Summary The present study has thus far yielded the following noteworthy results: 1) In addition to the occurrence of biologically known elements (K, Ca, Na, Mg, P), all of our spectrograms taken after various preliminary treatments, show the presence of Al and Cu in the brain. No information is available, as yet, concerning the relative and absolute amounts of this occurrence in the separate regions of the brain. 2) The elements Pb, Zn (in Kjeldahl decomposition) Si, Sn, Sr, Ag, Be, and Ti appear in the regions examined. Of these traces, Si appears most frequently. 3) These findings agree with these ofVoinar andRusanow, who, in 1949, independent of us, reported on the occurrence of previously biological unknown elements in the brain, such as Ag, Al, Bi, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Si, Zn, Ti, and V. 4) The determination of trace elements in the brain makes it likely that new neuro-biological viewpoints will arise. 5) At present, no definite conclusion can be reached as to whether these trace elements are functionally of specific significance for the central nervous system. After all, the existence of specialcells in certain regions of the brain indicates the possibility that specialelements may also play a role for certain functions.
Abstract:
