Notes: Shoot dry weight, leaf area, leaf lamina dry weight and N-fixation of L. uliginosus cv. Grasslands 4705 were compared with those of T. repens S184 over a 90-day period frotn sowing, in pots in a greenhouse. Three P and three pH levels were imposed and there were three destructive harvests at 30-day intervals. N-fixation was estimated by the acetylene reduction technique prior to the last harvest. L. uliginosus had higjier means than T. repens for all characters measured under all treatments at all harvests. Large increases in shoot weight and leaf area were associated with addition of P, particularly with the first increment of P to L. uliginosus. High P reduced the contribution of lamina to total shoot weight in T. repens more than in L. uliginosus at the second harvest. Raising pH increased shoot weight and leaf area in both species.N-fixation was low in both species at low pH and low P. This was increased by addition of P, a smaller quantity being necessary for the same response in L. uliginosus compared with T. repens. At the higher P levels, the high pH gave rise to lower N-fixation than at the medium pH.Results are discussed in relation to field trials of other workers and the possible suitability of L. uliginosus for low fertility upland conditions.

Notes: The clinical, microscopical, immunocytochemical and ultrastructural features of five cases of benign mesenchymal proliferative lesions of the urinary bladder, mimicking sarcoma, are presented. Four of the five patients are alive and disease-free following diagnosis, an interval ranging from 9 months to 9 years, mean 4 years. A fifth patient, who had a pseudosarcomatous stromal response adjacent to a urinary transitional cell carcinoma, now has invasive transitional cell carcinoma. The lesions revealed a striking microscopical, immunocytochemical and ultrastructural similarity to nodular fasciitis, suggesting the lesions represented a bizarre mesenchymal proliferative response to inflammation.

Notes: The distance between the tip of a tracheal tube and the carina was measured in twenty five patients who required tracheal intubation and artificial ventilation of the lungs. Two methods of evaluation of this distance—limited fibre-optic bronchoscopy and chest X-ray—were compared. There was no significant difference between the distance measured by either method. The advantages of checking tracheal tube placement by fibre-optic bronchoscopy are discussed.

Description: The eastern boundary of the Caroline plate, in the western equatorial Pacific, is composed of three structural provinces distinguished primarily on the basis of morphology. Each province shows evidence for convergence between the Caroline and Pacific plates though the structural style varies considerably between each province. Most notably, the sense of underthrusting appears to change along the boundary at about 3°N. To the south, at the Mussau System, Caroline lithosphere underthrusts beneath the Mussau Ridge (which is part of the Pacific plate), while to the north the Caroline plate appears to overthrust the Pacific plate. Recently collected seismic reflection profiles across each province documents the structural changes along and across strike of the Caroline-Pacific plate boundary. With this information, we estimate that a minimum of approximately 4 km of crustal shortening has occurred at about 5°N due to convergence of the two plates. Further to the south (about 2°N), simple gravity models suggest that about 10 km of Caroline lithosphere lies beneath the present-day Pacific plate. Using a previously determined pole of rotation describing Caroline-Pacific relative motion (Weissel and Anderson, 1978), we grossly estimate the duration of the convergence between these two plates at about one million years. It is suggested that variation in the convergence rate along the plate boundary provides the primary control on the variation of structural deformation observed between provinces; however, favorable thermal conditions are factors that are considered. If the eastern boundary of the Caroline plate is a region of incipient though perhaps transient subduction, as we postulate, then the geophysical and geological evidence presented can constrain models on the initiation of subduction.

Description: Case A 66-year-old woman was admitted with severe pancreatitis of unknown aetiology. Medical history disclosed insulin-dependent diabetes. She was treated conservatively with fluid and electrolyte correction. The patient was haemodynamically stable throughout the disease course. On day 4 she developed a paralytic ileus. Parenteral nutrition was initiated. Gradually, the ileus resolved. Enteral feeding was resumed on day 13 via a nasojejunal feeding tube. Over the following days, the patient developed watery diarrhoea. PCR and cultures failed to demonstrate a microbial cause. Suddenly, at day 21, the patient excreted per anus a 49 cm long vermiform soft strand ( figure 1 ). Question What is your diagnosis? See page 524 for answer Answer From question on page 493 Macroscopically, the excreted strand had a central lumen ( figure 2 ). Histological examination showed a completely necrotic, full-thickness colonic cast. All layers of the bowel wall, including...
