Summary 1. The endogenous diurnal petal movements ofKalanchoe blossfeldiana were recorded in continuous darkness. Transients were induced by single light signals. The several phases of these transients react upon a second light signal in the same manner as similar movement phases of the original rhythm. 2. It is concluded that the movement rhythm reflects exactly the behaviour of the underlying oscillator. There is no evidence that the transients are due to coupled oscillators. 3. Biological relaxation oscillations are known which originate from excitation processes of the all or none type. In plants the single periods of these oscillations require a few minutes. Every relaxation results in an absolute and a relative refractory period. According to the well known behaviour of these processes, single stimuli must induce transient-cycles with changes periods and amplitudes. 4. Experiments on the endogenous movements of leaflets inDesmodium gyrans offer examples. These relaxation oscillations inDesmodium show periods of about 3 min. Stimulation by light, heat or touching induces transients with changed amplitudes and decreased or increased periods. 5. It is concluded that the transient behaviour of biological rhythms can be explained on the basis of relaxation oscillations, and without the assumption of coupled oscillators.
Notes:
