    Abstract: The pencil-drawn sensor is expected to enable a simple, low-cost, and reproducible paper-based sensor platform for widely deployed wireless environmental monitoring of NO2. Herein, we demonstrated a rapid prototyping of chemiresistor-type NO2 sensor by mechanical abrasion of an 8B pencil to form a stripe of uniform graphitic coating on printed silver interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). The Ag IDEs not only offer a low resistance but also provide the assembly of Ag nanoparticles into exfoliated graphene sheets for the paper-based NO2 gas sensors in order to realise much higher sensitivity and better reproducibility comparing with pencil-drawn sensors directly on weighing paper.

    Abstract: We have investigated the effect of the Pt composition on the spin–orbit torque in a (Fe0.8Mn0.2)1−xPtx single-layer ferromagnet. We observed that while the field-like torque decreases and even reverses sign with increasing the Pt composition, the damping-like torque increases monotonically and reaches 0.99 Oe/(1010 A/m2) in a single-layer (Fe0.8Mn0.2)0.52Pt0.48 film. The results corroborate the anomalous Hall effect and surface spin rotation model presented previously, and the relative ratio between the damping-like and field-like torques can be qualitatively understood as the relative phase change in spin-conserving and spin-flip scattering.

    Abstract: We report on the study of charge-spin conversion in sputter-deposited WTex films using harmonic Hall measurements. Strong damping-like (DL) spin–orbit torque (SOT) is observed in WTex thin films with the largest SOT efficiency of 0.67 × 105 Ω−1 m−1 at a WTex thickness of 5 nm, which quickly decreases to around zero as the thickness increases to 10 nm. In comparison, the field-like SOT is around one order smaller than the DL SOT. Making use of the large DL SOT, we realize efficient current-induced perpendicular magnetization switching in WTex/Ti/CoFeB multilayers. Our findings suggest the great potential of sputter-deposited WTex in spintronics applications.

    Abstract: Recently, we have demonstrated the presence of spin-orbit torque in FeMn/Pt multilayers which, in combination with the anisotropy field, is able to rotate its magnetization consecutively from 0° to 360° without any external field. Here, we report on an investigation of the static and dynamic magnetic properties of FeMn/Pt multilayers using the combined techniques of magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance, inverse spin Hall effect, and spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements. The FeMn/Pt multilayer was found to exhibit ferromagnetic properties, and its temperature dependence of saturation magnetization can be fitted well using a phenomenological model by including a finite distribution in Curie temperature due to subtle thickness variations across the multilayer samples. The non-uniformity in static magnetic properties is also manifested in the ferromagnetic resonance spectra, which typically exhibit a broad resonance peak. A damping parameter of around 0.106 is derived from the frequency dependence of ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, which is comparable to the reported values for other types of Pt-based multilayers. Clear inverse spin Hall signals and spin Hall magnetoresistance have been observed in all samples below the Curie temperature, which corroborate the strong spin-orbit torque effect observed previously.

    Abstract: (Anti-)ferroelectricity in complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible binary oxides have attracted considerable research interest recently. Here, we show that by using substrate-induced strain, the orthorhombic phase and the desired ferroelectricity could be achieved in ZrO2 thin films. Our theoretical analyses suggest that the strain imposed on the ZrO2 (111) film by the TiN/MgO (001) substrate would energetically favor the tetragonal (t) and orthorhombic (o) phases over the monoclinic (m) phase of ZrO2, and the compressive strain along certain ⟨11-2⟩ directions may further stabilize the o-phase. Experimentally ZrO2 thin films are sputtered onto the MgO (001) substrates buffered by epitaxial TiN layers. ZrO2 thin films exhibit t- and o-phases, which are highly (111)-textured and strained, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Both polarization-electric field (P-E) loops and corresponding current responses to voltage stimulations measured with appropriate applied fields reveal the ferroelectric sub-loop behavior of the ZrO2 films at certain thicknesses, confirming that the ferroelectric o-phase has been developed in the strained (111)-textured ZrO2 films. However, further increasing the applied field leads to the disappearance of ferroelectric hysteresis, the possible reasons of which are discussed.

    Abstract: Recently, we have developed a spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) sensor using the spin–orbit torque effective field as the built-in linearization mechanism, which allows us to achieve a linear, zero-offset, and low-noise magnetic field sensor without any dedicated magnetic bias. In this work, we examine the response of the SMR sensor to a time-varying magnetic field and demonstrate that its inherent frequency selectivity makes it uniquely suited for applications in eddy current testing. By applying a square wave current to both the coil and the sensor, and with the help of principal component analysis, we show that it is possible to detect surface cracks on an aluminum plate with dimensions down to 0.2 mm, without the need to use any sophisticated detection circuitry.

    Abstract: Ferroelectric properties and ferroelectric resistive switching (FE-RS) of sputtered Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) thin films were investigated. The HZO films with the orthorhombic phase were obtained without capping or post-deposition annealing. Ferroelectricity was demonstrated by polarization-voltage (P-V) hysteresis loops measured in a positive-up negative-down manner and piezoresponse force microscopy. However, defects such as oxygen vacancies caused the films to become leaky. The observed ferroelectricity and semiconducting characteristics led to the FE-RS effect. The FE-RS effect may be explained by a polarization modulated trap-assisted tunneling model. Our study not only provides a facile route to develop ferroelectric HfO2-based thin films but also explores their potential applications in FE-RS memories.

    Abstract: A data mining approach based on compressed data fusion is developed to extract a clean signal from highly noisy data and it has been successfully applied to flow measurement using fast-responding pressure-sensitive paint (fast PSP). In this approach, spatially resolved but noisy full-field data are fused with clean but scattered data to reconstruct full-field clean data. The fusion process is accomplished based on a compressed sensing algorithm, which has shown significantly improved performance compared with low-dimensional analysis. This is because, in low-dimensional analysis such as proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), the selection criteria of proper POD modes for reconstruction are usually based on subjective observation and the mode coefficients can be severely distorted by noise, which restricts the applications of this method to complicated flow phenomena and leads to a low-quality reconstruction. The solutions to these two problems can be expressed via mathematical optimization by determining the optimal coefficients to reconstruct clean data using the most relevant POD modes. Here, compressed sensing is used as a suitable solution to explore the sparse representation of scattered clean data based on the POD modes obtained from noisy full-field data. A high-quality reconstruction can be obtained using the optimized coefficients. The new method is first demonstrated by using fabricated patterns, demonstrating a reduction of 75% in the reconstruction error compared with POD analysis. It is thereafter successfully applied to recover the unsteady pressure field induced by a cylinder wake flow at low speed. Fast PSP measurement and microphones are used to obtain full-field but noisy pressure field data and scattered but clean data, respectively. In the cases of single and step cylinders, the reconstruction errors are approximately 5% and 25%, respectively, and the accuracy of reconstruction depends on the low dimensionality of the flow phenomena and the total number of microphone sensors. The current technique provides a reliable method to recover clean signals from strong noise, with significant potential for applications to flow measurement, control, and monitoring.
