Abstract:
Thorium activity of atomic number 234 (UX 1 ,) can be separated by anion exchange method. UX 1 can be retained in the resin column of Amberlite IRA 400 in nitrate form when uranyl nitrate in 7.5 N nitric acid solution is allowed to pass through it. Uranyl ion absorbed is washed out of the resin column with the washing solution of nitric acid at the same concentration, while UX 1 retained in the column can be recovered simply by using water as an eluent, The experimental results obtained by using batch method as well as column method suggest that the concentration of acid should be kept above 7 N if the recovery of more than 85% of UX 1 in original uranyl nitrate solution is desired. Effects of the presence of anions other than nitrat ion in acid solution were studied by using batch method. The results indicate that, with the exception of phosphate and iodate, the anions under investigation did not produce any perceptible effect. The phosphate and iodate anions exhibited slightly less absorption in the resin phase. The anions studied include the phosphate, sulphate, bromate, iodate, chloride, bromide, iodide and oxalate○
