    Abstract: Optical controls provided by lasers are the most important and essential techniques in trapped ion and cold atom systems. It is crucial to increase the optical accessibility of the setup to enhance these optical capabilities. Here, we present the design and construction of a new segmented-blade ion trap integrated with a compact glass vacuum cell, in place of the conventional bulky metal vacuum chamber. The distance between the ion and four outside surfaces of the glass cell is 15 mm, which enables us to install four high-numerical-aperture (NA) lenses (with two NA ⩽ 0.32 lenses and two NA ⩽ 0.66 lenses) in two orthogonal transverse directions, while leaving enough space for laser beams in the oblique and longitudinal directions. The high optical accessibility in multiple directions allows the application of small laser spots for addressable Raman operations, programmable optical tweezer arrays, and efficient fluorescence collection simultaneously. We have successfully loaded and cooled a string of 174Yb+ and 171Yb+ ions in the trap, which verifies the trapping stability. This compact high-optical-access trap setup not only can be used as an extendable module for quantum information processing but also facilitates experimental studies on quantum chemistry in a cold hybrid ion-atom system.

    Abstract: Theoretical studies on the electronic and geometric structures, the trend in DNA-binding affinities as well as the the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of a series of water-soluble Ru(II) methylimidazole complexes, i.e. [Ru(MeIm)4iip]2+ (1) (MeIm=1-methylimidazole, iip=2-(1H-imidazo-4-group)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10]phenanthroline), [Ru(MeIm)4tip] 2+ (2) (tip=2-(thiophene-2-group)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline), and [Ru(MeIm)42ntz]2+ (3) (2ntz=2-(2-nitro-1,3-thiazole-5-group)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10]phenanthroline), were carried out using the density functional theory (DFT). The electronic structures of these Ru(II) complexes were analyzed on the basis of their geometric structures optimized in aqueous solution, and the trend in the DNA-binding constants (Kb) was reasonably explained. The results show that the replacement of imidazole ligand by thiophene ligand can effectively improve the DNA-binding affinity of the complex. Meanwhile, it was found that introducing the stronger electronegative N atom and NO2 group on terminal loop of intercalative ligand can obviously reduce the complex's LUMO and HOMO-LUMO gap energies. Based on these findings, the designed complex [Ru(MeIm)42ntz] 2+ (3) can be expected to have the greatest Kb value in complexes 1–3. In addition, the structure-activity relationships and antitumor mechanism were also carefully discussed, and the antimetastatic activity of the designed complex 3 was predicted. Finally, the electronic absorption spectra of this series of complexes in aqueous solution were calculated, simulated and assigned using DFT/TDDFT methods as well as conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM), and were in good agreement with the experimental results.

    Abstract: In situ transient synchrotron Laue x-ray diffraction based on high-energy and broadband x rays under high strain-rate tensile loading was developed at a superconducting wiggler beamline at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility. A split-Hopkinson tensile bar is utilized to realize this dynamic loading condition, while the transient Laue x-ray diffraction captures the transient internal structure of monocrystalline materials. Plastic deformation of a monocrystalline nickel specimen was investigated to prove the ability of this instrumentation in the characterization of a dynamic response of monocrystalline materials during a high strain-rate impact process with 5 µs time resolution.

    Abstract: The spreading of an infectious disease can trigger human behavior responses to the disease, which in turn plays a crucial role on the spreading of epidemic. In this study, to illustrate the impacts of the human behavioral responses, a new class of individuals, SF, is introduced to the classical susceptible-infected-recovered model. In the model, SF state represents that susceptible individuals who take self-initiate protective measures to lower the probability of being infected, and a susceptible individual may go to SF state with a response rate when contacting an infectious neighbor. Via the percolation method, the theoretical formulas for the epidemic threshold as well as the prevalence of epidemic are derived. Our finding indicates that, with the increasing of the response rate, the epidemic threshold is enhanced and the prevalence of epidemic is reduced. The analytical results are also verified by the numerical simulations. In addition, we demonstrate that, because the mean field method neglects the dynamic correlations, a wrong result based on the mean field method is obtained—the epidemic threshold is not related to the response rate, i.e., the additional SF state has no impact on the epidemic threshold.

    Abstract: We report the third-order optical nonlinearity of ferroelectric thin films of Mn doped Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 using Z-scan measurement with femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm. The nonlinear refraction index and two-photon absorption coefficient are measured to be 3.0×10−4 cm2/GW and 1.7 cm/GW, respectively, which are about one order of magnitude larger than those of the undoped Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 thin films. The enhancement is attributed to the acceptor behavior of Mn ions dopant. The figure of merit, T, defined by T=βλ/n2, was calculated to be 0.44, less than 1. The results indicate that the thin films have great potential applications in nonlinear photonic devices.
