Kurzfassung: In order to investigate the growth mechanism of diamond thin films, the in situ optical emission spectra of direct current (dc) arc discharge plasma, including the spatial distributions and different CH4/H2 ratios, have been measured during the growth processes of diamond thin films prepared by the dc arc discharge plasma chemical vapor deposition method. The results show that there are a great number of atomic hydrogens in the arc discharge plasma. This is the key factor for the growth of diamond films with a high rate and high quality. In addition, the effects of the CH4/H2 ratio on the quality of diamond films are discussed in detail in this letter.

Kurzfassung: Low-frequency forbidden bandgap (LFB) in solid-fluid superlattice (SFSL) provides a novel degree of freedom to control the propagation of low frequency acoustic waves. However, its narrow angle range seriously restricts its practical applications. To engineer the angle range of LFB, the transmission coefficient of a cascade of multiple 1D superlattices was calculated using the transfer matrix method and also verified by finite element simulations. It was found that the LFB with ultra-wide angle range can be created using only 4 cells of a two-phased cascade structure and can be adjusted by changing the solid filling fraction of each sub-SFSL. By introducing two or more 1D superlattices into the layered cascade structure, the LFB with multiple angle ranges and/or ultra-wide angle range can be engineered for low frequency acoustic waves whose wavelengths are much larger than the lattice constant. Such acoustic low-frequency forbidden bandgap materials are useful for making perfect acoustic low-frequency filters with broad bandwidth in selective angle ranges, which are useful in subwavelength acoustic devices.

Kurzfassung: Fourier-transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to study C60 thin films which have been annealed for various times. The results show that the intermolecular interactions between C60 molecules in the films affect the vibrational modes. The 1428 cm−1 mode is the most sensitive mode to the interaction. A vibrational mode at about 669 cm−1 appears in the IR spectra of the films and increases with the annealing time; this mode represents the intermolecular interactions between the C60 molecules in the films. The peak position shift and the relative height of 1428 cm−1 mode increase with the increase of the 669 cm−1 mode peak height. The mechanism of the changes of vibrational modes has been discussed.

Kurzfassung: The substituted Mn2Sb-based ferrimagnetic (FIM) alloys by other elements have attracted much attention recently due to excellent magneto-functional properties. However, almost all investigations have been concentrated on the first-order phase transition between antiferromagnetic and FIM state. In this work, a large topological Hall effect (THE) associated with the spin reorientation transition is observed in the Mn2Sb0.9Bi0.1 alloy. Strikingly, the sign reversal of topological Hall resistivity (ρxyT) is found before and after the SRT temperature TSR ∼260 K. Above the TSR, a positive ρxyT is observed, e.g., ∼0.52 μΩ cm at 320 K. By reducing temperature to 275 K, the ρxyT value decreases to ∼0.42 μΩ cm. It is interesting that, however, the negative ρxyT value is found below the TSR, e.g., ∼−0.66 μΩ cm at 175 K. The physical mechanism about this peculiar THE is discussed in Bi-doped Mn2Sb-based alloys.

Kurzfassung: Using a model where a fraction of carbon dangling bonds on the growth surface are saturated by hydrogen, the surface energies of chemical-vapor-deposited diamond crystals during the preparation process have been calculated. The results show that the surface energies increase with the increasing substrate temperature, and the surface energy-temperature curves of the three most energetically favored crystal planes, (100), (110), and (111), intersect at a critical substrate temperature. Then, the changes of predominant facets in the surface morphology from {100} to {111} with the increasing substrate temperature can be interpreted. Furthermore, it is found that the surface energies of diamond are lower than that of graphite in the chemical-vapor-deposition process of diamond.

Kurzfassung: MgO/NiFe/MgO trilayers, the new development in highly sensitive anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensor film materials, exhibit severely reduced magnetoresistance ratios at small NiFe thicknesses. By inserting ultrathin NiFe(І) layers into the top and bottom MgO layers of MgO/NiFe/MgO trilayers, films with a structure of MgO/NiFe(І)/MgO/NiFe/MgO/NiFe(І)/MgO were designed and synthesized. The AMR value can be significantly enhanced for thin NiFe films due to the improved specular reflections of electrons at both NiFe/MgO interfaces. For a thin NiFe film with the structure of MgO/NiFe(І)(1.5 nm)/MgO/NiFe(5 nm)/MgO/NiFe(І)(1.5 nm)/MgO, the AMR value was greatly enhanced to as high as 2.71%, an increase of 37% over MgO/NiFe(5 nm)/MgO film.

Kurzfassung: The well-crystallized cubic boron nitride (c-BN) films have been prepared on polycrystalline Ni substrates using a hot filament assisted rf plasma chemical vapor deposition method. X-ray diffraction showed that high quality c-BN films had been deposited without hexagonal BN (h-BN) or amorphous BN codeposition. Both (111) and (100) faces were observed in scanning electron microscopy images. These results suggested that Ni had catalyst effects on the nucleation and the growth of c-BN phase and inhibited the formation of h-BN.

Kurzfassung: The immunity and survivability in a strong electromagnetic environment make the Faraday Rotation (FR) method irreplaceable for measuring pulsed magnetic fields. We present a dual-channel FR method that achieves more stable and precise measurement and more applicable magnetic field types than the conventional FR method. By splitting the modulated light into two components, the ratio of the two components is transformed into a tangent function with two analyzers at a relative 45°. The use of terbium gallium garnet, which has a significant magneto-optical effect, as a magneto-optical medium enables higher sensitivity for measurement. We have successfully measured the variation in magnetic flux density of the capacitively driven pulsed magnetic field.

Kurzfassung: Textured cubic boron nitride (c-BN) films have been deposited on (220) oriented crystallized polycrystalline nickel substrate by a hot filament assisted rf plasma chemical vapor deposition method. X-ray diffraction shows that the films are (220) preferentially grown, the peak ratio of (220) to the main peak [i.e., the (111) peak] is about 5.2. The scanning electron microscopy images exhibit regular grain shapes. Most of the grains are rectangular, also indicating the (220) growth. The grain size is about 5 μm. The well-matched Ni lattice with c-BN, the catalytic effect of Ni, and the appropriate rf bias are considered to be the key factors in the textured growth.

Kurzfassung: Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by focused femtosecond laser irradiation of PdCl2 dissolved in ethanol. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that Pd NPs show certain crystalline microstructure, and the average diameter is 3.4 nm with narrow size distribution from 2.0 to 6.0 nm. The nonlinear optical absorption and refraction of Pd NPs solution were investigated with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear absorption of Pd NPs is saturable at low intensity of 3.28×1011 W/m2 but it is changed to reverse saturable with the intensity increased to 7.96×1011 W/m2, which accordingly indicates the nonlinear refraction is changed from self-defocusing to self-focusing. The transition of the nonlinear absorption with the increase in pulse intensity is analyzed by an empirical model which includes mostly saturable absorption (SA) and two-photon absorption (TPA). The intensity of saturable Is is obtained, along with TPA coefficient β. SA and TPA are both originated from the interband transition between the d band and s-p conduction band. The SA possess less occupied density of states in the ground state and less unoccupied density of states in the excited state than that of TPA, so the TPA dominates the nonlinear absorption when the pulse intensity is high, leading to as-observed transition from SA to TPA. The refraction variation with increase in pulse intensity is attributed to the interband transition of electrons from d band to s-p conduction band in the Pd NPs.
