Abstract: The Mn2+ emission of ZnS:Mn nanoparticles was enhanced by a simple procedure. 3-Mercaptopropionic acid was used as a complexing agent in the synthesis of ZnS:Mn nanoparticles. Sulfydryl groups of 3-mercaptopropionic acid acted as bridging groups, to form composites of ZnS:Mn and Au nanoparticles. The peak wavelength of Au surface plasmons was red-shifted by 5 nm upon compositing. The intensity of Mn2+ emission at 590 nm because of the 4T1-6A1 transition was enhanced by 469% from the effects of the surface plasmon resonance. The enhancement was greatly influenced by the ratio of ZnS:Mn and Au. Enhancement was primarily attributed to localized surface plasmon resonance on the Au nanoparticle surface.

Abstract: The authors report on high transverse magnetic (TM)-mode responsivity in a waveguided germanium Schottky-barrier metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector on silicon-on-insulator substrate for operating wavelength at 1550 nm. The employed aluminum interdigitated electrodes act as a one-dimensional rectangular grating above the depletion layer. By means of properly designed finger dimensions, surface plasmon polariton resonances can be excited at the interface of metal and silicon interfacial layer due to grating coupling. The resulting strong field intensities reach into active region, enabling high absorption under TM injection. At a voltage of 1 V, the TM-mode photocurrent is measured over three times than that of transverse electric mode, in spite of the relatively larger TM insertion loss in the silicon waveguide.

Abstract: We report a robust, compact, and transportable optical clock (TOC-729-2) based on a trapped single 40Ca+ ion with a systematic uncertainty of 1.1×10−17, which is limited by the black-body radiation shift uncertainty at room temperature. By comparing it with the previous transportable optical clock (TOC-729-1) similar but completely independent, the instability was measured to be better than 1.2×10−14/τ. Benefiting from the modular and integrated design, this TOC was constructed in a volume of ∼0.33 m3 excluding the controlling electronics in 19-in. racks. After being moved ∼1200 km away by express delivery, the single-ion signal was restored within 24 h. With the TOC uptime of 92% in 35-day period, the absolute frequency of the 729 nm transition of 40Ca+ was measured using a satellite link to International Atomic Time (TAI) to provide traceability to the SI second, and the result is 411 042 129 776 400.15(22) Hz, corresponding to a relative uncertainty of 5.3×10−16.

Abstract: In this paper, the dynamics of elementary cellular automata rule 42 is investigated in the bi-infinite symbolic sequence space. Rule 42, a member of Wolfram’s class II which was said to be simply as periodic before, actually defines a chaotic global attractor; that is, rule 42 is topologically mixing on its global attractor and possesses the positive topological entropy. Therefore, rule 42 is chaotic in the sense of both Li-Yorke and Devaney. Meanwhile, the characteristic function and the basin tree diagram of rule 42 are explored for some finite length of binary strings, which reveal its Bernoulli characteristics. The method presented in this work is also applicable to studying the dynamics of other rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules of the elementary cellular automata.

Abstract: Silicon bulk etching is an important part of micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology. In this work, a novel etching method is proposed based on the vapor from tetramethy-lammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution heated up to boiling point. The monocrystalline silicon wafer is positioned over the solution surface and can be anisotropically etched by the produced vapor. This etching method does not rely on the expensive vacuum equipment used in dry etching. Meanwhile, it presents several advantages like low roughness, high etching rate and high uniformity compared with the conventional wet etching methods. The etching rate and roughness can reach 2.13 µm/min and 1.02 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the diaphragm structure and Al-based pattern on the non-etched side of wafer can maintain intact without any damage during the back-cavity fabrication. Finally, an etching mechanism has been proposed to illustrate the observed experimental phenomenon. It is suggested that there is a water thin film on the etched surface during the solution evaporation. It is in this water layer that the ionization and etching reaction of TMAH proceed, facilitating the desorption of hydrogen bubble and the enhancement of molecular exchange rate. This new etching method is of great significance in the low-cost and high-quality micro-electromechanical system industrial fabrication.

Abstract: In this work, we used time-sliced ion velocity imaging to study the photodissociation dynamics of MgO at 193 nm. Three dissociation pathways are found through the speed and angular distributions of magnesium. One pathway is the one-photon excitation of MgO(X1Σ+) to MgO(G1Π) followed by spin-orbit coupling between the G1Π, 33Π and 15Π states, and finally dissociated to the Mg(3Pu)+O(3Pg) along the 15Π surface. The other two pathways are one-photon absorption of MgO(A1Π) state to MgO(G1Π) and MgO(41Π) state to dissociate into Mg(3Pu)+O(3Pg) and Mg(1Sg)+O(1Sg), respectively. The anisotropy parameters of the dissociation pathways are related to the lifetime of the vibrational energy levels and the coupling of rotational and vibronic spin-orbit states. The total kinetic energy analysis gives D0(Mg−O)=21645±50 cm−1.

Abstract: Cs4PbBr6 crystals have been synthesized by an ultrasonication-assisted trace amount polar solvent method. The prepared green Cs4PbBr6 material was found to have high photoluminescence (PL) brightness and 10 ns PL lifetime. The prepared green light emitting device can achieve the maximum brightness of 3.8 × 109 cd/m2, which is nearly 100 times higher than a wick. The white light emitting device based on Cs4PbBr6 crystals has better performance than commercial products, which can cover 32.3% of the color gamut and achieves 107.3% coverage for International Commission on Illumination (CIE)1931 and 84.8% coverage for CIE1976.

Abstract: A distributed point polarizable model (DPP2) for water, with explicit terms for charge penetration, induction, and charge transfer, is introduced. The DPP2 model accurately describes the interaction energies in small and large water clusters and also gives an average internal energy per molecule and radial distribution functions of liquid water in good agreement with experiment. A key to the success of the model is its accurate description of the individual terms in the n-body expansion of the interaction energies.

Abstract: The drain current fluctuation of ungated AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) measured in different fluids at a drain-source voltage of 0.5 V was investigated. The HEMTs with metal on the gate region showed good current stability in deionized water, while a large fluctuation in drain current was observed for HEMTs without gate metal. The fluctuation in drain current for the HEMTs without gate metal was observed and calculated as standard deviation from a real-time measurement in air, deionized water, ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, ethylene glycol, 1,2-butanediol, and glycerol. At room temperature, the fluctuation in drain current for the HEMTs without gate metal was found to be relevant to the dipole moment and the viscosity of the liquids. A liquid with a larger viscosity showed a smaller fluctuation in drain current. The viscosity-dependent fluctuation of the drain current was ascribed to the Brownian motions of the liquid molecules, which induced a variation in the surface dipole of the gate region. This study uncovers the causes of the fluctuation in drain current of HEMTs in fluids. The results show that the AlGaN/GaN HEMTs may be used as sensors to measure the viscosity of liquids within a certain range of viscosity.

Abstract: An omnidirectional structural color based on the metal-SiOx-metal stack structure is proposed, which can present the same perceived color for a broad range of incidence angles. The tunable structural color can be obtained with adjustable intermediate dielectric layer by simply adjusting the deposition condition, especially the oxygen flow rate during the deposition processes. The resonance condition can be satisfied across the whole visible light region with this special dielectric. The strong absorption caused by the resonance within the metal-SiOx-metal structure accounts for the efficient spectral filtering feature, and the constant phase shift within the dielectric layer leads to angle insensitivity of this color filter. This simple color tuning method for omnidirectional structural colors can have a great potential in various applications such as displaying, imaging, colorful decoration, anti-counterfeiting and so forth.
