Abstract: In this letter, we report an important issue in nanoparticle synthesis by the “bottom up” approach. By controlling the pH of the starting mixture of the salts we have been successful in obtaining the desired conductivity of nanosized nickel ferrite. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the size, structure, and morphology of the nanoferrites. All the materials are typical semiconducting oxides whose conductivity depends on the pH of the starting salt solution. Direct current and alternating current conductivity studies coupled with thermoelectric measurements and the resultant activation energies help us to propose the mechanism of conductivity in these ferrites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies are indicative of Ni3+ presence in p-type ferrite. The n- and p-type conductivity in these materials is attributed to the hopping due to the presence of Fe3+ and Ni3+ ions, respectively.

Abstract: The effect of confinement of hemoglobin molecules on photoacoustic (PA) signal is studied experimentally. The PA amplitudes for samples with suspended red blood cells (SRBCs) and hemolyzed red blood cells (HRBCs) were found to be comparable at each hematocrit for 532 nm illumination. The difference between the corresponding amplitudes increased with increasing hematocrit for 1064 nm irradiation. For example, the PA amplitude for the SRBCs was about 260% higher than that of the HRBCs at 40% hematocrit. This observation may help to develop a PA method detecting hemolysis noninvasively.

Abstract: A strong piezoelectric effect and a large spontaneous polarization allow one to incorporate a large electric field ( & gt;106 V/cm) and high sheet charge ( & gt;1013 cm−2) without doping in the AlGaN/GaN heterostructure. Theoretical studies are done to examine how polarization effects can be exploited to design metal–AlGaN/GaN tunnel junctions. We find that with a proper choice of AlGaN thickness undoped junctions can be made with very high metal to two-dimensional electron gas tunneling. Thus, a Schottky junction can be converted to a tunnel junction without doping. The tunneling probabilities approach those produced in a system doped at ∼4×1019 cm−3. This work suggests that very interesting tunnel junctions can be made from undoped AlGaN/GaN heterostructures.
