Abstract: The best available intermolecular potential for helium by Aziz, Nain, Carley, Taylor, and McConville is shown here for the first time to have a 4He2 bound state. Two numerical analyses, namely, eigenvalue solution and effective range theory, are used to support this conclusion. Unlike usual chemically bound species, the binding energy of this very weakly bound level is found to be only 8.3×10−4 K, which is four orders of magnitude smaller than the potential well depth ε = 10.8 K. The scattering length for He+He collisions, determined from effective range theory, is used to calculate the elastic cross section in the very low energy limit. The results (1.878×105 Å2 for 4He+4He and 6.035×102 Å for 3He+3He) are consistent with measurements at the lowest velocities yet attained. In terms of the estimated uncertainties of the parameters of the potential of Aziz and co-workers, it is shown that it is very likely that a bound state of the 4He2 molecule does in fact exist.

Abstract: A model calculation of magnetic-field-induced perturbations and predissociations (scattering resonances) in 6Li7Li near dissociation is presented. The splitting of the 3Σ+u state by an external magnetic field yields field-dependent interactions (dominated by a curve crossing) between closely spaced, weakly bound high vibrational–rotational levels of the X 1Σ+g and 3Σ+u states near dissociation. Due to the symmetry of homonuclear molecules, there will be no such field-induced phenomena in the cases of 7Li2 and 6Li2. Since a bound–free–bound transition involving the 3Σ+u state of 7Li2 and high vibrational levels (v?36) in X 1Σ+g 6Li7Li and 7Li2 have recently been observed, experimental observation of these perturbations and predissociations should be feasible.

Abstract: Hyperfine interaction potential energy curves between two different ground state isotopic hydrogen atoms (H, D, or T) in the presence of an external magnetic field are constructed. It is found that the interaction between two isotopic hydrogen atoms is noncentral if relativistic effects are included. The eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the basis set consisting of electronic and nuclear quantum numbers ‖ms1, mIa; mS2, mIb≳. Unlike the zero-field case with degenerate potential curves, there are 24 and 16 distinct curves for the systems H–D (or D–T) and H–T, respectively. Sample results are given for a magnetic field of B = 100 000 G, in particular. Interesting features at the true crossings and the avoided crossings between those potential curves will be described. With these accurately calculated potential curves, the accurate study of inelastic spin-exchange scattering between two different spin-polarized atoms (H↑, D↑, or T↑) can now be carried out.

Abstract: Very high levels of n-type doping of AlxGa1−xN alloys were recently achieved by rf plasma-induced molecular-beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates and Si as a dopant. Electron concentrations were obtained up to 1.25×1020 cm−3 when the Al mole fraction was 50%, and 8.5×1019 cm−3 electrons were measured even when the Al mole fraction was 80%. Other material properties were determined by optical absorption, photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy measurements and high optical and morphological qualities were shown.
