Abstract: A charge density distribution scanning system is fabricated using an electrostatic probe, which utilizes DC voltage feedback principle to nullify the electric field between the probe and charged insulator surface. A two-layer structure pipe is designed to lower the surface potential after discharge. In this way, the surface potential distribution caused by the residual charge of leader discharge under the impulse application voltage up to 40 kV can be measured. In this Letter, the residual surface charge density distribution under 23.5 kV application voltage is given, and the numerical characteristics of residual charge in the leader channel and streamer channel are analyzed.

Abstract: The Pockels sensing system has been developed for directly measuring the potential and electric field distribution on a dielectric material. The system consists of an Ar ion laser, a Nd:YAG laser, a streak camera, and charge coupled device cameras. With this system, both the transient change in the potential distribution along a linear path of 50 mm in maximum length and the instantaneous two-dimensional potential distribution on a 25 mm square area can be measured simultaneously. The minimum resolution of this system reaches up to 0.2 ns. This article describes the transient change in potential distribution with a surface discharge in atmospheric air. The transient change of potential distribution with a propagating negative surface discharge in atmospheric air is measured with this system. The propagating direction component of the electric field Ex near the tip of the propagating streamer exceeds 3 MV/m.

Abstract: The effect of bromine (Br2) doping on the hole transfer properties in amorphous polyethylene (PE) oligomer is studied by utilizing a multi-scale computational approach without adopting any empirical models. The computational method comprises molecular dynamics simulations, quantum chemical calculations, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The electronic structure of the Br2/PE oligomer cluster and the ionization energies of Br2 and PE oligomer showed that no impurity states are introduced in the HOMO-LUMO gap of PE oligomers upon Br2 doping, i.e., holes tend to hop between PE oligomers instead of residing in Br2. Nevertheless, owing to the increase of electronic couplings between PE oligomers due to the occupied states of Br2, the hole mobility is increased by an order of magnitude with Br2 doping. In addition, the hole mobility activation energy was decreased upon Br2 doping, even though the activation energies of hole hopping rates remain the same. The computational results are consistent with experimental observations in literature and imply that the hole mobility in PE is increased by the bridge mediated hole transfer.

Abstract: A noncontact measurement of electric field is proposed based on the Kerr effect in gases. With the Kerr sensing technique, the electric field can be measured without causing any field disturbance. Kerr constants of gases are, however, very small compared with those of liquids, and this ideal technique has not been applied to electric field measurement in gas. In this study, a system is developed for a highly sensitive measurement of the small phase retardation caused by the Kerr electro-optic effect in gases. An optical phase modulation technique is effectively adopted to improve the sensitivity of the system. With this optical system, (i) dc stressed uniform electric fields in sulfur hexafluoride, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide gases at the pressure of 0.2–0.5 MPa and (ii) ac stressed uniform electric fields in atmospheric air are measured.
