Abstract: Third-order optical nonlinearities of graphene from monolayer to multilayers were investigated in the femtosecond regime, and the contribution of interlayer coupling to the nonlinearities was studied. The nonlinear refractive index γ of the order of 10−9 cm2/W and the nonlinear absorption coefficient β of 10−6 cm/W were obtained. By systematically investigating the nonlinear optical properties with the number of layers and comparing the coupling graphene with the decoupling superimposed graphene, we found that the coupling of interlayers has large effect upon the nonlinear refraction. These results provide an effective approach for developing graphene-based nonlinear photonic devices.

Abstract: Here, we report detailed strain mapping analysis at heterointerfaces of a new multiferroic complex oxide Bi3Fe2Mn2Ox(BFMO322) supercell and related layered structures. The state-of-the-art aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-corrected STEM) and the modified geometric phase analysis (GPA) have been used to characterize the self-assembled transitional layers, misfit defects, and, in particular, the biaxial lattice strain distributions. We found that not only a sufficient lattice misfit is required through substrate selection and to be preserved in initial coherent epilayer growth, but also an appropriate interfacial reconstruction is crucial for triggering the growth of the new BFMO322 supercell structure. The observation of new transitional interfacial phases behaving like coherent film layers within the critical thickness challenges the conventional understanding in existing epitaxial growth model.

Abstract: We study the effect of heterogeneous neuron and information transmission delay on stochastic resonance of scale-free neuronal networks. For this purpose, we introduce the heterogeneity to the specified neuron with the highest degree. It is shown that in the absence of delay, an intermediate noise level can optimally assist spike firings of collective neurons so as to achieve stochastic resonance on scale-free neuronal networks for small and intermediate αh, which plays a heterogeneous role. Maxima of stochastic resonance measure are enhanced as αh increases, which implies that the heterogeneity can improve stochastic resonance. However, as αh is beyond a certain large value, no obvious stochastic resonance can be observed. If the information transmission delay is introduced to neuronal networks, stochastic resonance is dramatically affected. In particular, the tuned information transmission delay can induce multiple stochastic resonance, which can be manifested as well-expressed maximum in the measure for stochastic resonance, appearing every multiple of one half of the subthreshold stimulus period. Furthermore, we can observe that stochastic resonance at odd multiple of one half of the subthreshold stimulus period is subharmonic, as opposed to the case of even multiple of one half of the subthreshold stimulus period. More interestingly, multiple stochastic resonance can also be improved by the suitable heterogeneous neuron. Presented results can provide good insights into the understanding of the heterogeneous neuron and information transmission delay on realistic neuronal networks.

Abstract: Two-dimensional, oblique detonations induced by a wedge are simulated using the reactive Euler equations with a detailed chemical reaction model. The focus of this study is on the oblique shock-to-detonation transition in a stoichiometric hydrogen-air mixture. A combustible, gas mixture at low pressure and high temperature, corresponding to the realistic, inflow conditions applied in oblique detonation wave engines, is presented in this study. At practical flight conditions, the present numerical results illustrate that oblique detonation initiation is achieved through a smooth transition from a curved shock, which differs from the abrupt transition depicted in the previous studies. The formation mechanism of this smooth transition is discussed and a quantitative analysis is carried out by defining a characteristic length for the initiation process. The dependence of the initiation length on different parameters including the wedge angle, flight Mach number, and inflow Mach number is discussed. Despite the hypothetical nature of the simulation configuration, the present numerical study uses parameters we deem relevant to practical conditions and provides important observations for which future investigations can benefit from in reaching toward a rigorous theory of the formation and self-sustenance of oblique detonation waves.
