of small (diameter: 4 ± 1 nm), discontinuous nano-rods that grew in various directions, was obtained. In Jc measurements, the Jc of the Ts = 720 °C film in all directions of the applied magnetic field was higher than that of the non-doped SmBCO film. The Jcmin (6.4 MA/cm2) of the former was more than 6 times higher than that (1.0 MA/cm2) of the latter at 40 K, under 3 T. The aforementioned results indicated that the discontinuous BHO nano-rods, which occurred with a high number density, exerted a 3D-like flux pinning at the measurement conditions considered. Moreover, at 4.2 K and under 17 T, a flux pinning force density of 1.6 TN/m3 was realized; this value was comparable to the highest value recorded, to date.

Abstract: Excimer laser- (248 nm) induced pyrene implantation in a solid polymer has been investigated in the forward-transfer configuration. Atomic force microscopy provides detailed topological images of the implanted surface, the geometry of which remains mostly unaltered following low-intensity laser radiation in contrast to a laser ablation transfer case. The dopant host polymer thickness appears to strongly influence the efficiency of the process. The experimental results are interpreted on the basis of a thermally activated ejection and implantation mechanism.

Abstract: BiFeO3 (BFO) and LaxSryMnzO3 (LSMO) films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (100) substrates by r.f. magnetron sputtering with various oxygen gas flow ratios (FO2). Compositional ratios of each atom in both of BFO and LSMO could be controlled kept to around 10 at.% by changing FO2. Adjusting the compositional ratio to La0.35Sr0.15Mn0.5O3 not only increase Tc of LSMO but also produces sufficient oxygen to form a perovskite lattice. For an LSMO/BFO heterostructure, detailed observation by cross sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the lattice of rhombohedral (SG: R-3c) LSMO was shrank by a clamping effect from the SrTiO3 substrates, and then the BFO was grown in two layers: (i) an interfacial BFO layer (7 nm thick) with evenly shrunk a-axis and c-axis, and (ii) an upper BFO layer (25 nm thick) expanded along the c-axis. Neither misfit strain nor dislocations appeared at the interface between the shrunken BFO and LSMO layers, and these heterostructures did not show exchange bias. These results suggest that BFO is suitable for a tunneling barrier combine with LSMO electrode.

Abstract: We have prepared 2% Al doped ZnO (AZO) thin films on SrTiO3 (STO) and Al2O3 substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition technique at various deposition temperatures (Tdep = 300 °C–600 °C). Transport and thermoelectric properties of AZO thin films were studied in low temperature range (300 K–600 K). AZO/STO films present superior performance respect to AZO/Al2O3 films deposited at the same temperature, except for films deposited at 400 °C. Best film is the fully c-axis oriented AZO/STO deposited at 300 °C, which epitaxial strain and dislocation density are the lowest: electrical conductivity 310 S/cm, Seebeck coefficient −65 μV/K, and power factor 0.13 × 10−3 W m−1 K−2 at 300 K. Its performance increases with temperature. For instance, power factor is enhanced up to 0.55 × 10−3 W m−1 K−2 at 600 K, surpassing the best AZO film previously reported in literature.

Abstract: Anomalous superconducting properties were demonstrated in anisotropic high-critical-temperature superconductors (HTSCs) by simultaneously introducing two different planar types of vortex-pinning centers. The nanostructure, magnetic field, and field-angle dependency of critical current properties for an a-axis-grown multilayered film consisting of superconducting and semiconducting layers were characterized. Semiconductive layers running perpendicular to CuO2 superconducting layers behave as novel two-dimensional vortex-pinning centers that reverse the typical magnetic response in the superconducting state observed for conventional HTSCs. The results indicate that the vortex behavior in nanostructured HTSCs can be controlled; therefore, significant potential exists for further improvement of the critical current properties.

Abstract: We demonstrate the growth of Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films on CaF2 (001), SrF2 (001), and BaF2 (001) single crystal substrates using pulsed laser deposition. All films are grown epitaxially despite of a large misfit of −10.6% for BaF2 substrate. For all films, a reaction layer is formed at the interface confirmed by X-ray diffraction and for the films grown on CaF2 and BaF2 additionally by transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting transition temperature of the film on CaF2 is around 27 K, whereas the corresponding values of the films on SrF2 and BaF2 are around 22 K and 21 K, respectively. The Ba-122 on CaF2 shows almost identical crystalline quality and superconducting properties as films on Fe-buffered MgO.

Abstract: The combined effect of a single grain boundary and artificial pinning centers (APCs) on the critical current density (Jc) in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films was investigated. The authors decorated the surface of a 5°-tilt bicrystal SrTiO3 substrate with Y2O3 nanoislands to introduce APCs into the film. Jc of the bicrystal YBa2Cu3O7−δ film with APCs was measured in various magnetic fields. The APCs improved Jc in high magnetic fields, but not in low magnetic fields due to the existence of the grain boundary. The limiting mechanism of Jc in the bicrystal film containing APCs is discussed based on the experimental results.

Abstract: Anomalous changes in irreversibility lines (ILs) and critical current properties depending on growth conditions were demonstrated in ErBa2Cu3Oy films with Ba–(Nb,Er)–O nanorods. Despite the formation of nanorods in the matrix at all growth temperatures (Ts), Bose-glass-like vortex pinning was strengthened with decreasing Ts. In particular, the behavior of ILs can be understood in terms of the morphology of introduced nanorods, and Ts strongly affects the vortex states. Our present study suggests the importance of optimization of growth conditions in the production process of rare-earth-based coated conductors containing nanorods as vortex-pinning centers.
