Kurzfassung: We designed, constructed, and tested at 4.2 K (using two different low phase noise electrical pump generators) a cryogenic double-resonant parabridge motion transducer made out of niobium, whose electrical output was amplified by a two-stage metal-semiconductor field-effect transistor cryogenic amplifier. Most of the experimental results agreed well with the theoretical models. We were able to adjust the two electrical bridge resonant frequencies at the pump frequency, allowing us to obtain an electromechanical coupling as high as 0.054, and we successfully measured the mechanical Brownian motion of this transducer. In one case, we observed a dip in the electrical noise spectrum near the mechanical resonant frequency due to destructive interference between this noise and its ‘‘reflection’’ from the mechanical resonator. At the bottom of this dip, in a bandwidth of 0.7 Hz, we measured an equivalent displacement noise of 4 × 10−16 m/√Hz with a systematic error of less than 10%.

Kurzfassung: For detection of weak signals, and for use on ultralow temperature experiments, it would be useful to have a robust superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) amplifier that works below 1 K. We report on a test of a commercial SQUID amplifier that has lower noise than others we have tested, and works well while attached to a 50-mK chamber. The SQUID noise was improved only modestly when cooled from 4 K to 50 mK. The best energy resolution measured was 2200 ℏ.

Kurzfassung: The design, fabrication, and performance of an inductive transducer for a two-mode resonant mass gravitational radiation detector is described. The design of the transducer is based on a detailed noise model of the detector. The transducer combines a large dynamic mass, a large loaded quality factor, and transformer impedance matching to an integrated dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The transducer has been in continuous use on the Louisiana State University detector for two years. Its performance on the antenna is reported. The Q’s of the two resonant modes measure 6.7×106 and 2.3×106 at a transducer coupling coefficient of 0.74%. The electrical Q ranges from 2×105 to 9×105 and is dependent upon trapped magnetic flux in the transducer. The detector’s dominant noise source is the commercial SQUID amplifier, and not losses in the transducer. The predicted sensitivity of the detector equipped with our transducer agrees well with its measured burst strain sensitivity, h≊6×10−19. The detector’s gravitational burst strain sensitivity could be improved to 1.7×10−19 by coupling the transducer to a 200ℏ SQUID, while operating at 4 K.

Kurzfassung: Specific-heat and electron and nuclear magnetic resonance data have been taken on the free radical 1,3-bisdiphenylene-2-phenyl allyl at temperatures down to 1.3°K. The electron resonance spectrum of a single crystal of this free radical has also been examined. The data indicate magnetic ordering along linear chains below 6°K with a coupling between chains at 1.73°K. Impurities are demonstrated to play a large part in the magnetic behavior. The data are compared with theoretical predictions concerning linear antiferromagnetism.

Kurzfassung: The intrinsic response of Josephson junctions to microwave and far-infrared radiation is studied. Junctions are formed by pressing a Nb or Nb-Ti pointed wire onto a Nb thin film which in turn is pressed against the open end of a waveguide. Electromagnetic radiation is applied through the back of the film so that only the wave magnetic field is coupled to the junction. The change of the dc Josephson current is monitored at different levels of microwave power over a frequency range from 22 to 105 GHz. The dependence of the responsivity of these currents on film thickness over a range from 50 to 500 Å is studied. The observed responsivity agrees very well with that predicted by theory. Higher responsivity is observed for thinner films and lower microwave frequencies. The observed responsivity of a 50-Å film junction at 22 GHz is (6±3) ×10−2 V/W. To facilitate comparison of our results with other experiments, a more conventional coupling configuration in which the wave electric field rather than the wave magnetic field is coupled to the junction is studied. The results are comparable with other experiments with the responsivity in the E field coupling case 106 times larger than in the B field coupling configuration. We demonstrate that for successful use of simple Josephson junction detectors in the microwave and millimeter region it seems crucial to impedance match the junctions to the radiation source, probably by making them a part of a resonant structure.

Kurzfassung: We show that it is possible to construct a quantum-limited gravitational wave antenna if it is operated at 0.05 K. We assume a dc SQUID readout of a Paik transducer. We take account of the correlations between the SQUID voltage and current noise and the SQUID dynamic impedance. We derive expressions for the back action of the SQUID on the antenna, for the noise properties of the system, and the sensitivity and matching conditions.

Kurzfassung: A simple apparatus for measuring relative thermal expansions down to very low temperatures is described. The thermal expansions are given for a number of commercial epoxy resins. The effect of loading epoxies with fused quartz powder is described. Several epoxies are found to match the thermal expansions of the common metals.
